If your dog has had pups at home, and the pups' dad is also at home, does the dad get involved with caring for them or does the mum do everything?

Bit of a strange one, but I'd like to explain what's prompted me to ask. On one of my socials, there is a group where people post photos of their pets (usually cats or dogs). Someone has posted a photo of their dog which has just had pups. The mum dog and dad dog are both at the owner's home. They are both the owner's pets. Dad dog is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier while the mum is a Bull Mastiff and Staff cross.

The owner has said that the dad (the Staffie) has been "very involved and helpful", and that they have "been amazed" at how dad has stepped up since the pups arrived. I've always thought that with dogs (and most animals), the mum does everything until the pups are able to fend for themselves. She nurses them, cleans them and generally looks after them. So I am wondering, if you have been at home with pups in a situation where the father of the pups is also there, would he get involved with them at all in the manner described? In videos I've seen on YouTube, the dad dog will usually just be standing there looking at the pups. I sometimes wonder if he even knows the pups are his. 😁

Of all the litters ive personally known of with mum and dad in same house, dad gets weirded out by these little mini versions and shys away. Is close by but like he's just keeping an eye on what the hell has happened 🤣 never seen any be overally involved.

BigDogJR · 11/12/2025 03:24

I think it’s a generational thing. Maybe he’s taken pawternity leave and wants to be more involved than his male predecessors would.

Dabralor · 11/12/2025 04:29

I don’t understand what there would be for the dad to ‘step up’ to do.

it’s not like he can help the mum to stick the. Laundry on or do the hoovering.

HappiestSleeping · 11/12/2025 04:41

Most of what gets posted on social media is tosh. This just looks like another example of it.

SmallTortoise · 11/12/2025 06:11

Modern dogfathers involvement Borders on Great (Dane).

He' does whatever he Cairn, to be at the pup's beck and Collie, tells them Tails at bedtime and if Mum's not close he goes to Retriever.

What is this? Who are these people?

They sound like they have cognitive issues to me, back yard breeders who know nothing about the animals they've got.

TheZanyMintViewer · 11/12/2025 06:36

Sounds like they're trying to be funny.

Well they sound like thoughtful, intelligent people from this so I suppose it could be true.

NAAAAT!

MyThreeWords · 11/12/2025 07:03

He gets praise for being "helpful" but I bet the mum is shouldering the mental load.

Squishedpassenger · 11/12/2025 07:08

Look up Gunner the Stunner. He has seen through a couple of litters of puppies and kittens as well as raising his son as a single dad.

BigBrownTabby · 11/12/2025 07:26

Some male dogs (and cats) are gentle around puppies/kittens, but generally the female will be so protective of her young, that she will warn him off or even attack him for going near.

In any case, openly promoting the breeding of mongrels of this type is pretty irresponsible and tells us a lot about the type of owner. This is backyard breeding.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 11/12/2025 07:43

They’re trying to make it sound like their dogs are softies who wouldn’t hurt a fly. They know sweet fuck all about dog ownership or raising puppies and shouldn’t be responsible for a goldfish, let alone a litter.

BeQuirkyMintScroller · 11/12/2025 08:08

In wild dogs the Dad stays around not to look after the pups and help with rearing but to generally protect the pack from hungry hyenas, stampeding elephants, defend their hunting territory etc

So while he might hang around, he is not licking or cleaning the pups, standing over them, keeping their little whelping box clean and all that

Sounds like anthropomorphic tosh to me.

Yes this they probably will be selling them soon and showing what a "big softie" dad is.

ACynicalDad · 11/12/2025 08:16

Utter tosh, someone is carried away with their marketing.

Aposterhasnoname · 11/12/2025 08:39

The only thing I ever saw was some dogs that belonged to a bar owner in Thailand. He had both parents and a large litter of puppies running round the beach near his bar. A stray beach dog attacked one of the pups, and dad flew to the rescue before mum had even got up from where she lay.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 11/12/2025 08:43

The only time I've been involved with a 'family bred' litter, the dad has taken himself off outside and moved into the barn and didn't want anything to do with anything (except his people). But these were working dogs.

I know some men like that!

PPs have nailed it I think. I've asked a few more questions about the dogs and apparently the owner isn't sure if the mum is a Staffie and mastiff cross because "they didn't get the paperwork from the person they bought the dog from". They are just assuming that she is. They have also shared further details about the dad. Apparently he's been teaching the pups how to walk, and he's been leaving half of his food for the mum because he knows she needs extra nutrition. He is also soothing the pups apparently. I don't believe it but it's entertaining. They haven't mentioned selling the pups yet but I imagine that will be on the agenda too.

Oh what utter bollocks. I'm surprised anyone falls for this utter twaddle.😂Next they'll be saying that the dad is lactating.

Honestly, though you've got to feel sorry for the poor mugs who buy a puppy off this clueless cockwomble - they'll be in for a nasty shock when the puppies are riddled with all manner of issues.

YYYDlilah · 11/12/2025 14:12

He's a brilliant dad. Took 2 weeks paternal leave and changes nappies and everything.

Edited

So Bullies, by any other name, like a lot of these "staffy and some sort of mastiff" crosses then.
