Hi, I was wondering if anybody had this type of dog? Can you tell me what they are like eg energy wise, temperament etc?

Previously had a working type German Shepherd and show type Labrador.

Thanks

I have a miniature cockerpoo puppy (now 9 months….)

As I have said before on here we went in completely naive and fell for all the doodle hype/rubbish. We were completely had by a glorified puppy farm. Please don't make the same mistake. If my boy wasn’t so gorgeous and doing so well I’d say it was the biggest mistake I ever made. But he’s wonderful and with consistent training can be relied upon to be calm when needed, despite the reputation cockerpoos have. We obviously still have a way to go with training but I think the doodle problem is both the unethical breeding and the lack of training some receive.

My vote would be miniature poodle based on my experience and what you are looking for.

Been researching the miniature poodle, they are tiny! I don’t think I could do that size.
I think I need a dog around 20k, back to the drawing board…
But thank you to everyone for your input, it’s been very helpful.

Yes they are - I was really recommending them for the other poster that asked tbh.

Portuguese water dog, Toller or lagotto?A standard poodle fits the size brief but wouldn’t be a personal choice for me
Or a working lines Goldie bitch would fit the size requirement just about…..my new baby is likely to be around 24kg when grown

@GoodBones85 you must be one if the rarest doodle owners who gets it.
There is only 1 doodle I personally know who I would class as a perfect dog. The difference between this one and the numerous others I personally know (cute but utter nutcases and unfortunately irritating at times), is that the owner treats it like a proper dog. Puts in the time and effort as if it was a Labrador or German Shepherd. You really can't fault this dog (and owner). And it was a pandemic puppy! Bought for the kids because everyone was at home for the foreseeable future. But here we have a really committed owner.
So, purely from personal observation, it can work if you are completely dedicated to the cause. It is rare that it happens but it's not impossible.

Yes I agree. I think the difference is I would have happily had a lab or a German shepherd and put the time and effort with them, but DH thought a doodle would be a better fit for us and I was so desperate for a dog (wanted one my whole life) that I said yes. And although we would make a different decision now with the benefit of hindsight, I’m still putting the effort into him as I would have had I got a lab or other breed.

He has a long way to go, especially with reliable recall and meeting other dogs, but he consistently sits patiently while we eat in exchange for a small treat once we are all finished, he sits before we cross any road, and is pretty good with drop it/leave it already.

What I don’t get is why more people don’t put the effort in because whilst it’s super hard work - I've found it to so rewarding once you make progress. But I appreciate I’m still a real novice!!!!

Nothing with the word "doodle" in it is calm

Rubbish 🤣

I've said this before on here, but if you're saying ALL doodles are nuts, then what you're actually saying is that poodles are, as this is the only thing they have in common. Yet everybody says "why not just get a poodle" 🙄

I've not been on this forum for ages, as I got so tired of all the absolute bollocks spouted about poodle crosses on here. The only parts that aren't a load of crap are that there are far more unethical breeders than there are decent ones (although people on here will tell you there aren't any at all), they are never guaranteed to be non shedding and certainly aren't hypoallergenic, as no breed is truly anyway.

OP you're right that many Aussie labradoodles are used as therapy dogs as they're pretty laid back, plus you have a little more idea what you'll end up with due to the many generations of them, IF you find a reputable breeder. My dog is poodle/GR/lab and she's the most lazy, chilled out dog ever. I actually had a lady comment recently, on one of our walks, that I must be so proud to have a dog like her. And I did after that comment and after all the bullshit I've read on here, and also as nobody has ever said that about my actual children 😳😂

Anyway, I doubt I'll be back, but good luck with your search OP. I looked into all kinds of breeds/crosses for a few years before I got my girl and it definitely paid off as I honestly couldn't have imagined a dog with as lovely a temperament as mine.

How about another lab? We have a working lab and she is very petite, only about 22kg. You have already had that breed so know what you are getting. (Which in biased opinion is the best dog in the world!) in the past we had a labradoodle and god rest his soul but never ever would I have another. He was very very anxious, barked all the time, very needy and also had skin issues.
Our 3 year old lab girl has been an utter utter dream compared.
good luck with your search for a new companion x

Twinklymoose I have come to the same conclusion. I think it will be another lab, which I have always loved. It will be my 3rd one.

I have to agree with hopping green too though, not all doddles are nuts. I know some cavapoos who are the calmest dogs ever. A lot of it depends on how they are brought up, like any dog.

Thank you again for everyone’s input, extremely helpful.

Edited

My working line lab is also petite at 21kg. Imo one of the best breeds

I think that’s a great decision. The best thing is as much as they LOVE walks and runs and would go and go they are also so lazy at home! Ours just sleeps most of the time!
please report back with photos if and when you get your next 😻
