I dont love my dog anymore but I dont want my mum to get rid of her

I have a 3 year old dachshund who used to be a perfect fit for me and I loved her to begin with. But over her time with me ive grown more annoyed with the things I once loved about her. She always has to be near me, she constantly licks if given the chance, and last year she had a slip disc. I had to pay 1k out of the money I just got for my 18th birthday for the surgery (slowly being paid back by parents). I dont know if ive changed and im not good with dogs anymore, if she's just too much for me, or if im somehow secretly waiting for her to get another slip disc because my mum isn't gonna put her through the operation again and will have her put down. Idk what to do because I feel so guilty, this dog adores me and on a good day I just tolerate her and on a bad day I dont want her near me but the last thing I wanna do is rehome her. I know this probably makes me a terrible person but I just need some advice on what I should do

You horrible excuse for a human.
Rehome this dog through the proper channels, not just an ad on social media.

Find someone who is going to adore this dog like they deserve and not wish harm on them so they can be put down.

Then take a long hard look at yourself and sort yourself out. And NEVER get an animal again.

Again, where does she say she's going to rehome the dog on social media? I can't see that anywhere

you're fighting the good fight, but I'm afraid you're not going to win against the lure some posters feel of making stuff up and then having a go at the OP about it. Heaven knows why people do it, but they clearly can't help themselves

Wegovy2026 · 27/09/2025 12:00

Finding the dog a new home is the right thing to do.

Denying this dog a fresh start and secretly wishing harm on them is duplicitous and psychopathic.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 27/09/2025 12:05

Dachshunds are known to be prone to back problems, so a slipped disc was probably on the cards anyway.

Dogs like company. Their humans are their special people in the world, and we all like to spend time with people that we love and like, don't we?

Licking can be a sign of affection, or that they're grooming you, or that they are seeking your attention. If you don't like it, you could look up and try ways to train her out of licking.

In all honesty, OP, you don't sound mature enough to have a dog in the first place (it's not a criticism, but some people take longer to mature). I'd strongly advise you to wait for several years before you think of taking on the responsibility for an another animal. Either leave her with your mum (if your mum is willing to take on responsibility for the dog), or rehome her. It's not your feelings about rehoming that matter; it's the dog's. You might feel guilty about it, but you might take comfort from the thought that she has been adopted by a person/family that love her, despite the back problems, lickings and the desire to constantly be in their company... or you'll have this dog for another 9+ years, and you might all be unhappy.

WFHforevermore · 27/09/2025 12:15

My god, what a horrible person you are.

JMSA · 27/09/2025 12:20

You sound far too immature to own a pet. Rehome her sensibly and don’t replace her with anything else.

GelatinousDynamo · 27/09/2025 12:29

Woompund · 27/09/2025 10:53

She said her parents are paying her back - I assume they didn't have the money available when it was needed and OP did.

Look, a 15 year old shouldn't have sole or main responsibility for a dog. You're 18, your mum is looking after it, it's her decision if it gets rehomed, it's her dog now surely? You need to take your part in caring for it by walking etc but I don't see why you are hand wringing so much. If your mum wants to rehome because she can't care for it then that's her decision, given that you can't take full responsibility for the dog. It's a bit shit, but getting a dog for a 15 year old is bloody stupid and that's on your parents, not you.

I got my first dog (coincidentally also a dachshund) when I was 8 years old and I behaved more responsibly than her. My parents paid for the vet and his food, but everything else was on me. She's an adult ffs, thought obviously very immature.
I'll admit that it's absolutely incomprehensible to me, how someone can just "fall out of love" with a dog because it's turned out to not be the perfect toy that you can just pick up and put back whenever. My first dog was 16 years old when he died and he was everything to me, always at my side through my journey into adulthood. He shaped me just as much as I shaped him. It's awful to read that someone can just dispose of an animal that was meant to be their companion through this part of their lives.

It's heartbreaking, because this dog is pretty impossible to re-home. A slipped disc at 3 is a sentence, no one will want to adopt her, I suspect that even breed specific rescues will struggle.

JennieTheZebra · 27/09/2025 11:50

Can we please remember that the OP is closer to a frightened child than a responsible adult. The dog isn’t even hers to re home-it’s her mother’s.

Frightened child my arse. She's bored with the toy now and wants to dump it before it costs her any more money or inconvenience.

Pricelessadvice · 27/09/2025 13:16

Woompund · 27/09/2025 11:54

She doesn’t, but let’s face it, that’s where most unwanted animals end up being advertised.

JennieTheZebra · 27/09/2025 14:10

@neilyoungismyheroumm OP, as far as we know, is 18 and still lives at home. This isn’t her dog and it’s barely even her money. This is why you shouldn’t buy children animals unless you want them yourself.

CalzoneOnLegs · 27/09/2025 14:10

@neilyoungismyhero yep !

