Offered a lilac point boy- Is It too soon?

I posted a couple of weeks ago about our heartbreak ad a family after losing our beloved little black cat. It's only been a few days since we heard the bad news from the vet.

We have been offered the chance to go and see a 6 month old lilac point Siamese boy tomorrow. His litter mates all found homes but he got left behind and is being offered as an adult to a kind home for the cost if his vaccinations. I'm a bit torn as it seems heartlessly soon to think of a new kitten but on the other hand the DCs are excited and thinking of having a kitten in the house has put a smile back on their faces.

aaaaaaaaaah how lovely

have you had a siamese before? they are not really like normal cats Smile

mycatsaysach · 03/12/2011 17:57

to answer your question - i don't think its ever too soon

LackaDAISYcal · 03/12/2011 18:04

As someone who got our current cat 2 days after losing our 17 year old lady, I'm on the side of "never too soon"
The only qualms I would have is him being Siamese as they aren't the easiest of breeds AFAIK and are more one person cats than family cats and can get quite stressed about life.
I would love a Siamese though and wouldn't be able to resist the bargain!

Sparklingbaubles · 03/12/2011 18:11

I swore when we lost our little black one year old I wouldn't have another as I couldn't do the heartbreak. I lasted two whole weeks.

I went to see one with carrier in the boot just in case. We have had her for 2 years in February. Grin

KatyMac · 03/12/2011 18:16

I love Siamese (I'm on my 4th) but they aren't really cats, they are more people

I'd never have a moggy post siamese

Sparklingbaubles · 03/12/2011 18:19

Just googled some pictures of the breed. Think you need to take the cat carrier just in case!

peggotty · 03/12/2011 18:22

I'd be asking why he got left behind tbh. Sorry to sound heartless but is there a problem with the kitten perhaps? If you do decide to take him, get him insured ASAP.

Bunbaker · 03/12/2011 18:22

It's never too soon. I grew up with Siamese cats - we had a seal point, and my auntie had a blue point. I love them.

redpanda13 · 03/12/2011 18:25

I do not think it can ever be too soon. Your DC are ready for a new cat which is the most important thing.
I have a Siamese X and a Choc Point Siamese and they are great cats. The X is the most laid back, child loving cat you could get. Even my non cat loving mother thinks he should be cloned. He has never shown any aggression, not so much as a hiss ever.
The choc point is a different guy altogether. He is a total clown and is in at everything. I got him for my DD when she was 3 years old and he was a great choice. He thrives on attention and has worked out how to turn off the phone when I am on it! He is very food orientated and will have a go at anything. Great for galvanising me to clear the dinner plates though.
Only downside both have pica - sponges and plastic carrier bags a favourite. I keep everything hidden. Oh and they keep their tails up so sometimes a smelly cat bum to the face. Yuck

AmberLeaf · 03/12/2011 18:34

Not too soon.

Yes, Ive found this an issue, one of ours ate shoe laces so we had to put shoes in a locked cupboard! she chewed jumpers a lot too.

Siamese are lovely, my family have always had them [as well as moggies]

Definitely different to moggies, they are cats...but with a bit of dog thrown in too! 2 of ours would fetch and bring back what you threw just like a dog would.

My dads current siamese is an awful thief, she brings home toys and food that she nicks from peoples houses!

All that aside, they are a lovely breed and lilacs are so pretty.

Go for it.

KatyMac · 03/12/2011 18:37

I'll have him if you don't want him

Considers presumed cross country cat transport plus introducing kitten to existing psychotic 6yr old oriental

mycatsaysach · 03/12/2011 20:09

peggoty we didn't take our kitten till he was 4 months - iirc that's the best age for this breed.siamese kittens are usually v expensive so prob why this one has been left behind.

SeaweedNK · 03/12/2011 22:07

Thanks for all the advice. Sorry I haven't been back on until now. Have just got home from DDs carol concert so feeling all festive.

We have been owned by siamese before. In fact I had a lilac point when I was about DDs age and I loved him dearly. The DCs know all about him as I tell then stories about his escapades. DH and I had Tonkinese cats just after we got married and my tabby tonk boy died about 18 months ago. The two little black cats we just lost were from a Siamese mum and were very mesey in termperament so we are quite well trained to pander to siamese.

We are going to see lilac boy tomorrow at 2pm and will be taking our cat basket just in case...

You're going to see him? Congratulations on your new arrival

mycatsaysach · 03/12/2011 22:17

good luck and don't forget to post a pic Smile

chocolateyclur · 03/12/2011 23:05

Never too soon. And never too soon for a Siamese. even though mine is currently set in barmy mode

Sparklingbaubles · 04/12/2011 16:10

Did you go Seaweed?

SeaweedNK · 04/12/2011 16:22

We've got him!! On the way home at the moment. He's very timid and shy but snuggled up in DDs arms happily when we were there.

Wil try and take some pics when we get home Grin

As I said
"Congratulations on your new arrival"

I can't wait for photos

Sparklingbaubles · 04/12/2011 16:27

Yay-did you take the carrier just in case? Grin

I am so pleased for you Seaweed.

SeaweedNK · 04/12/2011 21:53

He's very nervous. DH and I have been taking it in turns to lie on the floor and stroke him as he hides in the bottom section of a two level wicker cat basket.

We have been rewarded though as we have had a lovely putty cuddle, a long 'chat' with him in his little Siamese kitten voice and he has just this minute ventured out for a good feed.

I have uploaded a couple of pics but he is a bit flighty and hard to catch on camera just now.

We are trying out names for him. Current favourite is Linus. He is lovely and DD is besotted already GrinGrin
