Doggy daycare

Would you send your dog to doggy daycare when it's really cold outside? It'll be between -3 and 1 degree tomorrow while he's there.
He's a small cockapoo.
The setting is dogs in fields, one barn which the dogs rotate to go into for around 1-2 hours a day each.

Is this place licensed? Is the indoor area heated and sheltered, with beds etc. for them to rest if they want to?

What plans do they have in place for dogs who are struggling in the cold?

I'm a dog walker myself and would want to know their cold weather policy and what they plan to do with dogs who are cold, or the weather turns, or if the fields are too icy for safe play.

Yeah it's licensed and has rave reviews. To be honest I'm getting a bit fed up of them prioritising money over the dogs. They have spend money on building a doggy swimming pool (which will cost extra to use) before building shelters in each of the fields for sun and cold weather. I cancelled a few days in the summer when I thought it was too hot to send him and saw photos afterwards of other dogs lying in the sun when it was clearly too hot 😔

Then I would follow your instinct and not send him, it's not worth it.

I have a border collie and I can barely keep him inside, so yes I'd send him in this weather. Obviously I am very much in the minority with that though!

I think there's a big difference between a border collie and a breed like a cockapoo though - borders have the right coat for all weathers, cockapoos not so much!

Glitchymn1 · 04/01/2026 18:24

They’re laughing all the way to the bank, why are you paying for this?! I think it’s cruel too.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 04/01/2026 18:30

I have a robust, double coated, livestock guardian breed that loves being out in all weathers. I still wouldn't send mine to a place where dogs are running around outside for most of the day. That is not my idea of daycare.

What do they do when it rains? Most dogs don't mind cold or snow, but the majority hate being out in prolonged rain.

They are outdoors in the rain, the heat and the cold. I don't send him when the weather is particularly bad but other do and there are always photos of the dogs looking miserable posted later!
On days when the weather is ok (i.e. not too hot or cold or rainy 😅) I think he has a great day but it's turning into a hassle finding alternatives at the last minute on not so good days .

Yeah, sack them off. There are far better options out there. I do a mix of daycare...small service run from home and a dogwalker.

To be honest, I'd have thought heat and rain are potentially worse than cold. At least with cold they'll warm up quickly when they go indoors. In heavy rain they must end up sodden 😞and for my dog, the heat would be the biggest danger.

Yeah the heat is scary. I'm surprised so many owners send their dogs when it's like 30 degrees 😥

How weird. Mine go to doggy day care they have a heated (if needed) individual indoor run with beds water etc and go out into secure fields supervised by kennel staff with carefully chosen friends or on their own unsupervised. They do this about 5 times a day. I assumed this is the norm.
They can’t wait to go rushing out of the car to get in as do all the other dogs who go.

Craftycariad · 04/01/2026 19:42

As others have said I wouldn't even consider sending to that type of day care no matter what the weather, although I know they are popular with those that use them. But I'm this weather I wouldn't dream of sending the dog there

FastFood · 04/01/2026 21:43

Haha absolutely not. My dog is currently sleeping between a hot water bottle and a big fleece blanket.

Now I know some dogs who wouldn't mind the cold weather at all, really depends on the breed.

Healthyalltheway · 10/01/2026 01:24

if you had a husky or a breed that was breed for the cold weather, no worries, but I have a similar breed to yours and they are not meant for cold weather and being outside like that.

Empress13 · 10/01/2026 06:35

nope it sounds dreadful like they just leave the dogs to it in an open field . What happens when it rains? Poor dogs . Sounds like a money making pit to me. As a matter of interest how much do they charge OP?

we are in London and our doggy daycare is way more expensive than that! £40 is pretty cheap for all day here

Wow, that’s insane. A full day of daycare (in a better environment than OP describes) is £22.

TBF, provided the dogs had free access to shade and water, that wouldn't bother me - my two were out sunbathing lots this past summer, and were well able to decide when they'd got too hot.

But I wouldn't be happy with fields with no shelter in the cold and rain, even though when I work one of mine she is mostly outdoors for 6-7 hours. I've also seen dogs out all day in the snow; some were fine, one or two were a bit miserable by the end of the afternoon - but that was a one-off. I also wouldnt worry about northern breeds (I've seen sled dogs happily sleeping the deep snow). But as a day-to-day thing for most pet dogs, hard no.

My dog would have hard being outside all day in the cold, the rain or the sun so that's probably most of the year! I wouldn't pay £40 for the privilege!

Is there other daycare locally?

There are others.. but its difficult as my work commute is over an hour and most of the others dont offer pick up and drop off and so it's really hard to make it work. I think i'm going to have to do it somehow though as know in my gut that the one she's in isnt right.

Would a dog walker be a better option, or can she not be left that long?
