Is guardian ownership for breeding dogs common, or is this unreasonable?

I've never heard of Guardian ownership. It seems pretty unkind and the mention of potentially 4 litters, absolutely brutal.
Is this a common thing? https://cornishdoodles.co.uk/guardian-home-application-form/?fbclid=IwdGRjcASpuSpjbGNrBKm5HGV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHo5IDG7aLIwc-4JS-zqmHC_8_E_8JX28DKpuywbF2Z994Tt3kO62MaDcVD_0_aem_Z7EVwPCC_S5UGrIIaVw0KA

I have heard of it, but would not think it’s commonplace.

Looking at it as a concept, and knowing nothing of Cornish Doodles, or their motives, it seems like puppy farming by stealth.

muddyford · 25/06/2026 08:50

I've never heard of this before. From reading the link it sounds like a puppy farm trying to disguise the fact. And yes, four litters is brutal. The demands it would make on the bitch are horrific. The breeders I have sourced my gundog puppies from have a maximum of two litters per bitch. But they want their bitches to continue their working lives, not exist merely as a puppy-making machine. I wouldn't touch this situation with a very long bargepole.

springintospring26 · 25/06/2026 08:51

This reads to me like the definition of puppy farming. These are cross breed dogs being used as breeding machines. Four litters? It’s just farming

Somersetbaker · 25/06/2026 08:52

Agreed it's puppy farming and the farmer wants somebody else to pay to keep the dog, so they can get maximum profit." A Guardian dog remains registered to Cornish Doodles" they're mongrels who can you "register" them with?

Shittyyear2025 · 25/06/2026 08:54

Their puppies are £4500+ to buy.

Or, you can get one for free if you promise to pay for all the privileges(costs) of dog ownership AND pimp it out to have puppies (that they will sell on at £4500+ each) or stud duties that they will give you £500 for each successful litter of 4 or more puppies).

So, have one of our dogs, love it as a member of your family EXCEPT when we ask for it back to make a fucking fortune off.

Walk away op. This is not good for the dog or for a family pet

MotherOfSoManyCats · 25/06/2026 08:54

I have no experience with dogs in general, but this sounds horrible for a dog. Being moved about for the pure reason of making money for the original owners, who in turn want you to look after "their dog" until they can make money out of her! Then back she comes til next time. If she is as loyal and lovely as they say the breed is, she will pine for her foster carers at a time she needs them most. What a horrible set up.

Thatcannotberight · 25/06/2026 08:56

Absolutely agree with everything said here. I just came across a post on Facebook and was shocked to read the details.
I'm not looking for a designer mongrel so no skin in the game. I was surprised at the comments on the post who think it's acceptable.

I've only ever seen this setup mentioned abroad rather than the UK

SpanielsGalore · 25/06/2026 09:37

I have read about this before with Australian doodles. The breeders have extremely shoddy breeding practices.

The guardianship set up allows them to get around the terms of their breeding licences. I believe they are limited to how many breeding bitches they can have on the premises, so they swap them in and out of the production line. How anyone could agree to that for their beloved pet is beyond me.

The puppies that aren't wanted to be used for breeding are often neutered before being sold.

I think they mean more quotidian things than the Kennel Club. The microchip register and the vets, maybe?

TotesandReticules · 25/06/2026 09:46

I wonder whether they spread the “foster placements” around across local authority borders in a bid to remain invisible to officialdom? That might be part of it. “No we are not a puppy farm and the dam you’re talking about isn’t even living under your jurisdiction.” It might work to help them fly under the radar.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 25/06/2026 09:47

Christ. My dogs have Mlti Ch. lines and all SGWC and JW (plus outstanding health scores) and I charge half the price these con artists do. 😑

People really are mugs.

And that's even before the animal abuse people would be enabling by getting involved.

Also, bringing their children into their puppy farming business is just sick. Sure I will be yelled at for this, but I actually think that's pretty disgusting parenting. Not people I would want involved in my kids life - even tangentially - that's for sure.

SpanielsGalore · 25/06/2026 10:09

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks I haven't read the link, but I was amused by the 'ethically-run' claim. What fucking ethics?!

TeaSet · 25/06/2026 10:38

I can't quite believe what I'm reading here.

So you 'foster' one of their dogs, welcome it into your home, fall in love with it........then, they breed from it potentially once a year for four years....and you hand it back to them for a month. They HAVE YOUR DOG FOR A MONTH and whoopady doop, you can visit the poor soul for 'a walk'. Then they dosh the puppies out to anyone who will pay and hand your poor dog back to you.

No responsible, loving dog owner would tolerate this fucking nightmare.

The promise of a 'free puppy' and £500 a year is going to attract all the wrong sort of heartless arseholes.

I looked at these people's photos and bloody hate them.

OhBotherSaidPoo · 25/06/2026 10:43

It is fairly common amongst some reputable breeders of working and sporting dogs who want to better the breed by keeping the best breeding prospects, but for whatever reason, usually for lack of space, can't keep them all at home.
The homes they go to are usually friends and family, with the breeder being a very much active part in the dogs life.

This isn't what is happening here, this is puppy farming by proxy.

SpanielsGalore · 25/06/2026 11:53

@TeaSet I haven't read it, but surely they must have the dogs for more than a month.

Does the owner keep the dog for pregnancy and hand her over when she's due to give birth? Even then, it means the puppies are removed from their mum at 4 weeks old instead of 8.

NewGoldFox · 25/06/2026 11:59

I’m quite certain this was the exact tactic used when XL bullies were being churned out.

This.

It can work very nicely for all involved done right. Or it can be a shit show done badly.

Relieved that everyone thinks this is as grim as it seems. Poor puppies. I'm staggered that anyone would agree to this.

At £4.5k/puppy I'd be prepared to put a bit of effort in. Actually I wouldn't because I think breeding dogs in this way is totally unethical. The breeders have no concern for the dogs at all other than the amount of money they can make. I just can't believe that people are so gullible that they will pay vast amounts of money for a mongrel.

Yes, quite apart from anything else, this bit is a particularly appalling way to treat your ‘beloved family pet’.

Absolutely abhorrent. They are disgusting people. And anyone who buys in to this is naive at best and as disgusting as the breeders at worst.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 25/06/2026 13:02

Oh, and they’re breeding merles too, of course they are!
And considering they call themselves ‘ethical’ despite their practices, I would imagine there’s no guarantee they’re doing that safely either.
