What did you do with your dog's ashes?

My lovely girl died a couple of months ago. I have her ashes in the little box that the crematorium returned them in. I was intending to purchase a nice urn for them. However, I haven't been able to bring myself to choose one yet.

Im now wondering if putting them on display is just going to prolong the grief and upset me more. I lost my childhood dog many years ago and we scattered her ashes.

Popped some in a plant pot with a favourite houseplant, and that plant is now called by her name, and scattered the rest at her favourite (and coincidentally her last) walking spot.

took a while to do it though, as our eldest daughter struggled with the idea

MotherofPufflings · 13/08/2026 18:44

With our first dog we scattered them in a ditch that he loved to dive into and get muddy.

With our second, they are still at the vet because 2 months on I am still nowhere near ready to even look at the box 💔 One day we will scatter them at the top of the hill which was his favourite walk.

ThreeB · 13/08/2026 18:45

I had some put in a key ring and we put others in the garden and planted a cherry tree on top.

Turnedtochaos · 13/08/2026 18:47

Ours sat in the conservatory for years until one day I couldn’t look at them any more and I buried them in the garden! He loved it out there so I hope he would have approved.

bengalcat · 13/08/2026 18:48

They’re still in the box and her leads still hang on the door - not very inventive - doggy died at almost 16 15 months ago - sorry for your loss and hope you have many happy memories like me

PashaMinaMio · 13/08/2026 18:48

My little dog is in a small pretty wooden box with her name on a brass plate.
She sits in my glass cabinet with, as it happens, small porcelain models of her breed. These were collected during her life time.
My family know that she’s to “ go in my box with me.”
I haven’t been able to have another dog since she died. Losing them is too traumatic. 🥲

Iheartmysmart · 13/08/2026 18:51

Sorry for your loss 💐

My old fella’s ashes are in a lovely box on the sideboard next to my chair. He’s been gone almost three years now and I still say good morning and good night to him. It took me a year to pick up and put away his favourite toy from where he left it.

MamaBobo · 13/08/2026 18:51

They came back in a lovely cardboard cylinder, decorated with a bluebell wood. We couldn’t decide on one place that was his favourite so we took it to the points furthest North, South, East and West of what we considered our home range as a family and scattered a bit in each of his favourite spots. We took wine with us and drank a toast to him when we scattered the last bit. I couldn’t bring myself to throw the cylinder away so it’s still here. I was clearing stuff out the other day and came across it, there’s still a wee bit of ash inside, so a tiny bit of him has been here all along.

Northerndoglover · 13/08/2026 18:52

We lost our WCS almost 4 months ago and because we were adamant we were going to scatter her, we got the temporary tube containing her ashes. We are still paralysed with grief and carry her collar around with us all the time and therefore cannot bear to make a decision.

I think we will get a lovely ceramic urn in time and scatter the rest in the river she adored.

It takes time xx

Littlebitpsycho · 13/08/2026 18:55

My boy is on top of the unit in my living room. His favourite place was wherever me and DD were, so here at home is where he'll stay

HappiestSleeping · 13/08/2026 18:55

I have my first dog still in the box with the name plate. He died over 25 years ago. Most recent dog is scattered with my wife as he was really her dog.

Marmite27 · 13/08/2026 18:58

My dogs are on the top of the book case at my mums. Sounds callous, but it was his favourite place to lie and get in the way watch the comings and goings.

I’ll work it out when they move or die Wink

I'm sorry for your loss. I said that I would never have another for the same reason. Many years later I got a puppy and a few years after that rescued another girl. It was my 18 year old rescue girl that died. She had terrible separation anxiety for most of her time with me and wouldn't let me out of her sight. This is the reason I thought I would keep her ashes with me.

My other girl has kept me going. She's getting old herself but fortunately seems to be in good health.

My previous two are in nice wooden boxes under my desk. The second one was so loved by our vet that he paid for the beautiful pale oak box his ashes are in.

I'm sorry for your loss. I chose the bluebell cardboard box. That sounds like a wonderful send off. I think scattering ashes may give some sort of closure.

Thank you. That a lovely idea for me to consider. Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry. I am feeling the same way. I chose the cardboard box as I wanted to take my time before choosing an urn. I thought I would have done so by now but haven't felt able to.

Our dog passed away on Nov 3 2024 , I collected his ashes from the crem we use on Tuesday 5th and he’s lived on the chest of drawers in our bedroom since , next to two photos of him . He was the dog love of my life . My husband has a small shrine to him in the garage with a large canvas print and all his collars / harnesses / favourite toys / tennis balls etc and in the garden he has a memorial stone engraved and lit by solar lights . Sorry for your loss 💐

My dog's ashes are in a lovely urn which is on display along with her paw prints and photos and a candle. It all brings me comfort so it will stay until it doesn't anymore.

bugalugs45 · 13/08/2026 19:21

I scattered some at our favourite park , but I still have some in cupboard 5 years later , i don’t know what to do ,
I did contemplate jewellery , a friend of mine wears a pendant that contains some of her boys ashes

DorsetMermaid · 13/08/2026 19:22

I'm so sorry for your loss @PawsForTea.
We scattered our girl's ashes in one of her favourite spots on her favourite walk. She loved it there so much that even if we just passed the spot whilst out driving in the car she would stand up and enjoy the view through the window.
We walk there often to see her and on the first occasion we stopped to say hello a butterfly landed on my dress. Surely only a coincidence, but it meant the world to me.

Edited to say - I love to think of her there running free forever.

I'm sorry for all your loss. My first dog is scattered near my late Dad.
