What annoying habits has your dog learned to get attention?

Mine has learned that if he asks to be let out for the toilet, even though he can open the door himself, someone will get up and let him out, and he can use your attention as an opportunity to ask for treats/an extra walk/a second dinner/playtime. If he asks for these things when you're busy, and it's not playtime/walk time, or dinner time, he will be sent to bed, so he doesn't ask for any of these things anymore; he asks for the toilet instead.

He is now asking to be out every 2.3 seconds. All day long. Every day. And I can't tell when he genuinely needs the loo or when he's going to make a detour to his food bowl/the treat drawer en route to the garden.

Come and tell me your dog's annoying habits to distract me from locking mine in the garden for the rest of the day.

In our old house, if mine wanted something he would knock the shoes off the shoe rack with his paws to get attention

Lomonald · 05/07/2026 14:17

Tap on the door to be let out for a pee then outrun me to sit in my seat ! my dog is 4 we have been doing this almost 4 years 😂

nightowlzzz · 05/07/2026 14:18

We have a food tin we keep on the kitchen floor - when he’s hungry he either kicks the tin or drags his bowl around on the tiles and makes a racket,

he has a water bowl upstairs in our bedroom and he used to stand at the top of the stairs with the bowl in his mouth and throw the bowl down the stairs 😖🤣 thankfully we have now discovered non-tip bowls that he can’t pick up!

HA 😂

One of mine will steal a book from one of the bookcases and theatrically chew it if he wants attention, lol.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/07/2026 14:22

One stares at me intensely, deep into my soul about 6 inches from my face.

The second goes about 6 feet away and starts being a barky twat. Basically wanting you to go over and pick him up.

dogs are fucking weird and absolutely amazing

InTheVanguard · 05/07/2026 14:23

Mine will grab a soft toy or similar that is not hers, and runs downstairs, as she knows I’ll have to stop work and go and retrieve it from her. I know exactly what she’s doing as even her run is very “look at me!”.

HobnobsChoice · 05/07/2026 14:26

Mine will stand next to his bed that he is perfectly capable of moving himself and bark until a human moves it. Then once you place it down he will bark again until it's just in the right position.
Cute the first time, less so when you're trying to watch TV and he's being a nob head

Kalimeras · 05/07/2026 14:29

Mine will stare intently at his food ow water bowl or whatever will do as a stand in - reach his paw out and scrape at it. Sometimes he’ll flip the bowl over. It’s then up to you to guess what he wants. It’s very rarely the garden or a cuddle because he’s not a cuddly dog. He usually does it in the evening when you’re trying to watch telly

Megsdaughter · 05/07/2026 14:36

Ours used to stand in the living room doorway stock still at 9 oclock because she wanted to go to bed.
The door was open, we live in a bungalow the hall light was on, the bedroom door eas open.
No she wanted you to go with her. If we didnt she would stand there till you did.
Once she was in our bed and tucked up she was quite happy for you to go back and watch TV till about 10.30 then she would come stare at you till you relented and went to bed as well.

Ilovecheeseyah · 05/07/2026 14:40

Knock the mobile phone of of my hand when needing attending

bangs the wardrobe doors when she wants to wake me up and get out of the bedroom

give me a high five paw when she doesn’t want to do something

hide under the table when she doesn’t want a walk

Shrinkhole · 05/07/2026 16:06

Mine knows the cupboard that the treats are kept in and he will sort of ‘lure’ you over there eg pick up a toy and play tug for a bit and then lo and behold somehow end up by the cupboard. Once you are there he stares at the cupboard and then back to you, barks and bounces up and down sort of ‘pointing’ at it with his head. It looks like he’s having a seizure if you didn’t know what it was!

MissyB1 · 05/07/2026 16:31

Wants a treat every time we see a person on a walk. It’s because we used to distract her from bothering people by giving her a treat, now she thinks it’s the law that she has a treat when she sees anyone walk past, she freezes and refuses to move until we give it. No use trying to say no, we would literally be stuck in that spot all day!!

Pancakesandcream33 · 05/07/2026 16:37

Mine will ask to go out to the garden and repeatedly paw at the door while refusing to come in without a treat being put down. This can go on for 30-60 minutes and is a complete battle of wills. Yes I could give in and give her a treat for instant compliance but then she goes out several times a night - for a treat (and she's a little chubby)

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 05/07/2026 17:03

Mine does this nudge thing with his nose, he nudges my leg until I give him some attention.

DinoLil · 05/07/2026 18:15

My dog shoves her nose under my hand and doesn't stop shoving until I give her some fuss. If I stop the fuss before the expected length of time, she goes back to the nose shoving.

OverlyFragrant · 05/07/2026 18:23

I used to eat a banana for breakfast, or scrambled eggs. What was initially giving my dogs a tiny bit of banana and dripping any scrambled egg remnants into their bowl has become one of them waking up at 6.30, sitting by my bed and whining until I'm awake for her breakfast. She even stomps her little paws if I'm late waking up.
The noisy, demanding one will escort me to the kitchen, wiggling her back legs with excitement and tail wagging furiously in anticipation of breakfast.
They now get 3 whisked eggs between them and a half a banana each, I have been trained well.

Freysimo · 05/07/2026 18:32

When I was a child our mongrel would sit right in front of tv screen, his back to the telly, and stare at us until one of us guessed what he wanted. He knew he'd get attention because we were all looking that way!

Disturbia81 · 05/07/2026 20:45

Barks in the garden!

Gingerwarthog · 05/07/2026 20:48

Will grab a tennis ball and lob it at me.

Ipsevenenabibas · 05/07/2026 20:53

If I'm sat on my sofa trying to chill and my dog wants to go out for a walk she will sit in my direct eyeline and intensely stare at me. She won't move. She won't disengage the stare down (i swear she doesnt blink even) until I get up. Some would consider it intimidating but I find it very irritating. Nonetheless it's very effective; I can resist it to a point but in the end, it disrupts my peace enough to know it's probably best to give her a walk so I can enjoy the telly or a book!

BeardySchnauzer · 05/07/2026 20:58

Little dog will push a ball under a piece of furniture and lie forlornly staring at it until someone gets it and throws it for him. Or if he’s on the bed he’ll drop his toy off and look forlornly at it until it’s picked up. The forlorn look is very heartstring tugging.

big dog cuddles next to you and then paws you increasingly aggressively if you stop stroking him. He’s also very good at staying in your eyeliner when you’re eating

Jellycatspyjamas · 06/07/2026 13:00

My boy picks up a squeaky toy, goes to the top of the stairs and throws it down - it squeaks as it bounces down the stairs. He’ll keep doing it until I stop what I’m doing a play with him. He’s also knocked the phone out of my teenage DCs hands.

mistlethrush · 06/07/2026 13:08

Mine regularly has a zoomie session in the woods - which is fine, although he does tend to pick up a stick to play with. Apart from the problems that come from playing with sticks, after his zoomies have settled, he will often tend to lie down with the stick and start eating it - in order to get a game with thrown treats (because he enjoys the game and the treats and he knows I'll play in order to stop him eating the stick!).

He also is very temperature dependant and likes to be under the duvet, but a) can't apparently get himself under the duvet but once under, he has to get up and off the bed to shake his ears then of course needs to be helped back under the duvet...
