[gulp] It may soon be time to say goodbye to SoupKitten

She has a fair amount of fluid on her abdomen - according to the vet there are a few possible causes and pretty much all of them are bad.

She was found in a gutter as a tiny kitten with cat flu, eye infections and mites which left her with a few problems but has spent nearly 5 happy years here with us and FatCat.

Waiting for the results of £250 worth of blood tests but have primed toe children that she is unlikely to be with us much longer.

PS - Is the vet going to drain some fluid off while she's there?

MissStrawberry · 03/06/2013 13:50

We recently lost our cat and I don't think our children ever believed that she would actually die as she had been ill without problems for several months. We had one false alarm where they said goodbye and she came home but when it was actually time they were told one afternoon and it happened two days later. I have found the children are devastated when first told, heart broken when it is about to happen but have coped really well since. Helped that we have two new rescue cats now.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 13:55

I forgot to ask about the fluid. I need to phone at 4 to see if she can come home.

I imagine that the children would be upset if she dies but get over it easily for the most part. She is not an in-your-face cat so largely goes unnoticed. It's the kind of thing they'll be upset about at the time and then whenever they are reminded she's not here. Who knows - DD has recently been sobbing about her great grandmother and she died 5 years ago when DD was 18 months old!

MissStrawberry · 03/06/2013 13:59

Maybe now she is older she is realising the finality of death?

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 14:12

I was more surprised that she remembered her GGmother at all to be honest, let alone enough to sob. Very strange. She was soon over it though :)

I think the children will be fine. I remember my family dog being PTS when I was 14 and it was traumatic for a few days and then dwindled to feeling a twinge whenever I saw a golden cocker spaniel.

MissStrawberry · 03/06/2013 19:45

Any news?

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 20:39

Down there at 12:59

Heart does not appear to be enlarged but her liver looked patchy in places so they are doing a liver function test whilst they have her.

So, more inconclusive tests! Now awaiting liver function tests. FFS.

cozietoesie · 03/06/2013 20:43

Aw heck - more waiting? Poor her and poor you.

I take it they deferred removing fluid until the tests are back?

MissStrawberry · 03/06/2013 20:49

Oh yes, I saw that. I meant since then.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 21:23

Oh, no further news, no.

I don't know why they haven't removed any fluid TBH. I guess it's because they want to know what's actually going on.

She was having some food when I went upstairs a minute ago. Yes, she is eating a small portion of Whiskas on my bed. All standards are gone!

OP posts:
MissStrawberry · 03/06/2013 21:30

Just as it should be Grin.

cozietoesie · 03/06/2013 21:43

Well I trust it's on a saucer on your bed and not straight from the coverlet!

Seriously. If she's feeling a bit wobbly on occasion, maybe allowing her to eat (and have her tray) in your bedroom where she feels safe could be a positive approach.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 22:03

And now the $¥€*^#% dog has escaped through the cat flap and is rampaging through the neighbours' gardens.

I don't need this.

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 03/06/2013 22:08

Get him in, chastise him, and have some Wine. I think you deserve it tonight.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 22:15

"Get him in"

Lololol. If only it were that easy. I am wandering about the streets with a slice of pizza and an empty dog lead

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 03/06/2013 22:18

Ah - he's in hot pursuit then. Sounds like a gin when you eventually get back and not a Wine.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 22:23

Spotted him disappearing through a hedge on the other side of the (quiet) road.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 22:40

Got him.

I don't like him very much!

OP posts:
ClaraOswald · 03/06/2013 22:41

He obviously feels you need more stress in your life.

cozietoesie · 03/06/2013 22:44

A quick verbal chastising and shut him in the kitchen or somewhere.

Then get yourself a BIG G&T.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 22:48

Perhaps the vet will take him as part. Payment Smile

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 22:52

The chastising goes something like this:

Me- BAD SoupDoggyDogg. BAD dog. BED.

SDD- I chased FatCat through the flap! I ran through LOTS of gardens! I ran through a POND! I chased FOXES! More gardens! FOXES!! PIZZA!! I do it AGAINGrin

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 03/06/2013 22:57

It's true - dogs do have a rather limited view of the great scheme of things.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2013 23:01

Now I just need to sort out the small ginger cat who appears to be taking up an entire king sized bed Hmm

OP posts:
ClaraOswald · 04/06/2013 08:37

So did you sleep on the sofa, after soupKitten hogged the bed?
