Dog sleeping arrangements

We've just come back from a few weeks away and our dog slept on the bed with us every night. I got used to this and loved to feel her warm little body next to mine and I could also reach out and stroke her during the night. Now we're back home DH has said he wants her to go back to sleeping downstairs because says she makes him itch. I have her on my side so I can't understand this. What does everyone think?

I think it’s important everyone gets a comfortable night of quality sleep. All my dogs have their own beds. They are hairy so I think all their loose hairs in the bed would make me itchy too.

GlassofRosePorfavor · 29/11/2025 09:43

Good luck telling the dog!

SpanielsGalore · 29/11/2025 10:05

Mine started sleeping on the bed with me when I went on holiday and she has done ever since.

Unless DDog makes him itch during the day, then it sounds like an excuse and he just doesn't want her in the bedroom.

XMissPlacedX · 29/11/2025 12:15

I have had my dog on the bed every night since he was a puppy, he is so cute and I love his warm little body cwtched up next to me. However on this one I’m going to have to agree with your DH. Only because sleep quality is important and if your DH thinks it’s going to affect his then you can’t insist I’m afraid. It was nice of him to let DDog sleep on the bed whilst on holiday, maybe he can let him every time you go away as a
nice treat? Could ddog maybe have a bed on the landing instead as a compromise?

XMissPlacedX · 29/11/2025 12:19

I should add, I have crap sleep since he has been on my bed. He is tiny but somehow manages to still take up the whole thing. Dug myself a right hole.

Coffeeishot · 29/11/2025 12:23

Would your dog sleep in its bed in the room I mean it might jump.up in the night so that might be a "bind" 😀

JudgeBread · 29/11/2025 12:26

Human comfort trumps dog comfort imo. My dogs only sleep in our bed on bonfire night because one of them is truly utterly terrified the whole night - the rest of the time they kip on the sofas downstairs or on their beds in the office next to our bedroom.

MrsMitford3 · 29/11/2025 12:46

I want to start by saying my little dog sleeps in bed with us and I find it very comforting-especially when I wake at 3:00am and catastrophise.
TBF my dog has always sleep with me since childhood.
obviously not the same dog.

All I will say is that it's hard to get them out once you have let them in and the howling may be a dealbreaker...

would the dog's bed in your room work?

SazKaka · 29/11/2025 14:20

Urgh! I find it ick to have animals on the bed.
Their paws, mouth and ‘personal’ areas (!) near my clean bed linen is a gross thought.
Sorry but I agree with your DH.
Dogs need their own space as much as humans do.
Get a cuddly teddy lol

snoopythebeagle · 29/11/2025 14:29

Our dog has slept in the bed with us since the day we brought him home.

But if your DH isn't happy then you need to go back to the original arrangement.

MSJ1402 · 29/11/2025 14:55

My American bulldog has always slept with me (he came before my partner), then we got our Great Dane and my partner said he couldn’t sleep on the bed anymore as it wasn’t fair one being on the bed and one not.

Other half recently upgraded from a double to a super king to accommodate our giant oaf 😂 neither of us ever have a full nights sleep, but I love having them close to me. They make me feel safe and they keep me warm 🤷🏻‍♀️

it is one of those things where it is each to their own.

TeenLifeMum · 29/11/2025 15:28

Ddog sleeps in a crate in our room. I’d happily have her on our bed but dh is resisting. I do think you have to be in agreement so I won’t push it. Our old dog slept on our bed when he was 2 onwards but I was going through a traumatic life event and it helped me sleep so dh was onboard with that decision. I’m sure he’ll cave at some point with this one!

BuildbyNumbere · 29/11/2025 16:34

I couldn’t sleep if my dog was on the bed but why on earth did he allow it on holiday … why wasn’t he itching then???

I'm guessing the dog didn't settle in an unfamiliar location?

Zippedydodah · 29/11/2025 17:08

I’ve never had dogs on the bed as a permanent thing, only on the odd occasion when one wouldn’t settle on holiday.
i’m a very restless sleeper, i sleep on my own and I would hate the hairs everywhere.
My dogs aren’t allowed upstairs other than when older dog is scared (fireworks, thunder) when she goes upstairs under my craft room table with the blinds pulled and the radio on.

somewhereintheworld · 29/11/2025 17:10

Dog slept downstairs last night and was fine, but I miss her 😔

well, come up with a compromise? Cuddle with her for a few minutes then DH takes her downstairs?

BuildbyNumbere · 29/11/2025 20:04

Can’t she sleep in her own bed in your room?

Wexone · 29/11/2025 22:04

Sorry all my dogs sleep on my bed. sometimes the cat too 😝 but we have a super king so loads of room. there is also dog beds in our bedroom that they can sleep in when they don't want to sleep in our bed. could you do that ?

StarDolphins · 29/11/2025 22:11

Theres nowhere in my house that our dog isn’t allowed. I’m currently single though. If/when I’m open to a boyfriend, I’ll bring it up quite early in the dating stage to see if he agrees. If he doesn’t, I might message Ricky Gervais😁

Can’t she stay in your room in her bed so she’s near you?

GlassofRosePorfavor · 29/11/2025 09:43

Good luck telling the dog!

lol this ! Seriously tho I don’t like dogs on beds never understood how you can let a dog who has been out in God knows what lying on your sheets. My dog has his bed in our room love hearing him snoring 😁

longtompot · 29/11/2025 23:32

My dog used to sleep in her bed on the floor next to me until about sunrise, then I'd get a boop on the side of my leg, or feel her front legs up on my side of the bed and her tail whick whacking the wardrobe and then I'd pat the bed and she'd jump up. Miss her so much 💔

But, you both need to have a good nights sleep which ours was impacted on with her being in our room, especially in her last year. Prior to sleeping in with us, she was downstairs sleeping on the sofa. But this had to change when our cat started to have sight and other health issues and we needed to lock him in at night, so she came up with us.

Umidontknow · 30/11/2025 05:52

I'd tell him he was welcome to sleep downstairs 😆

Mumsworkneverdone · 30/11/2025 05:56

Me and my husband have separate rooms because I need space in my bed for my cats. We are both happy with this arrangement. Great sex life etc I often wake in the night and they are such a comfort.
