Washing dogs in winter

MummySharkDoodoododoo · 23/02/2026 12:11

How do you wash your dogs in winter? It’s so cold to do it outside. We don’t have a bath and one do is long ish haired and sheds like crazy, so DH won’t let me do it in the shower, incase their hair clogs it up (I have suggested something to put over the plug to catch the fur but he isn’t having any of it).

They are too nervous (rescued from abroad) for a groomer.

before I book a DIY dog washing place miles away (which is another stress as dog doesn’t travel well). Am I missing a trick?
what do people normally do? One dog is XL
so nothing that involves lifting or small sinks

We have spaniels and I washed them outside with the Cold hose and some shampoo. but I have a bucket of warm water ready which I tip over them last for a final rinse of warm water. Then they get rubbed dry with a towel and then they wear their drying coats and go indoors. They seem to be fine doing this.

Learn how to unblock a plughole. Seriously though 'won't let' isn't good enough - would he rathe rhave the hair and dirt or use a drain unblocker?

SirChenjins · 23/02/2026 12:15

Either tell your DH to be quiet and look the other way while you wash your dog in the shower with the plug cover on (which is what I'd do - and might not be so polite), use one of those Mud Daddy portable showers, or contact a local groomer to see if they'd just do a wash?

RoachFish · 23/02/2026 12:19

Brush the dog first, then take the dog to the shower and get it done. I don't know who made your DH the boss of everything, but you can also make decisions that you feel make sense.

Hot and cold tap outside - baby bath for my small dog and when friends bring their ex-larges they get the shower attachment on the outdoor taps. Fleeces ready for a rub down after using Amazon groomer dog shampoo.

Mine likes to use the shower indoors but the outdoor set up is easier

Indianajet · 23/02/2026 12:26

I used to put my spaniel in a baby bath in the walk in shower.
I almost never bath my labrador - if he gets muddy I dry him off with a towel, then the mud just brushes off.

Thatcannotberight · 23/02/2026 12:26

What I do is have a double sized sink in my utility room, a pull-out mixer tap and a Border Terrier who fits in the sink. Sorry, that's not much help with a big dog.

MostlyGhostly · 23/02/2026 12:27

We fill a mud daddy with hot water, wrap in a towel to keep it warm and take it in the car when we drive to walks. It’s easy to shower off in a car park or pavement or you could just use it in your garden. A full one will do our large short haired dog fine after a muddy walk. https://amzn.eu/d/03ZSCIXU

Our neighbour has got a hot tap outside, with a showerhead on it and a long tray underneath it with a drain. We're having our kitchen replaced later this year and I'm planning the same as our old boy is 13 and putting the hosepipe on them is cruel. At the moment, I'm lifting him and his sister into the utility room sink which is no easy feat when they're both 19kg.

StormyLandCloud · 23/02/2026 12:44

We have a Samoyed who blows her coat only twice a year, but boy do they shed then!!! Ours only goes to the groomers, but I think they did her a really good brush first to take out as much as possible, then wash, like you say, use a plug whatsit to catch excess hair, and there’s always plughole cleaner if needed

Twasasurprise · 23/02/2026 12:57

We had a hot tap fitted outside when we converted our garage, but due to it having different pressure to the cold, the double ended hose just didn't work properly. It was either very hot or very cold.

Our plumber fixed it by fitting a proper shower mixer fitting there instead. Warm showers for the dogs outside are much better than using the shower inside, as it's usually fox poo that needs washing off 😖.

I'd love to find a suitable tray with a drain, but no luck so far.

CMOTDibbler · 23/02/2026 13:02

If you have the right sort of tap in the kitchen/ utility room, you can get a hose adapter to screw onto a mixer tap. Then put the hose through a window and using a spray head on the hose you have a nice hot dog wash in the garden.
Before I changed the utility tap to do this, I would do two buckets of warm water and a rechargeable shower (£30 off Amazon) to wash the dogs

DeanStockwell · 23/02/2026 13:07

I have a rechargeable camping shower ( for myself ) it's really good.
You submerged the moter / pump in a bucket if warm water and use it like a normal shower.
This isn't mine but it's very similar.

This probably won't be helpful at all, but my mud magnet of a spaniel gets a swim in the nearby lake once a week after a long walk. He loves it, and it leaves his fur lovely and silky.

I've washed dogs in the bath before now, but it ends up with the mud being transferred from the dog to the bathroom.

Nincompoo · 23/02/2026 13:12

I just put mine in the bath but it’s not a common occurrence as he’s not a lucky dog and he absolutely hates it!

21ZIGGY · 23/02/2026 13:14

As someone else said, get an outdoor dog wash installed. Mine was less than £100 although I already had a cold water source outside, they just had to add the hot and the shower.

shouldntbeonhereagain · 23/02/2026 13:31

I just hose my 2 down outside with cold tap and wash with shampoo. It only takes five minutes and then they are inside and towel dry. They are happy to swim in the sea in December, so am sure they will survive! We have had 4 lab/lab Bernese crosses and never used a groomer in our life.

CornishPorsche · 23/02/2026 13:33

Dog gets washed whenever. Dried off with a couple of large towels, heating on in the house, and away we go.

She's a 30kg husky mix who likes to roll in fox shit, so baths are an absolute necessity from time to time. I have a bath mat to stop her slipping, but we also have a shower only now. Just empty the plug of hair, surely?

We used to have a towelling coat for he r but she outgrew it.

plasbks · 23/02/2026 13:35

Family member had a tap that does hot water put in outside

TheBitterBoy · 23/02/2026 15:30

We have a warm water tap outside, it has a thermostatic valve which means it's always at 37 degrees C, so we can just turn the tap on and hose her down, no need for adjusting a mixer tap. Best thing we've ever had installed!

MindYourUsage · 23/02/2026 18:05

Get the thing to cover the shower plughole and tell your DH that you are also "not having any" of his nonsense.

Or rehome him. (The DH not the dog)

BiteyShark · 24/02/2026 06:16

We no longer have a spare bathroom that is easy to get a dirty dog into so now we use a mud daddy after a walk.

In cold weather it is filled with warm water then we dry him with a towel before putting a drying robe on him for the drive home.

PixellatedPixie · 01/03/2026 21:03

I have a hose that attaches to the kitchen tap and I put it through the kitchen window so that I can wash my dog with full water pressure and warm water. The warm water means he doesn’t squirm or shake as much and it washes the mud off more easily. He is an enormous dog and so this works better than the shower upstairs.

You can buy the attachment on Amazon for a few quid. I have the hosepipe running out into the side of the house where the bins are but you could do it into garden depending on what is reachable from inside tap.
