Oh god frontline has stopped working, what next?

I did see a thread ages ago about this, can't find it now.

I frontlined them all last week, just saw a flea on one of the cats.

Bloody hell frontline was perfect. Can anyone recommend anything?

haven't seen any hopping fleas in the house, do I need to worry? I don't have any carpets, do they live in floorboards?

I think one that is really good is advocate? but is prescription only.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 06/07/2012 23:55

Prescription only? Oh bloody hell. Grin

We buy advantage, just coming to end of first month,so far so good.I know the link is for dogs but they do it for cats as well if you search around that site.

cats

DiscoDaisy · 07/07/2012 00:00

The rescue place we got our new cat from uses Advocate.
According to most of the websites I've looked at on the internet you need a vet's prescription if you want to get it from anywhere but your vet's.
Frontline stopped working on our old cat after using it for over 12 years.
Our vet also recommended something that I think was called Stronghold but I might be wrong about the name.
I can get up and walk to the kitchen to check if you really would like me to! Grin

Thank 1sassy - bloody fleabag cats.

Oh god I am going to get confused with advocate and advantage.

Prescription only is a bit of a bugger.

advocate is fantastic

Alameda · 07/07/2012 00:04

I don't put anything on my cats at all, they have a program injection every six months which seems to do the trick - you could try that? it's a bit different, it stops them from laying eggs as the adult fleas are merely the tip of a very big iceberg lifecycle

the dog is a different story, program + frontline = STILL SOME FLEAS Angry

GetOrfMoiiLand · 07/07/2012 00:07

I had no idea re injection. I will give that advantage a go, and if that doesn't work take all 4 of them (CHRIST) to the vets.

Thank you all very much.

Bastard fleas. Where do they come from?

OP posts:
Alameda · 07/07/2012 00:09

I have four too, it is £ouch twice a year plus vacs - would probably not bother if dog wasn't allergic to fleas, would keep trying the sprays and spot ons

someone told me recently to use a different spot on or spray every year, that could make sense, but somehow I am finding it hard to move on from Frontline

Metabilis3 · 07/07/2012 00:12

The thing about programme is, it doesn't stop them getting fleas and bringing them in the house. The fleas can't breed, but they are still there. Frontline stopped working for us about a year and a half ago, after 4.5 years. We use advocate now and it works.

Alameda · 07/07/2012 00:17

I suppose that's why you are supposed to use both, but at least the fleas I do find are dopey and half dead

but don't want to see ANY

I HATE THEM

and dog has extreme phobia of frontline now, it takes three people and a lot of dental chews (is like cocaine to him) to get any on him

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2012 09:52

It cost me £8 for my prescription for advocate but it was half the price of the vets online and I got it throught quidco too.

Sparklingbrook · 07/07/2012 09:53

Another vote for Advocate here.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 07/07/2012 11:12

Well I have tried some advantage - ordered 4 vials for a tenner, which seems stupidly cheap. Will give that a go and see what happens, if not I will have to take them to the vets.

That's another thing - will I have to take all 4 cats at the same time to the vets? Or can I just call the vet and say my cats have fleas, can I have a prescription for advocate?

OP posts:
MissFoodie · 07/07/2012 11:13

have you been religiously doing it every month?
it only takes one missed month....
if you've seen a flea it was probably there before, I missed one month and was infested.......
had to spray house....
but frontline does work, as have religiously done it every month since and never seen another
also, are you using frontline normal or frontline combo? the latter is better but you have to get it from the vet or online with prescription

GetOrfMoiiLand · 07/07/2012 11:15

Frontline normal - and yes have done it every month without fail.

The house isn't affected and i have not seen a flea on me, just on the cats.

I am now converted to Seresto Collars you put them on and don't have to think about fleas or ticks for 8 months (it treats the household too). Price wise it beats every other product hands down.

MissFoodie · 07/07/2012 22:18

oooh that collar sounds good!!!!

ShowOfHands · 07/07/2012 22:24

MissFoodie, sadly fleas ARE becoming resistant to frontline. We had a nightmare last year. Fleas are hardy feckers.

ELR · 07/07/2012 22:43

Frontline stopped working for me too. I now use advocate I buy it from the vets but don't need a prescription I just ask the receptionist it's really good!

Becky2011 · 08/07/2012 15:40

Just had a conversation with vet nurse on this today. She suggested a new brand called Advocate, even if just used for 3 mths as fleas may be getting a resistance to frontline.

See my post on fleas in my carpet - I sympathise!
