Hi, I was wondering if anybody had this type of dog? Can you tell me what they are like eg energy wise, temperament etc?

Previously had a working type German Shepherd and show type Labrador.

Thanks

Portuguese water dog

Toller
lagotto

Heading towards my 60’s so something a bit easier. About a 30 - 40 min walks a day. Got to think long term now

Now I'm probably going to sound silly. What's the difference between an Australian one and a British one? Ps. I know zilch about breeds!

About £3k and even more zealously gullible buyers.

We were considering this breed as we need a non shedding one, and I had heard that their temperament can be calm enough to be therapy dogs, which I was hoping might help AuDHD DC. Didn’t know that their breeding was perhaps not ethical. Can anyone recommend another breed which might tick our boxes?

I’m going to be brutally honest here. I do not know of a single breed that would have their needs met by such tiny walks……unless you mean 30-40 minutes at least twice a day?
Even my 13 year old Goldie does an hour and a half!

Nothing with the word "doodle" in it is calm

1587S · 02/11/2025 18:43

Sorry, definitely twice a day! I have a large garden too (3 acres) so would have the run of that too.

i am used to long walks, so not something I can not do, just thinking long term.

Generally when someone asks for a doodle, they are pretty much describing a poodle.
Every mini poodle I’ve met is lovely - I’d start there tbh

Mine would be very happy with that garden and walks of that length. But I'm guessing you wouldn't want a giant breed...?

1587S · 02/11/2025 19:01

Definitely not huge, all of my dogs have been around 40k, looking around 20k now

Looking at miniature poodles now. I wasn’t keen on a poodle as I remember my granny had a standard one and it wasn’t a nice temperament, but maybe it’s the way it was brought up.
I have always had lovely calm dogs

Standards can be a bit neurotic tbh and defo not as easy an option ime
When I’m too old for a big dog, I’ll get a miniature poodle

I probably am too old for a big dog (nearly 62) but just can't find a smaller breed I like. Smooth Collie would be tempting if they weren't so rare.

Not always immediately available (not that pups from good breeders are usually immediately available anyway!), but there are Smooth pups about regularly - the wait wouldn’t be long.

That’s the trouble, loved all my big dogs. But next one needs to be smaller.

i have always spent a lot of time and effort on them, its so important to get it right.

Thanks. I think it's one for me to consider. Current girl is over 50kg and I'm not a lover of tiny dogs. I also favour the pastoral breeds so I shall definitely keep the Smooth Collie in mind. Don't mind waiting for the right pup.

Sorry for derailing your thread slightly @1587S but I understand the concept of wanting a more manageable dog, even though I did let my heart rule my head last year and got another giant. As you rightly say, it's important to get it right and I wish you luck in your quest for the perfect dog.

1587S · 02/11/2025 19:43

What type of dog do you have? 50k is super large!

Pyrenean Mountain Dog. I've lived with the same breed since 1977 so it's not easy to think about downsizing. Current girl is a real handful to walk, but very quiet and calm at home. The moulting is the worst thing about them 😱

1587S · 02/11/2025 20:01

Oh gorgeous dog, hard to give this one up.
Loved my big German Shepherd, he was 45k, walked beautifully when he got to around 3, after a lot of training!

DH can't see himself as a poodle owner. But I think you make a good point.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 02/11/2025 20:06

Oh, I bet he was handsome @1587S It's the hardest thing about getting old when you've loved the big guys like that. This girl might be my last, realistically...😢

People kept suggesting cockerpoos, but I've never met one of those that wasn't insane so discounted them.

1587S · 02/11/2025 20:25

Definitely not a cockerpoo, met loads too. Not for me.

As long as you don’t get them that silly haircut, they look very similar to a lot of the doodle mixes tbh
With a guarantee of non shedding, not something the mixed breed dogs can claim with reliability

Yes - I met a couple with a poodle recently and the cut it had made it look like a bichon. Really sweet dog and very friendly.
