How much do you pay for your dog insurance?

MacBLT · 05/01/2026 12:56

How much do you currently pay, what did your insurance start at, how old is your dog, and what breed?

Our dog died last year and we’re going to get another soon but just want to make sure I budget adequately for insurance. I’ve heard premiums have gone up a lot lately.

TIA

Border Terrier , nearly 5 , £40 a month, probably go up as we had £8k claim . Recommend Many Pets !

canibearsedregularly · 05/01/2026 13:00

JRT £30 now aged 10 started at about £10 .Tescos
Have never claimed because her main issues are her teeth which are not insured by any insurance company.

HappiestSleeping · 05/01/2026 13:03

5 year old Labrador was £130 per month and had the top rate of cover. He was with Pet Plan. He had £7500 of treatment and year or two ago and the paid without any issue. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again despite the expense.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 05/01/2026 13:06

Pet Plan, 7k cover, started at £54 pcm for first year, now £65.
Giant breed, approaching 2 years old. No claims made.

Mirrorxxx · 05/01/2026 13:07

@canibearsedregularly teeth are covered by our policy with many pets.
we pay £65. That’s for the highest level of cover lifetime plan. He just turned 5. We did the first year with pet plan and it was about £35/40. We have claimed twice

MaterMoribund · 05/01/2026 13:13

5 yr old Lab, £65 per month with Pet Plan. She’s just had an injury that will cost this year’s premiums! We’ve never claimed before for her. Interestingly, the vet said that Pet Plan don’t put up premiums in response to claims, so although they can appear a bit more pricey than other companies it’s a steady inbuilt increase.
Tesco for our previous Lab hiked up the premiums considerably after our 2 separate claims six years apart. One set of tests totalled over £6000 though, so it was still worth it.

HighStreetOtter · 05/01/2026 13:14

New puppy, £15 a month. With Admiral. It was the top amount of cover I could find - think 12k. Lifetime policy

12yo dog. £41 a month. Never claimed. Excess is high at £250 and there is also a 20% copay now due to her age and also they have reduced her cover to 5k. It is still a lifetime policy which I don't know is worth it at her age.

Cairneyes · 05/01/2026 13:14

Pup, £23 with Sainsbury’s, 7.5K lifetime cover.

Lennonjingles · 05/01/2026 13:16

We were with Emporium for my border collie, it was a lifetime policy £30 per month for a medium cover policy covering upto £4,000 of cover. Once he turned 7, the policy almost doubled, so I cancelled and a now with Sainsbury’s £28 per month for £3,000 of cover. I know this won’t cover anything big, if it should happen, but I also save £20 per month, so I’ve got a bit put by, as I’ve not touched it.

KurtCobainLover · 05/01/2026 13:16

£42 a month with Pet Plan for my 5 year old Chihuahua.

Snowywren · 05/01/2026 13:17

Petplan for me about £400 a year, they have been brilliant with the couple of claims I’ve had to make. I’m glad I went with them from day 1 of getting my pup, and won’t look elsewhere. I believe I am getting good value.

GuppytheCat · 05/01/2026 13:19

£55 with Petplan. I had a cheaper policy for the previous dog but had to pay thousands when a big operation wasn't fully covered.

ObladeeObladi · 05/01/2026 13:22

5 year old lab bitch, £85 a month with pet plan

BiteyShark · 05/01/2026 13:23

Petplan 4K life policy. Now paying £99 a month as he is a 9 year old WCS.

Cant grumble really given we are many thousands of £ up over the years. It looks expensive on paper but I think every year we have claimed a lot more than the yearly cost of the policy. Next year though I think we have to co pay 20% when he is 10.

SpanielsGalore · 05/01/2026 13:29

Cocker spaniels. Both insured with PetPlan for £7k lifetime cover.

4 year old started around £18 a month and is now £38. It increased by around £4 a month for the first few years, but went up £8 in year 5.

1 year old was £22.24 for her first year and went up to £26.68 in year 2.

