Not softie, considered. Prioritising energy for what is important. I've not walked today, just studied and ferried kids to and fro. Weekend beckons though Smile

Bproud well done for getting out there after work! When is C2C? Nothing soft about it! 15 miles a day for 2 weeks is some serious walking! You're entitled to a little luxury on the way!

Letsgo Have you got anywhere planned for walking this weekend?

We are off out tomorrow to near Hebden Bridge. Me, DH and DD (8) she is so excited! I have got a little hydration backpack and she is going to carry that. Grin Only aiming for 5 miles tomorrow with her but it's a walk all the same.
I only managed to do 3 miles today. I like to do my walking first thing in the morning after doing the school run but I had an appointment at 10 and wasn't finished with that till 12.30 so did an hours walk and had to get on with everything else then. I was itching to get out!
I know I'm new to this so it's probably that but does anyone else get all excited about walking/hiking?

I don't have much time or opportunity to do a lot of walking at the mo, but I pore over my country walking mag when it lands. Lovely pictures and some good writing. Will maybe get up the little local hills with my big girls on Sunday. Weather looks a bit grim though! Cold, windy, sleet....!

Ooh I like this thread! I always hiked as a child with family and then with hubby before DD. We the started hiking with DD when she was about 4. She is 13 now but we have a new (ish) addition who's 4 and not at all outdoorsy. I really want to encourage him to hike but don't know where to start! I still do around 30-50 miles per week alone while the DCs are at school but I really want to start doing it as a family again!
I am in training for L2B 100km walk so I have a good excuse to get out!

Hello all....happy walking....we are off to 'Manifold Valley' tmrw....all the talk of new boots has made me question whether my old Salomans are just a tad heavy now Grin.

Maybe I need to treat myself....

Went for a short one locally, perfect weather despite the looming clouds. Just lovely dark skies over the city and yet walking in the sun. It makes all the colours so vivid when it's like that. Hope you've all had good days and not got caught in the mega showers that we've had!

Wow Habdab 30-50 miles a week!! How many hours do you get out for while they are at school? 100km is seriously hardcore! How long will you do that over?

Scoop I think you deserve it! Grin

Letsgo well done on getting out today! We went for walk to Hebden Bridge today - Hardcastle Crag. DH and DD (we went and got her kitted out with some Craghoppers and boots) and got pelted with hailstones numerous times but it was great! According to Mapmywalk we did 6 miles in all (ok we stopped for coffee and cake in the middle but we needed sustenance!!) DD loved it but was getting tired towards the end.

DD looked ace, a real little hiker! Grin At one point when it was hailing (and she'd fallen over in the mud!) we sat under a massive rock and i cleaned up her hands and gave her some hand warmers (DH had scoffed at me with my first aid kit/hand warmers etc) and gave her some kendal mint cake and she was happy as Larry. She said that was her favourite bit (was prob the mint cake to be fair!)
Cake definitely makes all the difference!
Hopefully the worst of the weather happened today so you'll get a nice clear day tomorrow! Hope you have a great time, can't wait to hear all about it!

Habdab that is an amazing amount of miles per week, I am struggling to get 20 per week in. I am trying to do the Country walking mag challenge of 1000 miles in a year, but am way behind at the moment. I was staying with friends this weekend, but we did 2 5ish mile walks with their dogs, which was great fun.

Sir Raymond - I can get about 6.5 hours in during school but can only really do that once or twice a week at the most. I go fast and try to do 20-26 miles in during the 6.5 hours.
The 100 km charity walk should take around 24 hours. Yikes!!

Bproud you might be struggling to do 20 miles a week but 20 miles is great going! How many have you done out of your 1000 miles so far?

Habdab wow that's ace! How long have you been walking/hiking to get to that level of fitness? 24 hours of solid walking - you'll sleep well after that!! (for several days) Grin

Scoop Woohoo! Well done on getting out, it was a gorgeous day today. So much nicer when you get some distance between you and other hikers and the countryside is your own. I think I will have to make a note of that coffee walnut cake at Ilam and check it out soon!

Hi SirRay I have done 150 miles so far this year. I stayed at the YHA at Ilam last year, it was super. I have booked Sowe on the Wold YHA for a few nights in May to do some of the Cotswold way, has anyone done that walk?

Hi only1. The terrain is mostly flat at the moment but tomorrow I start my hill training. The charity walk is multi terrain and finishes over the South Downs so I am going to need to get used to hills! I think the mileage will reduce when the hills come in....I will let you know!
SirRay - I've always enjoyed walking but have been increasing my speed and distance over about 12 weeks so far.
It's lovely to hear how many other people enjoy getting out walking/hiking. Whether it's 1 mile or 50 miles it is still brilliant to be out there

150 miles so far is fantastic Bproud! You must have legs of steel!

Habdab Hopefully the weather will stay good for your hill training tomorrow. Do you use an app at all to measure your speed and distance? I'm using MapMyWalk. Well done on getting your DC to do 3.5 miles!! It's great isn't it when the DC enjoy it. My DD loved it on Saturday.

Where has everyone gone?!

I went out again this morning, 5.5 miles. Tried a different route today and really enjoyed it. I think I definitely need to get a different jacket as mine gets soaking inside when I warm up (it's not sweat -urgh - it's like condensation)
No DC this weekend so will be planning a trek out just DH and I.
Not sure where yet.

Letsgoforawalk · 26/03/2014 20:11

DOH, just typed a post but lost it.
Summary Sir ray yes it is condensation, something isn't breathing. I don't like zipped in jackets find separate (thin) fleece better. What do others think?
Not been out much but optimistic that Mother's Day will mean I get to choose the family activity (walk!)
Re YHA they are great, they have bars now lots of them. How convenient is that!?

Letsgo I initially bought a very cheapy jacket but I didn't mind because I hadn't really got going at that point. I bought another today that specifically said how breathable it was Grin and will layer it with a fleece. It was my Mothers Day present!
Where are you thinking of going this weekend then?
So this weekend we are doing this:
lovely walk
DH found it.
I can't wait!!!
Can I ask, what does everyone pack in their rucksacks when they go out for a days hike?

That Yorkshire walk looks lovely.
I find most coats cause a condensation problem, so only wear a raincoat when absolutely necessary. I layer up instead, with breathable vest, merino base layer and if necessary a windproof breathable top as well. As long as I wear a hat and gloves I find this combo sufficiently warm all through the winter. I have a very lightweight waterproof jacket from a cycling supplier called Wiggle for rainy days, but I do use waterproof trousers more often, for warmth and to walk through wet grass etc. I guess my legs don't sweat Grin
Off to Derbyshire this weekend, planning to walk Wolfscote Dale.
