A September evening some bastard let of a load of fireworks in the park where me and a couple of other people were walking our dogs.
My dog ran off but I didn't see where she went we searched as much of the park as we could as quick as we could but couldn't find her.
I ran home to see if she was there , nope , my DB got in his car to search the roads while I went back to the park .
My DB found her running down a local busy road , amazingly she recognised the sound of the cars engine and jumped through the drivers window.
My DB then drove into the park flashing his headlights .
I have never been so relieved and thankful.

Out looking for DDog who wears her equafleece in the house 6 months of the year in -4 degrees for 5 hours from 2am in the morning. Thick frost everywhere, thought I was searching for a corpse.

Titasaducksarse · 09/09/2025 19:49

When my little guy went off his food, started eating then was sick. He then stopped eating. No diarrhea or other symptoms other than increased lethargy.

Took him to the vets who found his kidneys were failing...suspected poison/toxin. He was really ill and could have died.

I was so shocked that his symptoms weren't that bad but how ill he was.

Any time now he doesn't want to eat I get instantly anxious.

At the beach, two labs are swimming for balls. Someone goes past on the upper level promenade , eating a bacon roll. Male dog took off looking for person with bacon.

Luckily stopped, inches from the road, clearly realising the scent had gone.

Came back to me. Was clipped to a long line. Carried on swimming. Bloody Labradors and their food gene.

LadybirdDaphne · 09/09/2025 19:55

CKC who feels like he must be polite and greet everyone of whatever species… He’s off lead and the beach has a sharp bend where the creek runs into the sea, so you can’t see round the corner. Just round the bend is a sealion who he tries to run up to and sniff the arse of. Never have I run forward to grab him so fast! (I don’t live in the UK.)

Boxingshibes · 09/09/2025 20:11

I have 2 stories
First when I was about 15 my labrador jumped/ fell off a walkway in the harbour where we were living. Luckily a boat was there and one of the fisherman actually caught him.
Secondly one of our Shiba's got off the lead when he was about a year old and took off. Dh chased after him along the cliff top. Annoyingly he was only about 10m in front and only stopped after 3 miles when a cliff appeared.
Shiba and offlead don't mix!

Heading out the door with my first dog, a puppy, but forgot something.

QUICKLY HOOKED HER LEAD TO THE DOOR HANDLE LIKE A GOD DAMN IDIOT and turned to get whatever it was I forgot.

She did not stay still. of course not. She was a puppy. Puppies don't stay still you moron. She went out the door, dragging the door behind her. There's a step down from the front door....

She didn't hang herself thank f*ck as I was still using harnesses at the time, but her back foot got trapped under the door that was closing behind her, the rest of her continued down the step and she screamed... omg did she scream.

She refused to stand on it for a good 10-15 mins. I was so new to dogs I took that weird holding leg out when it's hurt thing to mean it had come out the socket or something. I phoned the emergency vet crying my eyes out saying I had broken my puppy's leg.

Of course she was running around the waiting room when we got there.

I consider the £400 emergency consultation fee the tax for my stupidity tbh.

In the first year of having our rescue dog when we didn’t know him well enough to avoid this

He has a terrible phobia of motorbikes. He saw one in a traffic queue as we were waiting at the traffic lights to cross a busy main road. He went absolutely fruitloop bouncing and lunging and managed to slip both his harness and collar and escape. He ran into the road just as the lights changed and the traffic started to move. I was completely sure he would be run over but somehow he wasn’t and we eventually managed to get him back. It was really dangerous and also embarrassing with lots of people shouting at us as though that would help.

I immediately got him a better harness and collar that he can’t get out of and no longer walk him anywhere near busy roads.

Lnnhfdf · 09/09/2025 20:21

When he was a puppy and ate an entire box of chocolates when I had gone out. I was usually careful about not leaving chocolate out but was in a rush to get to an appointment and forgot. Came home to a shredded box. I had to rush him to the vet so he could be made to vomit it back out.

LeaAndDer · 09/09/2025 20:22

When she had a stroke! Scary as hell.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 09/09/2025 20:26

A delivery driver left the gate open and I didn't know, so let her out for a play. She saw cars on the road and ran to them - she's deaf so I couldn't call her back- I was running to get her but my legs were so wobbly with terror I could hardly stand up. Absolutely awful. I couldn't see around the corner of the (very long) drive through the trees and thought I was going to find her dead.

She was just sitting there watching the cars go past and looked at me like I'd gone mad.

AwkwardPaws27 · 09/09/2025 20:28

Immune mediated polyarthitis at 9 months old, took him another 9 months (& £9,000...) to recover. He had a terrible relapse partway through where he was admitted for IV morphine as it was the only way to control his pain, & we were considering PTS if he didn't respond quickly.
Thankfully he fully recovered and is now almost 5, & an absolute pain in the arse half of the time, & my pride & joy the other half Grin

MeridaBrave · 09/09/2025 20:29

Too many.