SeaAndStars · 27/09/2025 14:25

OP, there will be people out there like me just waiting for the right dog to come into a rescue. Give her up now and let her settle happily somewhere else where someone will have the time and money to care for as she deserves and who will adore her every day.

Dachshunds can live 16 years. You won't want her that long and she deserves a loving home for those years.

user1469569516 · 27/09/2025 14:33

You are the centre of this dog's world and yet you are here hoping that she becomes so ill that your parents will choose to euthanise, rather than pay for medical care.
What a nasty person you are.

DreamOfTheRarebitFiend · 27/09/2025 14:54

Why don't you want to rehome her, OP? Someone else would adore her and give her a lovely home. It sounds like maybe you don't want to admit to your parents that it's not working out?

Constant licking can be a sign of anxiety or stress. How much exercise and mental stimulation does she get? How much training have you done? Dachshunds are highly intelligent little dogs, and putting more time into training and building a bond with her could turn the whole situation around.

If these are really your feelings, though, then I think you need to do the right thing for your dog and call the dachshund rescue place a pp linked to.

Sportsdaywinner · 27/09/2025 15:05

Praying this isn't real.
Wishing the poor animal another slipped disc is beyond vile and evil.
Jesus

GreyTS · 27/09/2025 11:07

Seriously go read the OP again, it is disturbing, I have 2 teenage daughters who feed and walk the family dogs almost daily, if either of them expressed opinions like this about an innocent animal I would be so ashamed

This

We have a family dog. If either of my teenagers spoke about our dog, who depends on us, loves us, and didnt choose to be a member of our family, I would be so angry and disappointed with how awful they were .

Op, I feel so sorry for your dog. I really hope you and she live with your parents and the poor thing doesn't live with you alone.

If it is just you and her, I never normally say this, but I think you should re-home so she can have the chance to live with someone who loves and wants her and isn't just keeping her because they have her.

LargeChestofDrawers · 27/09/2025 15:16

You are too young both in body and mind, to own a dog, and to be honest, if your parents have to use your birthday money for vets bills, then as a family, you can't afford a dog either.

Contact a dachshund rehoming centre and don't get another dog.

ChristmasTreasure · 27/09/2025 15:23

GreyTS · 27/09/2025 10:45

Look I hope this is not real or it’s some kind of weird reverse because no one would reveal themselves to be such a disgusting excuse for a human as you have done here. If by any chance this dog actually exists then contact a rescue and let them know of your plan to give away this innocent dog to a random on social media. And if this is a parent posting about their child’s dog then you have done something very wrong to raise such a cold unfeeling selfish shit of an 18 year old

I don’t get what OP said that is so bad to warrant this response. She’s 18. It’s an animal, not a child. And she’s even expressed that she feels guilty, I mean seriously.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 27/09/2025 15:26

I am guessing you are the mother who has seen your brat get a dog like its a dolly and now has gotten bored because its not all selfies and cuddles.

The dog needs rehoming, but through a breed specific rescue which will rehome into houses that have experience with that type of dog.

There are too many dachshunds around - people get them because they think they are little and cute, but they are bred to be working dogs so need a lot of mental and physical stimulation. And they do have many health issues.

Dogs dont think like humans - it will not be devestated to be rehomed, especially if dont properly. The best thing to do is rehome asap.

She hopes a living, sentient animal, that depends on her, loves her and didn't choose the life it has, gets another painful back condition that would end up with it being put to sleep...thats a vile thing to say, even if she is 18.

I broadly agree with you, apart from the sentiment behind your third sentence (I would hope that anyone with an animal in their care would have enormous empathy towards it).

But guys, come on. I'm passionate about animals, but OP is basically still a kid, and sounds overwhelmed and completely out of her depth. Telling her she's a vile human being is not going to help the situation.

AllrightNowBaby · 27/09/2025 15:56

Op please take this dog to a rescue where she can find a new owner who wants her and will love her like she deserves.
You and your parents made a mistake getting the dog, so put it right now.

WonderingWanda · 27/09/2025 16:00

I really don't mean this in a nasty way but you don't sound ready to be a pet owner and all the responsibilities it entails. You are resenting your dog through no fault of her own because you don't want the responsibility. You need to find her a caring and loving home for her sake.

Accept that is how you geel and stop thinking of your own guilt how bad you'd feel if you remove her, how you don't want to be that person etc (which is what's really going on here) and do what is in the best interests of the dog.

InsectsMatter · 27/09/2025 16:07

I’d only rehome through a rescue that wasn’t run by control-freaky managers who have arcane rehoming requirements.

Please give your poor little dog some cuddles even if you can’t be bothered OP. It will cost you so little but mean the world to her.

Rescue kennels are dreadful places often run by control freaks with arcane stipulations about who can adopt.
Not all but too many.
Hopefully poor little dog can stay in situ while a home is found.
