Long haired sausage dog

We are in the process of rescuing a long haired dachshund. She is gorgeous. 3 years old. Does anyone own one and have any advice or tips. Our previous dog was a JRT. I am super excited. We fostered her for a week and she fit right in with our family.

Get very good insurance in case of IVDD.

itbemay1 · 28/07/2025 19:56

@AwkwardPaws27thats on my list!

People always seem to pick up small dogs - warn people that dachshunds have very delicate backs and they are absolutely not to pick up your dog!

itbemay1 · 28/07/2025 20:19

She’s had a rough start in life so I will be protecting her in all ways without a doubt but thanks for the heads up. Just getting her booked into the vets for a once over and will have a chat with them. Want to get her animal health certificate anyway so we can travel with her as we do a lot of European drives.

My DD has got a 6 month old pup. His coat is amazing already, quite wavy and he's got a very long tail. She's got a few sets of foam steps for him (he likes to get on the sofa and the bed), and she's put stair gates top and bottom of the stairs. He's a real character, quite vocal and very affectionate.

If you’re on Facebook join the UK miniature dachshunds group. Lots of good advice and even more cute pics!

I have no words of advice but ohhh I would love a long haired doxie! ❤️ If you are on TikTok there's a gorgeous pair of sisters called Digit and Pip, and their owner posts regularly. All the luck and love in the world with your new family member 😘 xx

We have one, long haired. Ours is a character, very cheeky. His wee ears are so cute when they get wet they get a wave in them.
Careful with insurance, a lot of them don't cover them because of the risk to their backs or exclude it from policies
Ours is just as energetic as our jack russel was but we don't walk him for as long although he's walk for days
Also very very yappy
Happy days, 🥰

Remagirl19 · 28/07/2025 21:27

can have a high prey drive. Be sure of recall x

MaxandMeg · 28/07/2025 21:33

I've had two. No issues except DS's German exchange picked one up by his front legs and swung him round, and he did hurt his back. Also didn't do much for international relations. Dog had to be immobilised in a playpen but made a good recovery.Mine were genetic brothers but not litter brothers and they made me smile a dozen times a day. Hilarious little dogs. They both lived until 18 with no major health problems other than the one mentioned above. However, they were quite short-backed for dachs.

GelatinousDynamo · 28/07/2025 22:15

Their coat needs grooming (much more often than you are used to with your JRT), but it's manageable at home. She will need to be brushed at least twice a week, especially at the hind legs and belly, because they tend to pick up everything with their coats and then it mats. If she's a rescue then she might be not be used to being handled and groomed, but it can be trained (slowly and with lots of patience - try giving her some yoghurt to lick at first).

Also, get her one of those feeding bowls that are narrower at the top so that her ears won't drag and get infected. The ears also require regular cleaning.

A lot has been written about their backs, so I'll just add that weight management is very important for them to remain healthy! Always look at your dog from above, she should have a defined waistline. If she doesn't, she's overweight. If her stomach is in line with her rib cage when you look at her from the side, she's morbidly obese. Most dogs you see on the streets are overweight, but it really is especially bad for dachshunds.

itbemay1 · 29/07/2025 09:55

These are great thank you. I am so excited. She’s such a sweetie. Sounds like she has been passed around a bit so I want to give her some stability and do things right. I have booked a vets appointment for a review and will check if she is chipped. She’s a girl who has already had puppies so I want to get her neutered I think this is the right thing to do but will chat to the vet. Luckily DSs girlfriend is a dog groomer so will make sure she is groomed regularly and also I can brush her twice a week no problem. I’ll have a look on Facebook too and tik tok! I’ve ordered a spaniel bowl to stop the ears getting too wet! Just looking at insurance, pet plan seem the most comprehensive so far. Can’t wait!

You could incorporate hill walking to keep the muscles in her lower back strong. That will help with the IVDD risk.

Pointyhound · 30/07/2025 01:20

Personally I'd get the insurance sorted as there's usually a 14day exclusion period to avoid claims for pre-existing conditions and then book to vet after this for the check up/chat if there's nothing urgently needs treating.

Pointyhound · 30/07/2025 01:46

You want a lifetime policy so any conditions are covered for lifetime rather than excluded on renewal with the 12month type. Go for as high vet bills cover as can afford as spinal surgery along with the lengthy hydro/physio rehab is very expensive and the chances of it becoming a reality with this breed are heartbreakingly high.

Pet plan is more expensive but is a safe bet as it's long established with vets & specialists usually happy to direct claim as they settle quickly so your only expected to pay the excess rather than in full and wait for the insurers to pay you.

Unlike many insurers an individuals claims don't affect their premiums it's spread over a group, therefore you can claim for everything without the fear of it costing you way more than the vet bill in the long run. Some will also give a sillh £££ premium on renewal if the dog has high claims or has reached old age as they don't want the risk, but by this stage it's harder to switch insurers as anything your dog has seen the vet for maybe excluded as a pre-existing condition or are too old for lifetime cover. Many people then feel forced to cancel and are uninsured when they need the cover the most.

This is my granddog.. he's a miniature long haired Merle...
My DD is a vet nurse and very hot on keeping his weight down..
He's very agile and although she had sofa/bed steps he ignores those...
She has very good insurance..

Get ear plugs I've never known such a noisy breed ever, they love the sound of their own voices our neighbour had 2 and they drove me absolutely NUTS and breeder friends promptly rehomed theirs due to the racket they made constantly

Dachshunds LOVE to burrow, they naturally seek out confined, den-like spaces for comfort and security. Definitely get her a few blankets for her bed so she can make herself a cozy den. They also usually prefer to sleep in your bed under the covers, to the point when I would sometimes wonder how they are able to breathe in there. We had one rule in my house when I had them: don't sit on a lumpy blanket, there was a solid 75% chance they’d contain at least one dachshund.

My first boy would expect me to lift the covers to let him donut up perfectly under them. The other one would rather sleep on top, but he would grab a blanket in his teeth and go in circles to make himself a perfect nest. Both of them preferred to be smushed though. Their favorite thing was to be wedged between things: usually my leg or back and the couch, but anything they could barely fit into was their favorite.
