Interesting to watch different dog breeds…

…playing in the park this morning. There was a pair of retrievers playing fetch; a few hounds truffling in the bushes and tracking smells, and a collie slinking round the edges, trying to round them all up! Meanwhile, my own little companion breed sat contentedly at my side, gazing up at me adoringly, just happy to be near me.

It just entertained me, seeing how much they all conformed to the breed types when left to themselves.

Mine, Border Terrier, would be running around trying to get other dogs to play with her. Locally, she knows which ones are up for a crazy run around, from Cockerpoos to English Pointers.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 26/01/2026 12:34

My dog is a Cavalier KCS, and apart from other CKCS, and French bulldogs, he’s not interested in other dogs at all! He likes other versions of himself, or of my mum’s Frenchie - that’s it! If other dogs try to play with him, he just looks a bit bemused and trots over their owners for pets instead.

I did find it really interesting watching all the working breeds this morning - even their “play” is a variation of their “work”.

Tbf, my boy does his job - being my little buddy - very well!

What a gorgeous boy you have.

Mine is far too grumpy for a dog park, he's a typical scottish terrier, great with us but others he's not that fussed, makes for an interesting life with him 😂

Ylvamoon · 26/01/2026 16:59

Mine would have sat strategically overlooking the entrance or path, making sure no strangers approach unchallenged! Usually it's their back to my back- to ensure we have all angles covered! Somehow they always rope me in on guard duties 😆.
I have Tibetan Terriers that are very much in touch with their guard dog ancestry.

MindYourUsage · 26/01/2026 19:18

Make way for my poodle prancing about acting like she's the prettiest thing since fresh flowers in Spring 😂

She IS!

😂 she doesn't have (m)any other skills though. That's it. Prancing about...

In your park situation she is the equivalent of Elle Woods at baseball practice 💅😂

Hogwartsian · 26/01/2026 21:24

There are different personalities within breeds though. I have CKCS too but mine would have been running around like crazy.

You’ve just described my BT boy! He loves it when he sees his mates 🤣

VanGoSunflowers · 27/01/2026 07:35

I have a lab and I really wish he wasn’t interested in other dogs! He just wants to make friends with EVERYONE even if they don’t want to make friends with him. He’s nearly ten months old.

This one would be racing around trying to play with every dog and wanting fuss off every owner! She’s 10 and thinks she is 2.

Mine are an absolutely liability off lead when we get to anywhere where other dogs are playing / people are throwing tennis balls etc. They are lovely and so friendly but they are big dogs, EXTREMELY fast and very hyper bouncy so I have to assess the situation, see if I recognise the other dogs / owners and watch for small children or other obstacles in their way before they are unleashed 😬

Lansonmaid · 27/01/2026 10:32

Know what you mean about the collie slink and rounding up. Ours was tried with sheep by a previous owner but was useless (lost interest once the sheep were in a group), but still goes into the collie crawl when he sees sheep. And he’s a crazy fast runner!
Our other dog is (we think) a Carpathian Shepherd cross which is a flock guard breed in Eastern Europe. His first action when we let him out in the morning is to sniff the wind and listen out to see if there are any dangers around. He’s much more a slow padding along type of dog….

MrsLizzieDarcy · 27/01/2026 10:39

I've got 2 spaniels. I'm off work sick and both are currently leaning over the back of the sofa on guard for blackbirds and squirrels in the garden Hmm not very relaxing to be honest.

The little bastards chased a deer into the house once. That was an interesting morning.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 27/01/2026 10:58

Funnily enough, mine also likes to assume a sentinel position on the sofa under the window, so he can alert me to any person, dog, cat, bird or squirrel that might pass by!

No Cocker Spaniels rolling in fox poo or foraging for anything to eat as if they’ve been starved?
In the house they behave more like your adorable one cuddling up.

We had one of those ducks for our lab. Lasted 5 mins because it bit the head off and started trying to pull out the stuffing.

Limth · 27/01/2026 11:40

I love watching the dogs in the park. They all have such different personalities.

My elderly rescue border terrier bimbles very slowly around the park, sniffing and pissing on absolutely anything and everything.

She has no time for most other dogs because they are, frankly, ridiculous and beneath her.

She'll greet most of them nicely but that's about it, she's got better things to do that waste her precious time on dogs who want to do ridiculous things like play.

Unless its a jack russell in which case she'll spot it from 200m away and go absolutely feral thinking its a dog she has a running grudge with who died about 8 years ago.

Or unless its one of her three boyfriends in which case she enjoys nothing more than a big dick-sniff then a mini zoomie.

I think this is number 4! It’s her favourite you to choose in pets at home but then she also pulls it apart!

Mine is a livestock guardian breed too (Mioritic sheepdog mainly) and he has many of the traits. One of the oddest is that he likes to get up high in any new place and horizon scan. It’s unfortunate for him he now lives in East Anglia so we often wind up with him lying down on top of some tiny hillock taking in the scenery for a while. Sometimes people ask if he’s OK. He’s absolutely fine. He just likes to lie down at strategic points. He has also dug a big pit in a flowerbed in our garden to hide in which makes DH very cross but again seems to be a thing that Mios do. When there are other dogs that he likes in the park he’s really happy to have a run and play with them but he will either plod slowly for ages or charge very fast for a very brief period and then that’s it. All of which I can see are jolly useful behaviours for guarding sheep on a Mountain!

Shrinkhole · 27/01/2026 13:33

He is scared of water and finds it amazing that other dogs like to swim. He always acts like a crocodile might jump out.
He also has zero interest in chasing a ball. Just none at all. You can throw it but you’ll be fetching it yourself. He can’t understand why other dogs like balls. Before him I’d mainly had experience of labs, goldies and collies and I honestly thought ALL dogs liked balls.
He does very much enjoy ripping stuff up. That is an huge game to him pouncing on it and shaking it and ripping it and once I realised that we need to lean into this and buy cheap toys and accept they’ll last 2 minutes rather expecting him to treasure them gently everyone’s happy.
He’s not like a lot of dogs but once you know his quirks he’s lovely for himself (and very good looking)

Proccy · 27/01/2026 13:38

Boxer dogs, any other owners on here? What a breed, here's our younger boy guarding the house 🤣

When she was younger, my dog used to love methodically removing the stuffing from teddy toys

We gave up buying dog toys (even indestructible ones) and just bought from the charity shop. Old McDonald's happy meal toys were actually incredibly durable and about 20p a go.

My Springer is usually to be found in the deepest, stinkiest puddle he can find. Or in the river itself. Or rolling around in the undergrowth with his legs in the air. Most of my conversation with other dog walkers consists of them looking at him (filthy, dripping, entirely uninterested in all other dogs) and blurting out ‘oh, dear!’ Except of course I’d rather have my stinking specimen than all the other dogs in the world.

I bloody love the way labs behave with people they’ve never met. ‘HELLO, I LOVE YOU. TREATS?’ Wish I could get away with that.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 27/01/2026 14:05

My favourite dog that we meet on our walks is a Bernese Mountain dogs. Absolutely gorgeous, and so gentle that even my dog, who’s very nervous of any dog bigger than him, isn’t afraid of her.
