straight to the vet with this?

Dcat had a wire put in his jaw a fortnight ago as he had a broken jaw. wire is to be removed 4 weeks from now. over the last couple of days he has seemed to be having trouble getting a hairball up which he never had trouble with before, then last night i noticed his breathing was quite loud (had been ok until last night) now this afternoon the breathing is still very loud and there is a whiny/wheezy sound coming when he breathes every breath. almost like very faint meow but definitely breathing. could thsi be releated to the wire/broken jaw? or something totally different? am thinking go straight to vet now?

I wouldn't go "now" if he's not gasping/quite wheezing. First thing tomorrow if he's no better. And keep him indoors in the warm tonite.

IAmBooyhoo · 02/05/2012 19:48

oh, i took him earlier as he started sounding raspy very suddenly and was crouching down vet thinks a chest infection so gave him an antibiotic and anti inflammatory. he stays inside anyway as he still isn't very mobile (cant jump or run) so wouldn't be able to get himself out of harm's way of even over the back fence TBH.

russ stopped breathing this eveing. completely collapsed, gasping for air, tongue turned blue and bubbles in his mouth. was almost gone by the time vet arrived at surgery jsut doing that silent gasp thing where his jaw was just moving but no sound. picked up slightly once on table, lifting head and trying to get away from vet. vet has him on an iv drip, gave him something to cler his lungs and i think something to infalte them. would that be right? he has to sedate him in teh morning for an xray. thinks he might have food lodged in his throat as a result of teh wire and not being able to chew properly. i was hysterical. he just collapsed under my bed, thank goodness i was in bed and not downstairs or somehwere else. longest drive of my life getting to the vets. had to get dcs out of bed. ds2 too young to know what was going on but ds1 in shock and was shaking. i've told him he's ok an that he woke up again but that vet is going to look after him tonight and give him medicine. i'm still shaking. please let him get through the night.

I think they have someone there. Not sure if it's a vet or night nurse staff...but the vet will be on call I amsure of that xx i am 100% they will do all they can for him.

Do you have a OOH number you can maybe call to check on him? xx

IAmBooyhoo · 03/05/2012 22:57

yes i have the OOH number. the surgery was all locked up and empty when i arrived. i had to wait for vet to come. he was only one there when i left. i will be down there 1st thing anyway as i have to take my kitten in to be speyed (was booked before today).

Oh ok I see what you mean...maybe someone a vet maybe? can come along and tell us if they have staff on during the night.
For an animal as sick as your cat...I would have thought/hope so. Confused

Try calm down IAm...I knoe easier said than done...but he sounds a strong boy...he got through the broken jaw...stay positive xx

hellymelly · 03/05/2012 23:02

Oh how terrible, I hope he is ok. My old vet didn't have anyone there at night, but larger places might do. I think it varies hugely. I don't know what our current one does actually. I would call and check, although if he is on a drip they will want him to stay where he is. Have they done anything to address the possible blockage ?

no he checked down his throat by looking and with his finger but couldn't see/feel anything. said he wont xray until tomorrow. he was definitely alot brighter by teh time i left so guessing/hoping that any blockage has moved? although that means it could moved back again Confused. vet said the breathing sounded liek it was coming from his throat and not his chest but whne he listened said his lungs were working very hard to breathe. im not sure what that means.

OP posts:
crazynanna · 03/05/2012 23:08

Maybe it is a chest infection and his lungs are a bit congested.

IAmBooyhoo · 03/05/2012 23:10

thank you korma. the vet took my mobile on teh xray consent form so i'm thinking will ring me if he gets worse/teh worst happens during the night? i can only imagine someone would have to be in teh surgery for something like a cat that stopped breathing? he honestly did it so quickly. one minute he was sitting on teh floor, wheezy but no more than he has been teh last 24 hours, the next minute he went under my bed and i heard the thud. i checked and he was falt on his side gasping, his eyes all glazed over.

OP posts:
hellymelly · 03/05/2012 23:33

Can you call them to find out how he is getting on, or did they say not to call until the morning?

crazynanna · 03/05/2012 23:34

Smile the wonder of tea!

Don't watch bbtheory....am throwing slippers and soft toys at IDS on the screen on QT Hmm

IAmBooyhoo · 03/05/2012 23:40

they didn't say anything about calling. when i called the first time it wasn't teh vet that answered it was the vet nurse (she must be on phone duty tonight) but she's not in teh surgery i think they have the calls forwarded as teh OOH number is teh same as the usual daytime surgery number. i dont want to ring her if it's not an actual emergency if that makes sense. especially if she's sleeping and has family.

what is IDS?

crazynanna · 03/05/2012 23:41

Ian Duncan Smith

IAmBooyhoo · 03/05/2012 23:47
