Why isn't my dog arsed about fireworks?

Snoozing his pretty little head off whilst the bangs are hailing around us.

I would deem him a fairly nervy dog, really doesnt like traffic especially when its raining and gives off that whooshing noise. Hates heights (wtf?) and not really keen on other dogs.

But fireworks? He's grand!

It depends on the dog. I had three Border Collies, two of whom were frightened of the sound of fireworks. I had a Black Labrador who wasn't in the least bit bothered and slept through even the noisiest night. My existing dog who is a cross of both breeds would bark at the sound of them when she was younger but now aged 12 cba and sleeps through them.

Wineinthegarden · 01/11/2025 22:01

Mine is the same! No cares given about fireworks or other loud noises. Incredibly sociable and loves all people. But barks like crazy at the lounge door.. I am starting to think the door is haunted and he can see a presence!

LoveSandbanks · 01/11/2025 22:05

We’ve only ever had one dog who was scared of fireworks. She was also scared of thunder!

used to have a toy poodle who was practically scared of his own shadow but seemed utterly deaf to fireworks.

longtompot · 01/11/2025 22:07

Mine, a cocker spaniel, was the same. She used to wander around in the garden when it was thundering and lightning and same with fireworks. I would just keep her in during those, and didn't do evening walks during this period, as I was more worried she'd get hurt by a stray one

BauhausOfEliott · 01/11/2025 22:08

Loads of dogs aren’t and it’s so odd that some are completely fine with them and others are terrified. My sister had two dogs, same breed. One was absolutely petrified and used to shake and cry, and the other just completely ignored them.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 01/11/2025 22:09

Our eldest has never been bothered (cocker spaniel) but the younger one (sprocker) is currently hiding under the bed in the spare room shaking. She's had an emergency dose diazepam from the vet that we had in the cupboard but it's still not helping much.

I want to go outside and scream at the fucking neighbour who has been using them for the last hour.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/11/2025 22:09

Mine don’t care at all - we watched them out the window

ThisIsMyBurnerPhone · 01/11/2025 22:09

My old dog snores (and farts) through the fireworks, always has done. He doesn’t like umbrellas at all, and will howl and tremble if I go to take an umbrella out with me, even if he’s not coming with me. We’ve had him since a puppy and no bad experiences with umbrellas to report. It’s a mystery.

We’ve got a young dog too, first experience of fireworks in recent weeks. The young dog was a bit nervy when the first ones went off just before Diwali time but saw the old dog snoring away and now, after what feels like a couple of weeks of daily local fireworks, we’ve noticed the young dog has been snoring (and farting) through them too. The young dog isn’t bothered by umbrellas but gets very jumpy about sun hats. Winter hats are fine. It’s sun hats that are the devil’s work.

Dollymylove · 01/11/2025 22:31

Our late Ddog hated fireworks. She used to hide under the stairs. On the other hand, our late Dcat loved them and sat on the window ledge watching them. Our current Dcats: black one hates them. White one couldn't care less 😆😆

Twiglets1 · 01/11/2025 22:37

I think it’s normally connected to whether or not they were exposed to loud sudden noises as puppies in the socialisation period.

You can get recordings of fireworks & other noisy things to play to puppies to get them used to it when they are at the fearless stage.

Breed may also have an impact - the 2 Labs I had were both completely unbothered by sudden noises but they tend to be a laid back breed anyway.

TeenLifeMum · 01/11/2025 22:39

Last dog we trained during fireworks as he was quite young. Current dog will be a year old in 5 Nov. She’d super chilled. No need to train her. Previous dog was terrified of the window cleaner though.

Mine is the same. Scared of everything except fireworks!

I have a poodle cross (Pomapoo) who is scared of everything EXCEPT fireworks.

Is some of it breed related, we have a Labrador, parents were working dog, doesn’t move, daughter has a sprocker, same thing, but our cockapoo is a wreck, has to have sedation every night while the damned things are going off.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/11/2025 10:34

My chihuahua gave zero fucks last night. She was under our heated throw living her best life.

nicky2512 · 02/11/2025 10:41

My schnauzer is a very nervy wee boy. Scared by leaves blowing and all sorts but could not care less about fireworks or thunder. Thank goodness. Fireworks here last night after 11 were horrendous. Sounded like a proper display (def wasn’t as we are in small village). Lots of reports on Facebook this morning about terrified pets and one wee dog has escaped and ran off.

Mine is a cockapoo! Show line, not working cocker.

Same reason DP is deathly afraid of spiders while I'm fine with them, but I have to leave the room any time there's even a risk of someone getting burnt on TV.

We're all individuals, with our own fears and idiosyncrasies. Your dog is too.

FrothyCothy · 02/11/2025 11:04

Ours hasn’t been bothered for the last 4 years but was really stressed last night unfortunately

feelingalittlehorse · 02/11/2025 11:07

Currently on dogs No. 4 and No. 5 and none of them have ever been bothered. Maybe DDog No1 not being bothered then passed it down 🤷‍♀️

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/11/2025 11:11

Just be glad you are lucky! Although I fully appreciate the challenges with regards to the epilepsy (I have a cat with it). I have four rescue dogs, all pretty nervy with fireworks but one is absolutely terrified - it’s really upsetting to see, and I try anything and everything to help him (apart from my boyfriend’s suggestion which involved popping round to see them with murderous intent, lol)

Tryingatleast · 02/11/2025 11:13

Ditto here, nervous doggy, fireworks don’t bother him

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/11/2025 11:17

None of our cats are really bothered either. Some animals are bulletproof, some less so.

Doggielovecharlotte · 02/11/2025 11:18

Is he a gun dog breed?

AbbeyGrange · 02/11/2025 11:23

Almost2026 · 01/11/2025 21:44

Mine sits in the window watching them. Completely unfazed. Now drive up the street or knock on the front door, completely different story!

We’ve got a little foster dog her this week, a stray from the kennels, she’s also unfazed by them thankfully. She’s quite nervous still so was worried how she would cope.

Yes mine too! The cat and the dog will watch fireworks from the window no problem, the bangs don't faze them nor does thunder and lightening, but bloody hell when the door keeps knocking on Halloween they jump out of their skin!
