Our Cat is missing :-(

Last year, a few days before Christmas, our lovely one year old cat was hit and killed by a car, we were all distraught. Christmas Eve my DH arrived home with the most adorable kitten who it turned out had not been properly weaned and we stayed up round the clock encouraging her to feed/drink, it worked and she grew into a gorgeous cat, she is just 14months old.

She's been missing since yesterday morning, she NEVER stays out, there's no sign of her, I feel sick. The bin men came yesterday afternoon and took away all the Christmas recycling waste, I called them to see if perhaps she was in box or something and got chucked in, they said they thought not but if she has she wouldn't look like a cat any more anyway.

Please give me some positive outcomes to similar stories..

She's very timid and also very unusual colour so now I'm worried she has been stolen or hit by a car.

I've printed up leaflets and will take them round tomorrow (was at work all day), have checked with immediate neighbours/the garage/shed etc..

One of my cats disappeared for a whole week. Just vanished. Then one day he came strolling back in the house looking none the worse for wear.
I later found out that he had been holed up in a house a couple of streets away who had convinced themselves that he was a stray (his collar had come off, and they didn't bother to see if he was chipped Hmm - he was) and were cosseting him with roast chicken dinners and tuna....no wonder he'd not been home! Grin

Just recounting this tale to show that cats often do go off for days on end and then come home again. I hope yours is home soon.

Sending positive vibes to LisaD1

Stay strong...she'll be home x

LisaD1 · 31/12/2011 12:07

Thank you so much for your replies.

Still no sign of her, we have been out searching her favourite wooded area behind where we live and have done door to door enquiries and put signs up.

Am now more concerned as came across another couple doing the same thing, their cat has also gone missing on the same day and they are very similar :-(

So sorry LisaD1. Has she turned up yet? This website has a lot of helpful advice if your cat goes missing - www.catchat.org/lost.html.

When my cat went missing the best response I got was from posters. I also leafleted my entire estate which got me a few calls too. Also if your town has a facebook page put a pic of your cat on there. On my towns facebook page missing/found cats always generate a lot of responses.

I know how heartbreaking it is, I really hope that you find her x

LisaD1 · 31/12/2011 19:37

Thanks so much Thistlewhistle, that link is really useful.

She still hasn't arrived home but we are certainly not giving up hope, she is microchipped so I hope that will help to get us reunited.

I'm going back out to the wooded area near us again in a bit and see if I can see/hear her in there without my 4year old being a pain helping! x

Our neighbours cat has just returned home from a few days missing.

It seems he moved in with a family a 10 min walk away. Eventually this family managed to find out through friends of friends of friends (IYSWIM) where he was missing from and reunited him with his fraught owners.

Chances are your cat has done the same. There are more people spending time at home than usual at this time of year so there are plenty of warm homes, with leftover turkey and welcoming occupants to take them in.

She's probably working her way round the street!

Wolfiefan · 31/12/2011 19:53

Have any neighbours gone away? Could she have crept in a house, shed or garage and been locked in? Hope you find her safe and well.

LisaD1 · 31/12/2011 20:05

She could well be doing that, she is a VERY pretty girl, everyone who sees her falls in love with her. She is quite timid though and I don't think she would just go off with someone. We have a few neighbours that seem to be away, am hoping the new year brings them and our lovely cat home.

It just feels very raw having lost our 1year old cat at this time last year to the road. Although we went for a girl cat this time and she has never roamed far from home, was always loitering if we called her.

Thanks for the replies and good wishes, it really does help.

Any news LisaD1? Smile

LisaD1 · 01/01/2012 17:52

Thanks for asking.

We had a call about an hour ago saying someone had found a cat they thought was ours, same collar and found couple streets away. DH and DD1 dashed over and it sadly isn't, it's very similar but is black, our girl is dark grey but the posters i put up were black and white.

My heart is racing, the waiting game is horrible.

Fingers crossed here for you. A friends cat disappeared at the beginning on December, we were all out searching, posters up etc. Nothing.

A week later he strolls in, heads into sitting room and curls up on friends lap!!

Hoping for a very similar outcome for you.

LovingChristmas · 01/01/2012 17:57

Ring all the vets in the area, ring the council and ask if they have picked up any dead cats from the area (horrible I know but at least you'd have an answer), all shelters in a good area around and door knock the whole village, and get them to open sheds/garages whilst you are there.

Good luck

LisaD1 · 01/01/2012 18:36

Thanks everyone, I wll ring the council again on Tuesday, I did call last week as she went missing the day they came for recycling but I only called the recycling centre to see if they found her, will make the other enquiry, I really hope she hasn't been hit by a car but I would rather know than not.

Thanks

Hoping for good news tomorrow. Is she chipped? My vet scanned chip to confirm cat hit by a car was ours! They do scan any strays or injured they find? Could you leaflet neighbours and ask them to check and spread the word?

sashh · 03/01/2012 05:34

Check the vets.

A neighbour handed me a stray in October. First trip was to the vet - no microchip - but they took a description and we used them as a contact rather than my own number.

We knocked on doors and found out she had been fed, along with a number of strays, on a street nearby but could not find an owner.

She is now a permenant resident.

Has she been spayed? An unspayed cat can be very affectionate and follow any male (cat, dog human) home.

Check your local RSPCA and Cats' Protection - they have lists of lost and founds.

One positive story - many years ago I had a cat go missing for two weeks and then suddenly turn up home - it does happen.

Also I feed a couple of strays, both males, who turn up for food on a regular basis - they have not been for a couple of weeks even though new arrival was on heat (now been done) so I think they have found somewhere warm with better food - I only give them dried cat food.

Wolfiefan · 03/01/2012 19:50

Any news?

LisaD1 · 03/01/2012 21:55

Still nothing good to report, have called vets/microchip company and council.

We had awful storm here today, I just hope she is somewhere warm and safe.

oh no, what a worry. To try and keeo you upbeat there are often threads just like yours on here, which more often than not result in a cat sauntering through the door without a care in the world after days of panic.

Keeping everything crossed you have a similar result.

Maisie55 · 04/01/2012 20:38

Lisa, I am going through the exact same thing, our lovely cat disappeared 6 days ago and I'm going out of my mind with worry about him. Fingers crossed you get some news soon.

Millicano · 04/01/2012 21:34

oh not another one. Hopefully there will be two sets of good news very soon.

Millicano · 07/01/2012 14:39

any news from either of you? Hoping you are too busy to post an update

LisaD1 · 07/01/2012 17:11

Sorry to hear you're going through the same thing Maisie55, it's so horrible not knowing where/how they are.

Still no news here, I have been in touch with all the vets in a 5 mile radius, have leafleted all neighbours/local schools/even the pub! Nothing, she just seems to have vanished into thin air :-(

LovingChristmas · 07/01/2012 17:21

OK, have you rang all the rescues further afield as well, google them, even the small ones might be able to help. Put an ad on the internet, nosy on the internet anyway, when we found a stray I posted her on there, I had people from Scotland (live in the Midlands) asking to check if it was their cat, so people do use them, post on Gumtree in your area with a picture, FB is another good source of posting and sharing, also local papers will generally carry your ad for free as well, so go for the free papers and the local weeklys etc
Good Luck

LisaD1 · 07/01/2012 17:54

Thank you LovingChristmas, I have called loads of rescues, RSPCA, Cats Protection, another local one that they gave me details for, I have an ad on the local gumtree and on mine and my friends FB pages, I have registered with Mymoggy.com who offer a nationwide service, have spoken to the postman, the milkman, feels like I have spoken to the world and his wife lately.

Am hoping that someone calls us with good news soon
