We put our old rescue dog down. She had never been clean in the house but we dealt with it for 8 years because we loved her and no one else would have taken her on, we just washed her, bedding and floor pretty much every day. To be honest it was a relief to put her down at 13 years old.
we then got a puppy from a rescue centre. He was quite delayed as he was the runt. He is now nearly 4 and is developing incontinence. He was never consistently clean, he does a poo or two sometimes pee in the night. Often poos in his bed and sleeps on it. This is now becoming every night. He is in the utility room at night with puppy pads. This morning I had to wash him, the bed, the floor the bath as he was so covered. I have two disabled children who have lots of appointments. The toddler is non verbal and has very poor mobility. She is heavy and I have to basically change, feed and bottle her a lot day and night. I am a carer for both kids and it can be full on. My eldest struggles to attend school full time and I am trying to get toddler into a suitable nursery.
the dog is causing me so much cleaning every morning and so much extra work and cost. He is not great with the vet anymore as he has already had so much treatment for a broken leg and for his allergies which are now under control. I have taken him to the vet about this issue.
the vet said she can see his spine is not great which is common with this breed. Inability to housetrain is also common with him (frenchie).
I have just spent 270 on more wipes and puppy pads, a new bed as washing it every day has made it disintegrate. More dog shampoo and more medication. He is also on special food and a hefty insurance bill so he is very expensive but that is not the main issues the issue is that my utility room and kitchen are a dog kennel and I have a stressful life anyway with the kids.
I honestly feel at the end of my tether today as it is now every day. Before the kids eat the dog has to be sorted and the washing machine is on every day for the dog.
I think the accumulation is making me crack up.
I feel like I have no patience left and no one is getting any attention because I am so pissed off at another huge poonami every morning.
if he just did it on the sea of pads that would be a godsend but he does it on himself, the bedding as well.
I feel like the kids and me come second best.
we all love the dog putting him down is the last thing I want to do.
I intend to call the vet again and discuss it with her.
I really need some advice and perspective. He is not good with people or other animals. When we go on holiday I have to pay extra to the dog sitter as she has to do all this as well.
please can I have some advice I can’t see the wood for the trees.

Jesus Christ. MN really hate dogs don’t they.

It’s not normal for a dog to be shitting itself. Why on earth did you get another one- you have so much going on, does he get walked?

Take him to the vet. It’s not normal.

Completely agree. OP getting a rescue puppy in her circumstances is abolutely ludicrous but putting the poor thing to sleep shouldn't be the go-to solution FFS!

lenalemonade · 10/12/2022 19:21

Poor little dog .You have done your best OP ,gone above and beyond in fact ❤️
Surely it can't be good for the wee soul ,waking up covered in poo every day .
You have to be strong and do the kindest thing for the dog and the best thing for your family .
It's heartbreaking but your children must come first

Thanks for the nice replies, as for the shitty ones good grief rtft in the nicest possible way. My previous sick dog was put to sleep before my eldest became disabled. When we got the puppy he was fine until he was two years old and we then had another child who happened to be disabled. We did not get sick dogs with disabled children. We didn’t put him down because we couldn’t cope with him we put him down because he was in inoperable pain and had other health issues which impeded any treatment he might have.
loosen the judgy pants your nether regions need circulation…..

So sorry to hear your sad news OP, well done you for pushing for a proper diagnosis and getting to the bottom of the issue, and ultimately for making the tough but right decision for your dog. It's crazy that people continue to breed and buy these puppies.

You did the kindest thing op. A life of pain and double incontinence is not a good quality of life.

Cocolapew · 10/12/2022 20:12

You did the best thing for the poor dog 💐

Orangesare · 10/12/2022 20:18

You did the right thing. It’s always upsetting for us humans but it’s no way for the dog to live if we let it carry on.

“The vet was unable to prescribe strong painkillers because he also has colitis”

I’m not saying you did the wrong thing - because back pain is very difficult to manage and yes, it definitely can affect behaviour.

But, if you have other pets or ever get more... please use a different vet.

You shouldn’t use NSAIDS like metacam with colitis, but the stronger painkillers, you can.

Newpeep · 11/12/2022 08:37

Sorry to hear that but it sounds like it was the best thing for him. Dogs hide massive pain well. They tend to be in agony before they react.

the blame lies at the door of the breeders and those who buy these unhealthy dogs the first time round. Not adopters or those trying their best like it sound you were.
