Dog pooing at night

Flitteryflatteryflips · 30/01/2026 19:39

My dog has been poorly with D & V. The vet said she’s probably had a virus. She’s pretty much better now, not pooing at all during the day and then doing it at night on the kitchen floor.

Has anyone got any suggestions for me to try? Previously she was 100% reliable with housetraining.

I suggested lots of other things too. Vets aren't always great on digestion although mine was really good the other day. Both you and your vet are trying to treat the symptom - pooing at night - rather than the cause - upset digestive tract.
But if you want to take offense rather than consider different options which may or may not work, that's up to you, @Flitteryflatteryflips

It was your tone @redboxer321 , it was offensive. You should look at the way you’re writing your ‘helpful’ comments.

whenever my dog has an upset stomach we always forget - to not feed for 24 hours and go straight onto the chicken and rice.
and then wonder why
hope the change in walking times improves things op

Well get something to help her then! Plenty of products out there to help soothe the gut. Three small meals isn't going to do anything.
I get frustrated with these tummy bug threads. Always the same inaction.

Why are you so angry the op has been back and forwads to the vet, she took medical advice, now she is just wondering why her dog is pooing at night.

As I said, you'd rather take offense than consider advice. You are free to do that.

Goodness gracious!

Sunshine1500 · 31/01/2026 10:36

I’d drop her last feed or give it a few hours earlier. Walk her before bed and keep her confined to one room to sleep.
am Enzyme cleaner can help clear up the smell so they don’t associate the spot with going to poo .

I am absolutely considering advice. Are you considering how your posts come across?

Her stomach is probably still a little unsettled - I'm surprised your vet was against Pro-Kolin, we always have some in the house for upset stomachs and it works wonders every time.

Twiglets1 · 31/01/2026 10:50

Have you tried putting her in a crate at night?

I'm amazed how even our 10 week old puppy has never pooed overnight since we got him at 8 weeks because of the crate. We did go down about 2am at first to let him into the garden which I would also suggest with your dog because of her upset stomach.

I will if you will. If I have been offensive, then so have you.

It’s not just me who thinks your tone is a bit off.

’Why are you so angry?’

Angry? No @Flitteryflatteryflips
Frustrated? Yes. Maybe triggered a little after my own experiences.
And surprised that that particular poster thinks taking your dog to the vet is all you have to do. It's not always enough as seems to be the case in your situation.

My dog really suffered with her digestion. And while I am no expert I have had to do loads of research. My first vet was pretty shit, if you'll forgive the pun, so much so that I had to take her to another vet in the middle of the night with her shitting in the car - I had to stop to let her out - then carry on driving - it was miles away - and they put her on a drip. So I know how hard it is. I was only trying to help. You don't have to take any advice but you don't really seem to want it. Only to argue. If you do want some 'helpful' advice, ask your vet about these discs they can give them. That's what my dog had from my current vet. He said they were similar to the clay I was using but better. They sorted her out a treat. Been brilliant ever since. Might not be the answer for your dog but, unless I've misunderstood, your vet seems to have pretty much done nothing.

I would also be cautious about putting in a crate overnight. I don't get any pain but when I need the loo, I don't have long to get there. Yesterday I got it wrong and suffered the indignity of shitting myself whilst walking my dog and had to walk home with my pants full of crap. And then I had to clean it up which was most unpleasant. A crate may help your dog reset but it would be too much of a risk for me. And if that offends you, tough.

Flitteryflatteryflips · 31/01/2026 13:32

I’m not going to crate my dog. She’s three and not used to being in a crate.

She’s not been well but ordinarily her digestion is completely fine. I honestly think it’s just a matter of time for her to recover. I’m not going to start giving her random things to eat because in my experience that’s a sure fire way of upsetting her stomach more.

She is definitely better than she was, so hopefully on the road to complete recovery. I hope I sleep better tonight. I’ve been so worried about her, she’s the love of my life. 🐾❤️

redboxer321 · 31/01/2026 14:23

So you didn't want any suggestions to try as you said in your OP.
Hope the love of your life feels better soon.

Flitteryflatteryflips · 31/01/2026 15:01

I’m giving her a late walk, as suggested, I’m feeding her earlier, as suggested. I’m not putting her in a crate and I’m not giving her random things to eat.

sweet potato and scrambled eggs along with chicken and rice are recognised to be good for dogs bowels

Flitteryflatteryflips · 31/01/2026 17:05

She’s having scrambled eggs and rice. I’m going to stick with that. I don’t think it will help matters to keep introducing something else.

OP posts:
Flitteryflatteryflips · 03/02/2026 09:45

My dog is now completely recovered. No more pooing at night. ❤️🐾

Brilliant news hope you and she have some restful nights now
