:(

he is 18.

He has started to leave nuggets of poo about the place. He did do this about 18 months ago but I changed their diet and it stopped. It's started again.

I did a 'big clean' yesterday and but the baby found one and put it in her mouth this morning. :(
This has been my worst fear about him :(

We had to take him to the vet yesterday as he has something wrong with his mouth.

Today I want to take him back there and not let him come back. In general he has stopped grooming himself, I have to brush him. Also he seems a bit vacant. I know I am reacting to the poo thing but it was IN HER MOUTH.

Sunflower seeds what a ridiculous post.

sancerreity · 06/08/2012 17:11

I don't think sunflower seeds is being ridiculous.
A cat doesn't look forward to the rest of it's life. Like seeing the grandkittens grow up , or going on holiday next year .its future is a blank with no hopes, dreams or expectations.

yellowraincoat · 06/08/2012 17:42

Well if cats don't have any concept of time, let's just get all of them put down. Dogs as well, and especially hamsters.

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 17:49

So what you're saying is just because something has no concept of time they don't deserve a life? Just because they don't forward think and have 'hopes and dreams'

Sorry to say it, but some people don't have these things either but we keep them alive. Why? Because they have a right to life and they are loved and every other thing that comes with being ALIVE.

GhostShip - Its a cat. A cat is not human and doesn't have human rights.

Get a sense of proportion, anyone would think we were talking about murdering a PERSON. A cat does not a have a right to life in the same way that a human being does.

Not everyone is dotty about animals. Personally I can't see the problem with putting an elderly cat to sleep because it has become incontinent. Having a cat that shits everywhere must be a nightmare.

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 18:16

I'm not 'dotty' about animals I just absolutely disagree with 'it doesn't have a concept of time doesn't have hopes and dreams therefore it doesn't matter if it dies'.

Some people care, some evidently do not. I'm glad I have compassion.

'having a cat that shits everywhere must be a nightmare' oh so thats a reason to put it down then? Don't get a fucking animal if you're not willing to take the bad with the good.

SchrodingersMew · 06/08/2012 18:25

ReallyTired What makes you think you have more of a "right" to live than any other animal?

I really hate it when people seem to think their life matters more than anothers.

SchrodingersMew · 06/08/2012 18:26

And just because you think of yourself as human does not mean you are not still an animal like every other creature.

Lucyellensmum99 · 06/08/2012 18:34

I think the question is whether or not the cat has quality of life. I think as pet owners, when we choose to take on an animal we must do what we can for that animal to make sure it has a good life, a happy and painfree life. I am torn on this one - as the ops motivation is not taken from the view point of doing what is best for the cat, but what is best for her, however, it could be that letting the poor bloody thing die with dignity, pain free and not dirty would be the kindest thing to do.

I used to be a vet nurse and have had to assist in the euthanasia of many an animal, it was always heartbreaking, mostly people had agonised, if i am honest though i would often have more of a problem with people who DIDN'T put their pets to sleep when really they had no more quality of life, i would question who they were doing it for. However, I will never forget the two lovely labardors that someone bought in to be put to sleep because they would snap at the grand children when they visisted - they wouldnt even consider rehoming or our suggestions that the dogs be put outside etc, was just awful :( Those two dogs came bounding in, tails a wagging and we had to put them to sleep. Angry

The key point is quality of life! Can a cat live happily with a few medical issues that flare up from time to time and receive treatment ? Yes they can! Can a cat (a clean agile and independent creature) live happily for years soiling itself constantly ? No! If it's short term and can be medically sorted then fine but a cat who can't control his bodily functions is going to be extremely distressed and if there's no medication no surgery that can help then poor thing is going to be miserable :(

lucy that's awful. Isn't there a law on such things? There should be. I would have had to take them.
