Keeping big bags kibble fresh

Hello

How does everyone keep large openend bags of dog kibble fresh for over a month?

I have one dog, a labrador, who I buy 2.5kg bags for simply to ensure freshness. But Id like to have the benefits of larger bags - some brands only do larger kibble size in bigger bags, less expensive per kg and some brands only really do big bags for large breeds.

I would like to try him on.a 10kg bag of Essentials Dog food. It would take him about 40 days to get through that. So keeping it fresh will be paramount.

I'd prefer to keep the food in the bag and put the whole bag into a large airtight container once opened. Does anyone do this? The Simple Human airtight pet food bins look good and look like they may fit the bag + contents but £130 approx very expensive.

Has anyone found a good airtight solution where they don't need to empty the bag out that doesn't break the bank?

Could you split the bag into 2/3 smaller airtight containers? Cheaper and easier to move about than one humongous one?

I give my cats a mixture of 3 different dry foods and keep it (before i do the mix) in 3 airtight containers.

We open the bag of kibble and transfer to a large container with a sealable lid and scoop amounts into a smaller container inside for daily use.
Container is probably from B & M or Amazon. Nothing too expensive.

I keep a Curver wheeled dog food container out in the garage, think it was around £25? It just about holds 2 x 12kg bags inside as I bulk buy. Then I use a smaller container in the house to decant a weeks worth of food into at a time.

I've read that you're supposed to keep kibble in it's original bag and place the whole thing in an airtight container. Something to do with the oils reacting with plastic. Then buy the smallest bag you can get away with so it's not sitting around for weeks.
I appreciate that's not always practical, but I only have a little dog.

I keep 10 kilo cat kibble in one of these.

I leave it in the bag and put it in the tub, which I mainly bought because the cats were clawing at the bags and damaging them.

I just fold the top over and down. Not had a problem in over forty years.

It’s never occurred to me it needs keeping fresh, it’s dried anyway? I just have the bag open in the garage and take a scoop out, DDog absolutely fine.

Yeah this. It’s dried, so keeping it ‘fresh’ is meaningless. As long as you don’t get it damp it will be fine.

We bought dog food containers from amazon.

They were cheap.

We buy the large bags of kibble. Each one lasts three weeks for two labradors.

Beachbodyready · 21/06/2026 18:50

It takes my dog about 3.5 months to get through a 14kg bag. I put the bag in a giant Tupperware box. I think I got it from Nisbets, I googled bulk dry ingredients air tight storage container and paid about £35

Nourishinghandcream · 21/06/2026 18:56

We buy 11kg bags and as soon as they are opened, transfer into a Curver Petlife food bin.
Large hinged lid plus smaller access lid c/w scoop, all fitted with rubber seals to keep it airtight.
Bought from Costco years ago.👍

catslovehairties · 21/06/2026 18:58

Airtight plastic tubs with lids.

AbsoluteHoot · 21/06/2026 19:01

We decant ours into big lidded metal containers.

tizwozliz · 21/06/2026 19:15

Essentials sell a tub with a lid that will take one of their 10kg bags. I don't decant, just put the bags in as they are. Their bags have a resealable strip too.

bugalugs45 · 21/06/2026 19:19

Kibble is so highly processed , there’s nothing really fresh about it, as other posters say as long is you keep it dry it’s fine, hence why it has such a long expiry date

BreatheAndFocus · 21/06/2026 19:40

I have a smallish plastic slimline plastic bin I keep DDog’s kibble in in the utility. It has a flat lift up hinged lid. The kibble stays fresh in there. I then have a smaller container that I keep in the kitchen and restock from the bin.

The bin only cost around a tenner!

This is what we do too

Oldraver · 21/06/2026 19:52

We've got a box in wheels from Amazon that stores 7.5 kg

Saska70 · 21/06/2026 19:56

Thanks everyone.

@tizwozliz that's really helpful. I wasn't sure from the measurements of Essentials tub whether a 10kg bag would fit without decanting.

I think I'll go ahead and order a 10kg bag, the storage tub and a measuring scoop. If it goes well it'll work out at much the same price per kg as his usual brands for what seems to be higher quality ingredients.

I buy big bags for my two. I keep the opened bag in a cool dry place and fasten securely with a large clip . It always stays fresh.
The small bags are so expensive. Although I do buy those too as a treat if I find some of their favourite premium food on offer 🐕❤️

TheeNotoriousPIG · 21/06/2026 20:07

My dogs' favourite food (which doesn't cause any skin issues) only comes in 15kg bags, which have to be bought in bulk as the nearest supplier is 80 miles away. It is fortunate that my family lives that way on, and they bring us bags!

I decant them into storage containers from Amazon, more to stop DDog 2 from wolfing the lot, contain the kibble smell, and to keep the mice out (it's an old house and they live in the walls, despite my best efforts).

tizwozliz · 21/06/2026 20:12

This is an unopened bag in the tub