I have claimed £1000s every year for the eldest, including maxing out the full £7k in year 2. I don't think claims affect the price rise. (Not for PetPlan at least.) It's the age of the dog.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 05/01/2026 13:31

Oh...the tales I can write.

6month old Golden Retriever - £60
3 year old Golden Retriever - £85. Started at £60 a month.
6 year old Golden Retriever - £100
10 year old Golden Retriever - £140
13.5 year old Golden Retriever - £180

All with Pet Plan and all with £12K lifetime cover.

I was with Kennel Club, who cover up to £25K I think, but chances of going over £12K are low and if that happened I'd likely be looking at something that would be serious enough that the dogs quality of life afterwards would not be up to the standard I'd be happy with.

MacBLT · 05/01/2026 13:35

@TheHungryHungryLandsharks you have five GRs?! What a dream! Husband won’t go for a GR.

Interesting that pet plan may cover dental @Mirrorxxx as we were just saving up the £1k+ the vet wanted to remove dogs teeth when he died.

Can’t believe how cheap some of these are. Think we were paying £90 for our 11yo dog (from £35 when he was born). Guess it’s all in the breed!

Currently with Tesco
My 3year old cross breed spayed female is under £13 a month for life time cover and up to 7k a year
My pedigree 1 year old male currently still whole same cover is £28 a month

We were with petplan before and I had to claim for a previous dog, they were great but the policy' cost for both dogs was extortionate so I switched.

Male is cardigan corgi, female cardigan mix so they have plenty of health problems that might turn up from legs, back and other things
My mix has more extensive health testing done on her parents and grandparents than my pedigree so I know she's safe from alot of things at least but there's always accidents

Lelivre · 05/01/2026 13:37

£65 she’s 12 this year. Started at around £15 age 5 (rescue) lifetime cover for chronic issues (none as yet). I think it’s Asda

BiteyShark · 05/01/2026 13:39

My petplan policy covers teeth as long as a vet has checked them at least once a year which is never a problem as we are with the vets health plan plus we are never not at the vets 😆. We have had two claims for teeth cleaning as advised by our vet that he needed to have them done along with other claims for removing teeth but the teeth removal was due to a tumour.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 05/01/2026 13:42

@MacBLT I breed them 😀So I have great-grandmother, grandmother, mum, big brother and then the baby girl I'll breed from in a few years.

Your DH is missing out. They're perfect...even if their insurance is sky high and they shed fur like crazy.

My mother has a Cocker Spaniel who is about £100 a month and we think (she's a rescue) she's about 12/13. Like my 6 year old Goldie, she's never been claimed on...so certain breeds are definitely a bit expensive.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/01/2026 13:47

Currently £21.23 per month, £10k life cover with Sainsbury's (£99 excess). It's going up to £24.88 per month this month, but this seems reasonable from the searches I've been doing. I could get it a bit cheaper (or slightly more cover for the same price), but none of the cheaper / more cover for the same price providers have an exclusion period waiver if you're changing insurer (which Sainsbury's did have when I moved to them last January).

I've never had to use them to know what they're like to claim from.

Dog is unneutered male Labrador, aged 3 years.

havingamarvelloustimeruiningeverything · 05/01/2026 13:54

£20.73 a month, JRTxYorkie, 12 years old. Never made a claim, set it up when he was 8weeks old and I think it was about £5 back then. Animal Friends Insurance

Dearg · 05/01/2026 13:54

We are £76 per month with PetPlan for £12k cover for a 10 year old female lab.
we have a % excess as she is senior.
We are not covered for her food intolerance or pancreatitis because that was pre-existing. Which is a shame.

But her genetic arthritis and elbow dysplasia is covered and that’s costs a fair few £££ in the last couple of years.

My last dog was insured with John Lewis which became so expensive we cancelled it, as I am sure their underwriter hoped we would.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 05/01/2026 14:22

The other thing to factor in @MacBLT is that your location can make a difference. We discussed this on another thread and tested it out. @SpanielsGalore put in my dog's age and breed and was quoted a significantly lower premium than what I'm paying. She's about 350 miles further north than me and more rural.
