Puppy recommendations for someone that DID want a dachshund please

I’ve always wanted a dog, I had them as a child and as my mother was a monster they were my best friends.
We’ve got four children who also want a dog but my husband dislikes dogs and animals in general so Im looking for a dog small enough that I can carry around the house out of his way, and on the school run,, and doesn’t shed. (Well, isn’t fluffy at least) my 7 year old daughter really wanted a dachshund because we saw one at the school which was adorable and my husband agreed to that but then I searched it on here and saw they have back problems.
(although that may have been miniatures) one post said the vet bill was 12k for an op and that they are in pain.
i don’t work and don’t have any other pets, we have a detached house so our neighbours wouldn’t complain.
i DONT want a pug or anything similar to that. Or a chihuahua or a shitzu (sorry i don’t can’t spell that, but that’s how it sounds)
If it was my choice I’d get a lab or a border collie. Like I had as a child - they were so intelligent and loyal. But my children and husband have vetoed a big dog.
Are there any breeds which fit that criteria?
Thanks for reading

Border Terrier might be worth a look.

LandSharksAnonymous · 13/07/2025 13:46

Border Terrier or Mini Poodle. Both are intelligent and loyal and tbh lovely little dogs. Poodles need more maintenance and monthly trips to the groomers though.

Good on you for changing your mind about a Dachshund. They do have a significant number of health issues that can be incredibly expensive.

AcquadiP · 13/07/2025 13:49

Another vote for Border Terrier, they're lovely dogs.

HappiestSleeping · 13/07/2025 13:51

Definitely a good idea to swerve dachshunds. Many people get them as they look sweet, but they are often a handful. They are designed to hunt badgers after all.

I would also go border terrier or miniature poodle, and would add Norfolk terrier to the list.

isthesolution · 13/07/2025 14:04

Bichon frise here. Gorgeous family dog. Loves walks and cuddles and playing with a ball but also is small enough to be picked up and a major plus for us was that he doesn’t shed at all ever and doesn’t affect allergies.

hes also intelligent - easy to train, teach tricks, etc

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/07/2025 14:34

Why not Chihuahuas? Im on my second and they are amazing little dogs. Its not practical or fair on the dog to carry it around out of your husbands way though. He either needs to be on board or don't get one.

Ylvamoon · 13/07/2025 14:39

If you like the look of a black & tan smooth coat dachshund how about a Lancaster Heeler or Manchester Terrier?

Both are on the vulnerable native breed list so getting a puppy won't be straight forward. But you'll get more dog than with companion or fashionable breeds.

24Dogcuddler · 13/07/2025 14:45

Westie or miniature Schnauzer?
I believe Border Terriers have a high prey drive and like to dig ( gardens and furniture)
Dog will probably stay out of his way if DH is grumpy! Or maybe he will fall in love with it.
Just do your research on the Kennel Club etc and plan in socialisation and training.

AelinAG · 13/07/2025 14:53

yorkshire terrier? Mines goes everywhere with me that it’s reasonable for a dog to go, doesn’t shed and is quite intelligent.

What do you mean carry around the house out your husbands way? You will have to let the dog roam free in the house

Bruisername · 13/07/2025 14:55

Mini schnauzer - calm, don’t shed and easy to train. They can be yappy but mine aren’t.

mine have converted two previously die hard dog haters

Shenmen · 13/07/2025 15:01

A bit like children I really think you shouldn't have one unless both adults are onboard. What if you get ill, go away, have to look after your parents, it's not fair on your DH or the dog.
Can you do borrow my dog and see if you can win him over first.
Well done for not getting a dachshund poor dogs and very hard to train.

somewhereintheworld · 13/07/2025 15:03

I've had two Border terriers and they're lovely little dogs. They hardly shed at all and they're quite hardy dogs. So no expensive trips to the vet's. I bet your DH will come to love the dog whatever breed you get.

My brother has a miniature Schnauzer. His is funny, a huge character for a relatively small dog - I'd say the only drawback is the cost of grooming to get that ludicrous, beard and eyebrows look!

spiderlight · 13/07/2025 15:15

Border terrier!

NewDogOwner · 13/07/2025 16:04

Lots of small dogs are very vocal; you can't just keep a dog out of the way of someone who lives in the same house.

Bruisername · 13/07/2025 16:05

Agree it’s not fair on either the dog or the husband

so for eg you are watching tv in the evening with your DH - does the dog have to stay in another room alone?

BCBird · 13/07/2025 16:09

No breed is suitable if your husband not on board. My friend had a Bichon- lovely breed.

romdowa · 13/07/2025 16:34

If you don't want a dog that sheds then I definitely wouldn't get a lab. They've a double coat and they shed like crazy

I have to agree re mini schnauzer ...although I have a Maltipoo myself, mix of Maltese and Toy poodle. Lovely dogs, no shedding, fur is so soft like hair and needs regular grooming appts. Very lovely demeanour and so funny 🥰

2024onwardsandup · 13/07/2025 17:08

Bichon

krustykittens · 14/07/2025 23:33

I would go for a Havanese. They hardly shed and they just adore people. If mine is typical of the breed, they will just pour love into you. Plenty of energy to keep up with kids but still love to snuggle on the sofa with parents in front of the TV at night. Pretty faces and you can easily learn to groom them off youtube videos.

tinyspiny · 14/07/2025 23:36

If your husband doesn’t want a dog then you shouldn’t be getting one .

Totally agree mini schnauzers are amazing. I've never sent mine to a groomer I've just invested in some clippers and scissors for the brows and beard and googled some images to get an idea on the style of the well groomed dog.

LadyInRainbow · 15/07/2025 00:43

I was glad that some people eventually said no dog, you can’t get a dog and keep it out the way of someone in the house! Will you never have a day out with friends? Take in turns to sit with dog one evening and husband the next? Just no!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 15/07/2025 07:16

If your husband dislikes dogs then you don’t get a dog.
