AIBU to feel sad about cancelling pet insurance?

Our dog is 16 and 3 months old, I’ve been with Tesco for her and her dearly departed sister for years. We didn’t actually start claiming until last year for her and then for her sister’s kidney failure and subsequent PTS. I’ve claimed a few times for the dog we have now as she has had the occasional seizure episode. Blood tests showed she “may” have a brain tumour but as she is ok in herself for now we are not putting her through tests as what could they do anyway?

Anyway, we had notice that we are due to renew for her at the end of October so had notice that her monthly policy was doubling to £105 a month. That’s just not feasible because, really how much vet treatment is available at her age? we have just decided to put the £50 away each month.

I just feel sad about it.

Here she is on her birthday in June 😀

I would never have an uninsured pet. The simplest of treatment could costs thousands.

What an insensitive comment. Did you actually read the post?! 🙄

I’m so sorry OP. Many years ago, when we lost one of our dogs, every time I went to cancel the insurance I cried. So I left it. He’d been gone for nearly a year and I finally plucked up the courage to cancel the policy. I told them what had happened and why I was so late to cancel. The lady was so lovely, she gave us a full refund and we got flowers and a card. I’ve never forgotten that kindness.

It's a totally understandable decision OP. I hope she's comfortable after her seizure.

Thank you and also thank you to the other lovely posters in this thread. I see this ended up on mumsnet’s Facebook feed yesterday 🙄 with people replying, “That’s cheap, I pay blah blah”. Not the point.

I like to think I’m dealing with her seizures like a boss now. The first time I was almost hysterical and took her straight to the vet (close by) but yesterday I was on my own with her as DH had gone out and as it started I just held her gently til it passed. She then spends 5 minutes or so looking dazed and then she’s back in the room. 😃. She was eating and drinking happily last night. The last significant vet costs were after her first seizure in July and the blood tests showed that possible brain tumour we have chosen not to take investigations further with.

Again, thanks for the lovely comments on this thread. Sophie sends her love too. I’ve been calling her “poppet” for the last day as I haven’t heard that term in ages ❤️.

Does your policy cover pts and cremation because if so id keep it for that reason I cancelled mine last year and just had my 12 yo pts last week and its cost me £600 ( she was a large breed American bulldog though)

Beamur · 01/10/2025 09:09

I did exactly the same when my old dog got to the point I knew I would choose euthanasia over life prolonging treatment. It's a sad decision as you know where it leads, but it's sensible. It's not always in our pets interest to keep them going.

SeaAndStars · 01/10/2025 10:12

OP, I don't know if it helps, but our little dog had seizures during the last couple of years of her life too. Infrequent thankfully, but they were upsetting for us all when they happened. She recovered exactly as Sophie does, seemed none the worse afterwards and was up on her paws and merrily pottering on with her happy little days within minutes. I think they're worse for the owner because your pupper doesn't seem to know they're happening or remember them afterwards.

It sounds to me like you are doing exactly the right things for her.

Arran2024 · 01/10/2025 14:02

My vet's dog had epilepsy - i think it's not that uncommon. My daughter has epilepsy too and we panicked at first every time she had a seizure but then you get used to it.

YourNeedyLurker · 02/10/2025 14:19

I’m afraid I have a sad update.

I think the fact when I finished a late shift on Monday I was sat up in the early hours crying about the insurance not being renewed after the end of October was because I just “knew” something.

Same happened last year when I knew my other chihuahua had something really wrong with her and DH thought she was just getting old and doddery.

Long story short, Sophie had a very traumatic seizure at around 5:30pm yesterday. She was left with some paralysis and had obviously lost her sight. We took her to the emergency vet and she was put to sleep.

We are obviously devastated but so glad we were here for her.

Rest easy little furry camping buddy and our best friend. You were so loved. 💔

awww @YourNeedyLurker it is sometimes like we know isn't it?

Lots of very un-mumsnetty love to you and raise a glass to Sophie's wonderful life!

netflixfan · 02/10/2025 14:29

I didn’t insure my dog when she very old we couldn’t afford it. Not needed anyway cos she very quickly failed and had to be put to sleep. They’re so precious and beloved, hugs to you.

Wexone · 02/10/2025 14:29

Oh my word i am so sorry op. Sending you hugs ❤

I’m in the same position, I’m just paying for treatment as and when. Why can’t dogs live longer?!? 💔

tsmainsqueeze · 02/10/2025 19:45

Oh i am so sorry 😢

SyntheticFluff · 02/10/2025 23:51

Much love to you

Arran2024 · 03/10/2025 09:10

Just to say, we have been self funding vet treatment for one of our dogs. He had lymes disease and the premiums went sky high. We thought he didn't have long left but three years later he is still here!

Anyway, the cost of treatment tumbled once we stopped the insurance. The vet knows he isn't insured and is much more conservative in her treatment. We don't have regular blood tests or scans any more and he seems none the worse for it.

Empress13 · 03/10/2025 13:51

Totally understand OP tbh if anything were to happen then wouldn’t want to put her through surgery at that age. She is lovely and wow how amazing does she look for her age !

edited to say I have have just read your update I’m so sorry 💔 take care x
