AIBU to feel sad about cancelling pet insurance?

Our dog is 16 and 3 months old, I’ve been with Tesco for her and her dearly departed sister for years. We didn’t actually start claiming until last year for her and then for her sister’s kidney failure and subsequent PTS. I’ve claimed a few times for the dog we have now as she has had the occasional seizure episode. Blood tests showed she “may” have a brain tumour but as she is ok in herself for now we are not putting her through tests as what could they do anyway?

Anyway, we had notice that we are due to renew for her at the end of October so had notice that her monthly policy was doubling to £105 a month. That’s just not feasible because, really how much vet treatment is available at her age? we have just decided to put the £50 away each month.

I just feel sad about it.

Here she is on her birthday in June 😀

Please dont feel guilty. Your dog is over 16. You've given her a best life. I've been in your position 3 times. One dog lived to 18 and another to 16 and half. The premium is so high because of the high risk of claims. Putting £50 a month away is a good idea, spend savings on her foods, nice treats and things for her . No you arnt going to put her through unnecessary treatments or gruelling investigations. When the time comes and if she is seriously unwell you can do the decent thing and she'll painlessly slip away. We're fighting in the courts and withbthe government to let terminally ill people have that dignified end. Don't feel guilty, do the best for her and enjoy the time you have with hef now and forget the insurance!!!

Yeah it is. My arm especially. I see you’ve removed your post regarding treatment for a dried up unused old vag, did you get it sorted?

Sorry for your loss OP

Edited as read update

I agree it is sad. My 14 year old dog now only has the basic insurance mainly for the public liability aspect.

What a bizarre resurrection of my thread. Also wish people would read the updates.

I cancelled pet insurance for my cats when they got to a certain age fir this very reasonable.

However, in relation to my dog, I will approach it a slightly different way as I'd still want insurance to cover liability element for example should he cause injury or damage to someone else - which is something to consider from a legal pov. So I'll probably get the most basic cover in that regard when the time comes.

Sad to think about all of this.

Please report your thread to either update the title or have them remove it. I can’t imagine how painful this must be for you, having to see this again after you lost her.

we don’t have any insurance for our 16.5 year old dog either. I won’t be putting him through any kind of treatment at all if he needed it. He would be put to sleep rather than put him through surgery. It’s a privilege to have an elderly dog and you did right by Sophie
