Abandoned kittens. What to do now

We found 2 kittens, not close to any houses, no mum around either. Managed to round them up and have them safe at home, but what do I do now?

Not sure how old they are but look far too young to be out (I will try and add a photo)

We have an older rescue cat (approx 16 years old.) How would we introduce them if we decide to keep them? Are kittens difficult to care for? They're so incredibly cute but we want to do the best thing for them.

Do you have a local animal hospital / rescue centre? They may have been reported missing there, I guess?

Kittens aren't difficult to care for, you have to take a softly, softly approach if you decide to keep / introduce them to the other cat.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Pinot knows all about kitties. If you are stuck, send her a message, she is always very helpful in these situations as she took some in which were found in her garden and hand reared them.

ifeelloved · 08/07/2012 21:19

Ok I've had a proper google and I think they're over 8 weeks as their eyes aren't blue but they're under 6 months as they still have baby teeth.

Our current cat is totally not impressed so not sure on whether we can keep them. Maybe I will pm Pinot.

Thanks so far, and any other advice gratefully accepted.

Anyone want 2 kittens? Only joking!

seriously get in touch with local rescues they will put kittens high priority if they are like the one i work at what ours does is e mails round for a foster family go onto catchat.org this site will bring up all the local ones to you, they sound about 6-8 weeks old if thier eyes are green but still got baby teeth , wheigh them under 10 weeks will be around 1kg or just under in wheight, if they are friendly it sounds like someone has dumped them and yes it does happen if they had been ferals and mom has vanished they would be hissy and spitty and scared of you

ifeelloved · 08/07/2012 22:14

Oh no they're not scared of us at all, they also knew what to do in the letter tray, though there have been a couple of accidents.

What food should I get for them?

Kitten food wet/biscuits. Maybe both as you don't know what they are used to.
If they have only just been separated from their mum they might find catmilk comforting. Although it doesn't have much nutritional value according to my vet, my 10 week old kitten loves a spot.

Good luck.

issey6cats · 08/07/2012 23:03

definitely dumped then yes wet food (not whiskas my feral foster kit turned her nose up) and kitten biscuits dont give then milk kitten or otherwise just plain water cats are lactose intolerant and it will give them the runs

Viewofthehills · 08/07/2012 23:20

Cat milk is lactose free and will not give cats the runs.
It is empty calories and shouldn't be overused, but there is no harm in it if it gives a kitten comfort because it is just weaned. That is what my vet said last Friday.

And actually, many cats are lactose intolerant, but far from all of them are.

ifeelloved · 09/07/2012 20:05

I will change to water, yes they have the runs.

Current cat really not keen. Hissing and spitting lots so don't think we can keep them. Absolutely gutted Sad

aww thats a shame maybe give it a little while longer it has taken 3 days for my bossy girl to accept the foster kitten i have this week as they are both girls or as i said get in touch with local rescues as they are the best placed to rehome, and the kittens will probably go from them neutered, chipped and possibly vaccinated depending on particular charity

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 09/07/2012 20:22

Pinot's using Pinot4Pattykins atm, she was around just now on the namechanges thread in Site Stuff.

sunflowerseeds · 09/07/2012 20:58

Keep them! Keep them!
Old cat is sure to be hissy and spitty, she will get used to them. Make sure she can get away from them. Baby teeth start getting lost at 4 months.

ifeelloved · 09/07/2012 21:28

Dh says no!

Giving them water was funny, they looked at it as if to say wtf this? Have tipped out half the water and topped it up with cat milk, they're happy now!

Thanks for all your advice

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/07/2012 17:19

Just say OMG I was busy and I didnt have time to take them....

Poor you I'd want to keep them too.

Elkieb · 10/07/2012 17:24

ifeelloved are you anywhere near Leicester? I want to rehome a kitten after my dear old girl had to be pts a little while ago.

ifeelloved · 10/07/2012 22:08

Fraid not, we're. In se London. Dh has said no (and I think he's right - damn him!).

Just heard back from the people who said they'd have them, they're not s sure now.

I suppose we could ask to foster them until they find an owner
