Anyone else haunted by how their previous dog died and panic with their new dog…

This may seem mad, but I lost my last boy suddenly to cancer. He had been sluggish and off his food took him to the vets and he was PTS within a couple of hours as was deteriorating so quickly.

6 months later I got another dog as really missed having one. Had him for 2 years, he’s been such hard work but I’ve worked incredibly hard on training and he’s now bloody perfect, I love him so much.

But the last couple of weeks he’s gone of his food (still eating but become so fussy), has become really slow and has lost weight. For a vets appointment tomorrow.

But I feel sick, I’ve convinced myself he’s got cancer.

Not sure what I’m wanting but the thought of losing another dog in less than 3 years is horrible.

Im probably catastrophising but my gut is just telling me it’s not right.

Oh op, I am so, so sorry 😔

paintedpanda · 01/05/2026 07:14

So sorry OP. It seems like your boy had a lovely life with you Flowers

He looks like he was a lovely boy and had a great life in the short time he was here. Well done for doing the bravest thing not to let him suffer. I expect the house feels very empty.

Sending you much love, @TheBeatlesWhoarethey. It hurts, I know x

OP I am so sorry. Your boy looks like just my kind of dog. He looks so happy in your pictures. You gave him a wonderful life and definitely did the right thing by him.
It is tragic that his life was so short but he will have had no concept of that. Animals live in the moment and he will have felt that you loved him and when he was in pain, you made the incredibly hard and heartbreaking decision to make that stop.
He was a lucky boy to have such a great home.
Sending love to all who miss him 🥰💐

Oh I am so sorry, what a gorgeous boy

ShamblingMound · 04/05/2026 00:03

Oh OP, I am so very sorry. My heart goes out to you. What a beautiful boy. I am also a lurcher lover, and we lost our dear boy at the end of November last year, very unexpectedly and whilst we were abroad for the weekend. I had no idea anything was wrong and I was just devastated. I still think about him every day.

They are not just dogs … they are loved family members who are only with us for a short time. It sounds like your boy was very lucky to have had you. Our dog also died far too young so I know exactly how you feel, and how hard to lose another so soon.

I hope he is running free in a field with your other dog, and my dog too. I am thinking of you tonight. He knows that you loved him and that you will always love him ♥️ (edited to fix typo)

Oh OP what a lovely picture of a gorgeous hound. He is. And he’s smiling like that as he does.
I lost my 5 year old wolfhound suddenly. Nearly a year ago. When I walk in our favourite place I sometimes think I catch a glimpse of her. Running free. X

@ShamblingMound oh wow what a beautiful hound. It’s the ears that have me ❤️❤️❤️
