Dog pooing at night

Flitteryflatteryflips · 30/01/2026 19:39

My dog has been poorly with D & V. The vet said she’s probably had a virus. She’s pretty much better now, not pooing at all during the day and then doing it at night on the kitchen floor.

Has anyone got any suggestions for me to try? Previously she was 100% reliable with housetraining.

Could you take her for a bedtime walk to see if it gets things moving?

VickyEadieofThigh · 30/01/2026 20:49

What walks - how many, times and durations - does she get during the day?

ChurchWindows · 30/01/2026 21:23

My friend's dog had cystitis and somehow associated peeing on grass with the pain of the infection. Even when she recovered she would never pee on grass again, only gravel. Could you try different surfaces on your last poo break before bedtime?

Or perhaps, do you think she's afraid she's annoyed you with messing in the house or elsewhere and is not trying not to poo in front of you?

She has two off lead walks, one in the morning one late afternoon.

I’d try another one before bed

YeOldeGreyhound · 30/01/2026 22:36

To be honest, she should be pooing during the day. She is probably holding it in all day and then pooing indoors when she does not have access to outside.

More walks might help, especially somewhere different, and let her have a good zoom about. That can get things moving. Dogs can associate things like a painful poo with a certain area, so they avoid pooing there again.

Even something like a little walk around the block before bed might help.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 30/01/2026 23:01

I think dogs (and humans) can be left with a slightly sensitive digestion for a while after recovering from d&v

With my dog we tried the following: lighter diet for a few days/weeks to facilitate recovery. Reduction/avoiding treats - ( when well our boy has dog snacks and the odd little piece of cheese for example.)
if dog has an evening meal, give it earlier and a smaller portion than normal. As others have said, try a bedtime walk. And maybe longer walks in the day.
If it persists, I’d get her checked by the vet.

Flitteryflatteryflips · 30/01/2026 23:55

She’s been checked by the vet today. She’s fine.

What are her mealtimes like? Is her poo normal now?

As others have suggested, take her on a pre-bedtime walk and keep going until she empties her bowels.

EleanorReally · 31/01/2026 08:54

i gave mine cooked sweet potato
scrambled eggs
is the poo solid?

Flitteryflatteryflips · 31/01/2026 09:22

She went all day yesterday without a poo, despite taking her out at 11.30. Poo again this morning to clear up.

When she was unwell and had D&V did anyone ever tell her off or get exasperated by it? I wonder if she’s waiting until she’s alone because she feels safer.

Flitteryflatteryflips · 31/01/2026 09:29

Some is solid and some runny. There’s only me here, I would never tell her off.

We are going through exactly the same. A really nasty D&V bug. It took about 2 weeks for her stomach to be almost right and we’ve just had our first poo free night!

redboxer321 · 31/01/2026 09:33

Sounds like her digestive system needs some help. Clay is good, tree barks, lots of other supplements to help settle her. Have a look on Healthful Pets website.
Short term probiotics might help. The paste stuff, can't think of the name of it now but someone will know
Once she's settled, I'd get her on some longterm probiotics and digestive enzymes.

Edited to add: Pro-kolin is the paste stuff

Flitteryflatteryflips · 31/01/2026 09:43

She’s on probiotics. The vet said they no longer recommend kaolin paste.

Thanks for the solidarity. The vet said it’s a virus going around.

I just don’t get why she’s poo free all day and then going in the night.

i think I’ll give her three small meals this morning and then nothing, to see if that helps.

OP posts:
redboxer321 · 31/01/2026 09:46

That's interesting about the pro-kolin. Did they say why?
I don't think longterm probiotics would help much now, might even make her worse, that's my experience anyway, but something to make her solid, reline her digestive system and calm it may well help. Good luck.

Coffeeishot · 31/01/2026 09:53

My dog had this after Christmas it took a good 2 weeks to clear up and be back to normal pooing, .the prescribed pro biotics didn't seem to agree with him so i stopped giving him them, we also bought a fish and rice dog food in a tin after initial chicken and rice, and slowly introduced his own food back, which seemed to work well. your dogs bowel is probably still irritated.

Yes, I believe you’re right. Poor dogs, it’s a horrible bug.

Well get something to help her then! Plenty of products out there to help soothe the gut. Three small meals isn't going to do anything.
I get frustrated with these tummy bug threads. Always the same inaction.

It was, try going back to the begining with feeding and maybe stop the pro biotic, my dds dog also had it, dd gave her dog a spoon of natural yoghurt.on the meals .

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 31/01/2026 10:01

Viruses aside.
While your pooch is recovering from the bug what food is she on?
We have a whippet, prone to stomach issues (also due being a blimmin' scavenger) and we have him on wolf worthy dry kibble only when he has an upset stomach it seems to help ease or we mix with butternut box food. If the vet is happy it could be worth looking at digestive issues in general.
We aim for food with probiotics which helps with the bugs that dogs can easily pick up xx

She’s been to the vet and the vet gave her probiotics. The vet said kaolin is no longer recommended. The vet said three small meals.

Your tone is offensive.
