Anyone else haunted by how their previous dog died and panic with their new dog…

This may seem mad, but I lost my last boy suddenly to cancer. He had been sluggish and off his food took him to the vets and he was PTS within a couple of hours as was deteriorating so quickly.

6 months later I got another dog as really missed having one. Had him for 2 years, he’s been such hard work but I’ve worked incredibly hard on training and he’s now bloody perfect, I love him so much.

But the last couple of weeks he’s gone of his food (still eating but become so fussy), has become really slow and has lost weight. For a vets appointment tomorrow.

But I feel sick, I’ve convinced myself he’s got cancer.

Not sure what I’m wanting but the thought of losing another dog in less than 3 years is horrible.

Im probably catastrophising but my gut is just telling me it’s not right.

Oh OP I'm so sorry. That's so tough when he's so young.

Dextersgoneovertherainbowbridge · 24/04/2026 22:16

thats such a difficult call to make, OP, and I feel for you I really do. I hope you spend his remaining time making memories, giving him his favourite meals and having lots of cuddles xx

I'm s so sorry, how devastating. 😥Surgery isn't an option?

It would give him 6 months possibly if all goes well - we’ve decided not to put him through it. It’s personal choice so could understand others to go for it but doesn’t feel right for him. He finds being away from home very stressful.

I can understand that. Maybe spoil him rotten this weekend and let him go early next week? I waited 2 days too long with my last girl and I will forever feel guilty for that. Sending strength.

ThePlantPotter · 24/04/2026 22:51

I'm so sorry op 💐 it's clear from your post how much you love him and how lucky he is to have you all. I know it's so, so hard but try to enjoy the time you have together, make memories and give him lots of cuddles and kisses. Sending you big hugs xx

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 25/04/2026 08:05

I’m so so sorry. We love them so much. You are making the right decision for your dog, for what it’s worth it would be mine as well.

pilates · 26/04/2026 07:58

Hard decision to make op but I feel the best one. So sorry but you don’t want him to suffer 😔

Unbelievable2025 · 26/04/2026 08:10

I know how you feel. I just put my 15.5 yr old westie to sleep on Friday. She had bad arthritis, westie lung and, going blind. Hardest thing I ever had to do was let her go and I feel terrible. She stood in front of me shaking and crying on Thursday and I know it was time. I miss her so much and I hope she understands. In a world of pain right now and hope it gets better

Dextersgoneovertherainbowbridge · 26/04/2026 08:15

My heart goes out to everyone who’s been in this position. It’s horrid

Lovemyassistancedog · 26/04/2026 20:10

I'm so sorry. He's beautiful in those photos you posted. Flowers

This is devastating, I’m so sorry! Our last pup died just before his 5th birthday from cancer. Chemo gave him 9 more months and while he was well and in remission we got a puppy. It was a totally gut feeling and the best thing we could do. First dog was amazing with the puppy and she’s honestly what got us through the devastating time of losing our precious boy. A year on I still miss him so much my heart hurts. He was supposed to be the dog to grow with my teenage DDs. Now, every little thing with ddog worries us. If she doesn’t make it over 10 years I honestly think it’ll break me. I’m not sure we can have another dog because the loss is so painful.

Further update for anyone watching.

He has spent the day at the vets where he had a scan.

The scan showed a mass in his abdomen that is squashing his liver, he’s also got marks on one of his kidneys.

Weve brought him home and he’s on some medication to hopefully make him feel better. But in the next week or so we’ll have to make the decision to let him go. In the last 2 days he’s lost so much weight and he’s so exhausted.

I cant believe it. It’s pretty much the same scenario as my last dog 3 years ago but he was 10 this one is not even 3.

My DH has said he can’t do it again afterwards, so not sure when or if we’ll have another dog in our lives.

Edited

ah dear..that is so terrible, really feel for you 😢

TheBeatlesWhoarethey · 27/04/2026 19:32

Thanks everyone, further results back and these just confirm that his liver iw very poorly and he’s not got long.

Today he’s been quite sick and only just eaten a little bit of his tea. Spends him time sleeping and just staring into the distance. He’s so skinny now Sad not that he had anything on him to start with.

We’ve decided we need to make a decision this week, especially with it being a bank holiday.

It’s such a strange and horrible decision to make.

I am so so very sorry OP. It’s awful for you but you’re saving him from suffering and preserving his dignity. Thinking of you.

Dextersgoneovertherainbowbridge · 27/04/2026 20:50

I’m so very sorry 💔

longtompot · 27/04/2026 20:52

I am so sorry you are going through this again so soon after your last dog. It must be even harder as he is so young. For me, I think I would try and reframe things and having the knowledge of what your previous dog went through, you got help for your current one much sooner and he as got the help and care that he much needs. It's just so sad you won't have longer together.

I had to have my last dog pts last April as she had pancreatitis. I didn't realise she was as ill as she was, I just thought she had an upset stomach. But, knowing what she went through and what caused it I know I will do even better by my current puppy not to ever have a dog suffer as she did.

SnowSnow · 27/04/2026 20:54

How heartbreaking for you. Sending lots of love

EarringsandLipstick · 27/04/2026 20:58

Oh OP, I’m so sorry. This is truly heartbreaking. 💔

Dearg · 27/04/2026 21:03

So sorry Op, that’s such a hard decision to have to make.

Your boy is beautiful. Love him as hard as you can, before you let him go. Sending gentle hugs .💐

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/04/2026 21:05

Oh my goodness, this is so sad. I’m usually on The Litter Tray and just saw this pop up in active, but I am so sorry for you and your lovely boy.

CamillaMcCauley · 27/04/2026 21:10

So sorry OP. I lost my first dog at age 5 to a road accident (he got out of the house and spotted a friend across the road and ran to her without thinking, right in front of a car) and ever since have been utterly paranoid about roads and leashing - I want to shout at people who walk by roads with their dogs off-leash “You can’t trust a dog!!”

My second dog was diagnosed with severe liver tumour at age 11. I was told he only had weeks to live, but then they tried him on a liver pill that was meant to make it work better, and astonishingly he carried on for another two years with many good times before it finally started to fail and we had to make the decision.

I don’t want to give false hope but it was called Samylin, maybe you can ask your vet about it. Mine was a small dog and it was not exactly a cheap pill so it might not be an option, but we had such good results that I thought lt to mention.

adamduritzvocalchords · 27/04/2026 21:43

I’m so sorry for you and your family. They are not just dogs, they are family. We lost our first girl a few years ago and it took 2 years for us to feel ready to get another. I still miss my girl so much and the thought of going through the pain of loosing our current dog makes me cry now and she is only 1. The price we pay for having these wonderful creatures in our lives. I hope you can spend the next few days spoiling him rotten and perhaps giving him the things he would love but hasn’t had because they aren’t good for him.

TheBeatlesWhoarethey · 30/04/2026 22:05

Just to update you all.

We said goodbye to my boy today. He’s been really poorly the last 24 hours and had yelped in pain a few times. It was time.

Spent the evening looking at photos and watching videos of him.

I made a bit of an idiot of myself at vets sobbing but I’m sure they have seen it before.

No doggy to get out to have a ‘wee weeeeeee’ tonight. 😢😢😢😢
