Why isn't my dog arsed about fireworks?

Snoozing his pretty little head off whilst the bangs are hailing around us.

I would deem him a fairly nervy dog, really doesnt like traffic especially when its raining and gives off that whooshing noise. Hates heights (wtf?) and not really keen on other dogs.

But fireworks? He's grand!

My two labs are not fussed at all and one of them is nervous of a lot of other things! It’s very strange.
My horse hates them though ☹️

Our Border Terrier when younger would stand in the garden and intermittently watch them or bark at them in a “come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough” type way. As he got older this changed to being frightened of them. No idea what changed? One year fine, the next year on the sofa shaking with DH under a blanket and Classic FM Music for Dogs on the Alexa and just about calmed down.

LupinLou · 02/11/2025 11:44

I know labs who work as gundogs who hate fireworks.

We have one who is oblivious and one not keen. There's something about fireworks particularly that bothers the not keen one in particular, she's fine with thunder, crow scarers, shot guns and similar loud noises. She also is totally fine with fireworks on TV turned up loud, but the real thing is different.

I have an incredibly nervous dog who doesn't mind fireworks. Im sure he would out of the house but inside the house hes happy to eat etc when they are going off but hides at most mundane thing

My theory is that he has no hierarchy of scariest things, so for him a bin closing, door closing etc is no less scary then fireworks. A dog who's a bit a more adjusted might notice things out of the ordinary a bit more and be less used to getting a fright than mine whose permanently being surprised by things.

Sort of the reverse of when you take kids to the zoo and older kids know to be excited by rare animals, but little kids are just as excited by a goat or fly as they are by a giraffe.

muddyford · 02/11/2025 16:21

First Labrador was gunshy and hated fireworks.
Second Lab worked on a shoot and would watch fireworks and go for a pee in the garden while WW3 was raging.
Spaniel worked but was terrified of fireworks until his hearing started to decline a couple of years ago.
Third Lab is bombproof in every respect.

It does seem down to luck.

My cat who is scared of squirrels and the hoover couldn't gaf about fireworks either. My no doubt contraversial opinion is that people who hate fireworks genrally have pets who are scared of fireworks because they've been picking up on their owners agitation and annoyance since they were little pups/kitties.

mondaytosunday · 02/11/2025 16:27

My dog gets stressed at a leaf. But she’s cool about fireworks! She’s also getting pretty deaf (she’s 14), but she’s never been scared of them.

ThisCanFuckOffToo · 02/11/2025 16:28

Mines not bother by them either, I’ve never had an animal that has been tbh!

GameofPhones · 02/11/2025 17:16

'Our Border Terrier when younger would stand in the garden and intermittently watch them or bark at them in a “come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough” type way.'

My sadly deceased DDog was like this, more angry than scared, and would run window to window, unappeasable. My present dog is scared of almost everything, but not fireworks (thank goodness). It's a puzzle.

eurochick · 03/11/2025 12:21

My cats are scared of their own shadows and hide under the furniture if any strangers are in the house, but are totally unbothered by fireworks. Even when our neighbours had a huge and very loud display.

PietariKontio · 03/11/2025 19:14

I used to have a Golden Retriever he gave no shits about anything really, all of life was a joy,and unless someone or something posed him tangible harm he saw them as just being objects of interest.
Aside from a fair amount of stubbornness, and never knowingly not trying to eat anything that could possibly be edible, he was a perfect dog.
I miss the rascal.

hardtocare · 03/11/2025 19:16

Ours is the same. Super anxious but doesn’t care about fireworks. It’s his one redeeming quality

ThatsNotAKnife · 03/11/2025 19:23

I saw a guide dog puppy in training at a display last year. It was being carried and totally unbothered.

crumpetswithcheeze · 03/11/2025 19:41

Gun dogs tend to not be as scared as other breeds (for obvious reasons!). Also if a puppy is born a few weeks before firework season, and spends that time with its mother, who isn’t scared of fireworks, they are less likely to be scared, so I once read.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 03/11/2025 19:45

Mine couldn't care less. Nothing really fazes her apart from being separated from me.

RedRosie · 03/11/2025 19:53

My mum had a little dog (RIP Petal) who loved fireworks. Used to ask to go out, and then sit in the garden looking up at the sky with immense concentration. She liked airplanes too.

Dogs are weird.

Arran2024 · 03/11/2025 20:07

I have two bernese mountain dogs. One is scared of just about everything and the other is totally chilled but they both couldn't care less about fireworks - which is just as well as we have had them going off round here every night for 2 weeks now.

spiderlight · 06/11/2025 12:56

Mine's the same. Very anxious rescued ex-puppy farm breeding bitch. Terrified of slamming doors, metallic clanging, any loud unexpected noise nearby, narrow paths, the cat round the corner, Chows (and, by extension, any dog with big hair that might turn out to be a Chow) - I could go on - but absolutely ZERO reaction to fireworks. We had idiots letting off bangers that sounded more like bombs last night, someone letting off rockets in the front garden of the house opposite, and a big public display in the rugby club barely a mile away - not a flicker of concern. It's a relief but it does mystify me!

HelloCharming · 06/11/2025 12:57

Ours is the biggest drama queen on earth…worried about getting out of the car at her favourite beach, hates traffic cones….fireworks, just snoozes away.

That would make sense - ours was born on 3rd Sept so would have heard them when he was wee with his mum, dad and siblings