Ate chocolate many times, including a sealed parcel delivered by post to DH. Been at vet many times for this.

Bolted accross road when DH opened door, almost got run over.

SeaAndStars · 09/09/2025 20:31

Not my dog, but I was out walking with her when we saw a staffy running across a field like the wind, the gate must have been open and he ran out of the field across the road and right under a truck. Heart in my mouth I started to run towards it only to see the staffy run straight out the other side without a scratch and narrowly dodge a car coming the other way. The car driver and I managed to catch him (gorgeous wriggly and no idea of how lucky he was to be alive. We rang his owner who came to collect him.

I still cringe when I think of it now.

Frenchfemme · 09/09/2025 20:40

The first time my dog had a seizure. Early morning, both he and me just waking up. Started by sort of staggering backwards and I first thought he had broken his back. Very scary. He went on to have 4-5 seizures a day for 3 days, then none for a few weeks, then start again, for about 3 years. I never really got used to it, but never as shocking as that first time.

superbakedpotato · 09/09/2025 20:41

As a puppy he escaped. I let him into the garden for his morning wee, which we thought was secure, but he managed to squeeze between the bars of the locked side gate. Cue me screaming and running through the front door and down the street, dressing gown agape and flapping in the breeze, as puppy toddles off without a care in the world towards the main road, which is now busy with work traffic. Luckily he got distracted by one of the neighbours who was outside scraping the ice off their car and went to say hello, giving me chance to grab him. Chicken wire was attached to the gate promptly after the incident 😅

StiffAsAVicar · 09/09/2025 20:44

We discovered our dog had epilepsy when he had his first seizure in the middle of a busy main road while we were crossing. He was a huge dog, no way to carry him. Luckily, a very kind man in a van pulled over and carried him to safety for us. Very scary time.

Belladog1 · 09/09/2025 20:45

My dog was bitten on the face by an adder and nearly died.

He was off lead in the field behind our house, was sniffing in the long grass and squealed. Ran to him and you could see the two holes where the snake had bitten him, right by his eye.

His entire face swelled up like a balloon, shaking, shivering. It was awful. Typically it was a Sunday so had to race him to the emergency vets. He was in there for 5 days ..... but he made a total recovery

Iwantsandybeachesandgoodfood · 09/09/2025 20:47

Twice my dog has scared the shit out of me.
Once when I saw him covered in red stuff; I obviously assumed bloody until wiping it and noticing the red candle on its side. Then I cried while simultaneously telling him off, apologising and trying to figure out how he got so high up (he’s a JR).
The second time was one of the worst times of my life. He got attacked by a dog ten times his size. DH fought it off until the stupid, irresponsible owner appeared. His injuries took months to heal.

My 3 year old cockapoo got a stick stuck in his mouth recently - lengthways. It was terrifying and he was so scared 🥹 luckily my cousin was a 2 minute drive away and managed to retrieve it.

this happened to me (or rather, my dog) this week! She wouldn't let me get a decent grip on it either. It's the way they just accept their fate like "ok I guess this is my mouth now" 😂

OfAllThePlaces · 09/09/2025 21:06

Stalked by a seal on a walk along the beach. He's a tiny chunky chihuahua so must have looked like easy prey. The seal kept bobbing his head up from the water, getting closer and closer. There are cliffs along the beach, so no quick exit. Trying to walk quickly on dry sand is very hard.

Same chihuahua, he thinks everyone and every thing loves him. We were walking along a pond, he went to say hello to a swan before I could stop him, and he fell into the water amongst the swans and ducks. Luckily they swam away, no cygnets or ducklings to protect.

24Dogcuddler · 09/09/2025 21:14

When he was only about 5 or 6 months old our Cocker Spaniel jumped into a swollen river
( frequently walked in the area and hadn’t gone in before.)
His ears were floating in the water spinning him around as he was carried by the current. My DH jumped in with his phone in his pocket and wellies on. Lifted our pup up to a friend then managed to get out himself.
I insisted that he take our little darling to the vets, in case of secondary drowning. They checked him over and said to watch for infection. Didn’t even ask if DH was OK I was so worried. Luckily he was.
Been a few other eating things he shouldn’t emergencies out and about. Now muzzled when out for his safety.

ToodlesOodles · 09/09/2025 21:17

Adder bite on the neck. Adder was right on the path in woodland. Four nights in intensive care.

Anotherplant · 09/09/2025 21:19

I’ve dragged mine out of the canal a few times. He’s only learnt that I will rescue him, which isn’t helpful!
