Summer 25 pups

Any other new puppy owners around this summer? Have been looking back at some of the old puppy support threads and can see how helpful it was for those posters to share their experiences.

9 week old mini schnauzer here - so toilet training and avoiding those needle sharp teeth are the current main activities here!

(And being tolerant of her determination to rid my garden of lavender plants. Hence my user name 😂)

Aww lovely. I remember the first day Billy came home we couldn’t figure out how to get him to go on his bed so I lay down on it to demonstrate and he climbed on my back and finally went to sleep 🥰.

I’m sorry for all the Billy stories, I’ll have Rory ones to share on Sunday!

Couldn’t resist sharing 🥰🥰🥰

@MrsKJonesShe’s absolutely gorgeous. I loved those early day naps when I would just sit staring at SoupDog being so cute it was overwhelming.

MrsKJones · 26/07/2025 06:06

@Idratherbepaddleboarding beautiful pic

Good first night here. K went in her crate at 9.30 and slept in it until 5.30. She woke a couple of times but no crying and just adjustment of her blanket & stuffed dog.

Been out 3 times this morning for toilet and after some play & lots of belly rubs she is now settling for breakfast.

Think shes just about mastered letting me know when she needs to goes out, she sits in front of lounge door and whines.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 26/07/2025 12:54

Less than 24 hours to go now 😁.

VanGoSunflowers · 26/07/2025 20:02

@Idratherbepaddleboarding beautiful pic ❤️ and you must be so excited for tomorrow!!

@MrsKJones sounds like you have a star pup on your hands there 😍

MrsKJones · 26/07/2025 20:06

@Idratherbepaddleboarding I bet these 24 hours are d.r.a.g.g.i.n.g...!

@VanGoSunflowers I do. Im so lucky. We've had a really good day today; naps in the crate, out to toilet, belly rubs, play and meals. Fingers crossed for a good night tonight

She is such a timewaster. But in the best way.

Oh goodness I think I'm in love 🥰 😍❤️

She's HERE!

Two wees outside, a nap and shes now tackling her lunch out of her puzzle bowl

Too many adorable little things! ❤️

MrsKJones · 27/07/2025 06:46

Guess who got a little cocky and ahead of herself??

Rough night in the Jones household. K was up to toilet at 3am and following an attack of the zoomies then took forever to settle, refusing to stay in her crate.

Furry menace

VanGoSunflowers · 27/07/2025 09:42

@MrsKJones I sometimes think they like to lure us in to a false sense of security 😂🤦‍♀️

VanGoSunflowers · 27/07/2025 09:47

So I noticed yesterday that there were worms in Pablo’s poo… he’s had two lots of worming treatment in his short life - one when he was with the breeder and another at the same time he had his jabs which was a month ago.

I called the vet and they said it’s fine, he’s still covered for another two months and that’s a sign that the worming treatment works?! I didn’t question it obviously but then this morning he has been sick which is totally unlike him. He seems absolutely fine in himself, totally normal and this morning’s poo was normal as well. Is it a wait and see? He’s drinking ok and all that!

widewomanofthevillage · 27/07/2025 11:27

Live or dead worms? I'm guessing if they were dead the treatment is working to end the lifecycle but it really is a guess on my part. And now I'm going to make a point of looking more before scooping while fighting my gag reflex!

VanGoSunflowers · 27/07/2025 15:34

They were definitely dead. I don’t know how the worming treatment works but he had it as a preventative measure, shouldn’t it kill them before they hatch or something??

He also just wolfed down another dog’s poo and promptly threw it up, whole, on my kitchen floor. To say I felt queasy cleaning that up is an understatement. And him trying to lick my face afterwards wasn’t helping. He’s not a sicky dog usually!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 27/07/2025 15:59

Rory’s home! He’s been a dream so far 🤞🤞 he was sooo good on the car ride home even though it was an hour due to traffic. He did some exploring and found his favourite toy (this giraffe). He’s had a wee and poo in the garden and is now flat out napping. I’m sure it won’t always be this easy 😂.

On a completely different topic, is anyone else really struggling to get MN to load at them moment?

Paws4thought25 · 27/07/2025 16:04

SOS!
So we’re finally at the post vax stage where we can start going on proper walks and pup is now totally refusing to do any walking if any kind outside the house. 🤦🏻
He sits and will just not move.
Tried a cheery ‘let’s go’ and rewarded when he does some steps but we’re talking a lot of rewarding for a few metres of actual movement.
All previous dogs just ‘walked’ and I’ve never had to coax.

Any ideas?? Is it bribery until he decides to do it himself?

LandSharksAnonymous · 27/07/2025 16:06

@Paws4thought25 did you socialise (take out in your arms etc) pre-vaccination? If so, was there anything your puppy showed nerves about? Are you walking directly out of the house onto a busy road etc?

Sorry, lots of questions! Just trying to figure out how best to advise!

thanks @LandSharksAnonymous

He’s been out and about every day in one form or another. Picked up at 9 weeks and now he’s 12.

Generally quite a confident pup. Runs about in garden. Will run around flat with leaf and harness on.

We live in a flat so have a communal garden so has been on a harness and lead for his toileting pretty much since we got him three weeks ago.

Has walked about the communal garden on a lead but suddenly stopped a few days ago.

He stops and sits and looks at me. Doesn’t ‘shake’ or seem scared. Could be that he just prefers the harness and being carried around 🤦🏻

LandSharksAnonymous · 27/07/2025 16:25

@Paws4thought25 So definitely not fear then (at least not obviously)!

I'd recommend trying him somewhere a bit new (can you drive somewhere and take him out for a walk there?) to see if that changes how he reacts. If you can't do that, then just treats and positive reassurance (but without making a big thing of it).

He'll get the hang of it sooner or later. He's still young and if he's not showing obvious fear & he's happy to run about in the flat (therefore he's not in pain or injured in some way) I wouldn't worry too much 😊

Paws4thought25 · 27/07/2025 16:42

Thanks @LandSharksAnonymous

Definitely not in pain - apart from the terrible teething!

That’s a good idea. He’s fine in car so will find somewhere new and try to give him a nice time 😂

He’s met my friend’s dog so was wondering whether to join them for a walk as I’m sure he’d follow her too - do you think that might be too much for him?

Oh, that's definitely the grossest thing I've heard a cute puppy do, well done coping with that! And I thought I had it bad trying to bathe gammy drain leakage from inside a cone!

I can only think that having dead adult worms means they can't lay eggs and as long as they're being killed at some point of the lifecycle it should all clear out and stop the episode? I should look up what Buddy has been prescribed really, I just grabbed the subscription option from the vet and called it done!

VanGoSunflowers · 27/07/2025 16:48

@Idratherbepaddleboarding what a cutie!! Not struggling to load MN here, no. Hope you have a good nights sleep!

@widewomanofthevillage It did turn my stomach I have to say! Hopefully you’re right, the vet said just to keep an eye on him but that’s twice he has been sick today and it’s not like him! As I say, he’s fine in himself and the second episode was hopefully down to him eating what he ate 🤢

LandSharksAnonymous · 27/07/2025 16:57

@Paws4thought25 if they got on, then it might work well! There's no harm in trying - particularly if your friends dog is older and happy to be around a puppy😊I'll keep my fingers crossed tomorrow's walks are better
