Summer 25 pups

Lavenderdog · 07/07/2025 17:20

Any other new puppy owners around this summer? Have been looking back at some of the old puppy support threads and can see how helpful it was for those posters to share their experiences.

9 week old mini schnauzer here - so toilet training and avoiding those needle sharp teeth are the current main activities here!

(And being tolerant of her determination to rid my garden of lavender plants. Hence my user name 😂)

@scoobiedoozie my boy loves the Millie’s Wolfheart training treats. They are small and nice and dry so you don’t get gross fingers when you’re dishing them out. The sticks of pate you can buy in pet shops are good too - you can chop them up into little pieces and they also freeze well. Vinny would also do anything for a lick of primula squeezy cheese when he was a pup too 😄

@VanGoSunflowers she sounds way better. I think it’s really important to find someone you click with and have the same way of thinking/approach to how you’d like to treat your dog.

SpanielsGalore · 22/07/2025 17:28

@VanGoSunflowers She sounds much more promising. I hope it goes well.

@scoobiedoozie I mainly make my own tuna or liver bread. They also get any left over meat from our dinners. They're not lucky enough to get a whole joint to themselves.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 22/07/2025 17:44

Did you get the MW training treats in a puppy pack @YorkshireFelix ? I posted a link to it earlier because Brie absolutely loves them, and we're on our second batch! I hate anything messy too, because I'm a veggie, so they really suit us.

YorkshireFelix · 22/07/2025 18:06

@CoubousAndTourmalet yes I think we got the starter pack when we first tried the kibble out and carried on buying them! I am very lucky to live 10 mins from the warehouse so can go to the shop and have a browse. Vinny loves the porky string chews too (not as veggie friendly unfortunately!). The training treats from Field and Fireside are very similar but way more stinky which Vinny LOVES, but I try and limit those as they are quite a bit pricier.

scoobiedoozie · 22/07/2025 21:27

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

PuppyVsCar · 22/07/2025 22:23

Currently catching up with this thread whilst waiting for pup to settle down for the night. I'm never quite sure what to when what looked like an early bedtime turns out to have been a late nap and then by his reckoning he needs to be up and about again 🥴

So sorry for your loss @Idratherbepaddleboarding, awful to think of losing a dog so young. My boy is a Lab(ish) and he's just the best. I'm a convert to lifelong Labrador ownership, I think.

MrsKJones · 23/07/2025 21:01

I got the peanut butter from Aldi, thank you for that tip.

In other news; 2 more sleeps to go!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 23/07/2025 21:26

@MrsKJones Billy hated peanut butter, I remember making him up a liki mat (which reminds me I need to get one for Rory) and he licked all round the peanut butter 😂.

We always used (and will continue to use) human food for training treats: cheese, meat, left over sausages etc. Oh! And he loved Primula squeezy cheese. That’s good for training lead walking as you can hold it near them and squeeze a little out every so often.

I’ve been to Pets at Home today to buy a bed, new bowls, a collar and lead and some toys for Rory. 4 days to go for us!

Ooh I've been advised about primula. Love anything in a tube

Our Brie is a snob, she declined Primula tubes, will only eat proper cheese 😆

soupmaker · 23/07/2025 21:36

I’m going to try primula for the loose lead walking. That’s genius. SoupDog loves cheese and smoked sausage, in fact any sort of sausage.

Yeah it’s really handy!

MrsKJones · 23/07/2025 21:56

I've also bought hot dog sausages

Hello everyone, I’ll be very unexpectedly joining you next Sunday after losing our perfect 4 year old lab in a horrible accident 😢. Afterwards I thought I couldn’t go through the absolute heart break of losing a dog ever again but we quickly realised we can’t be without a lab so Rory the fox red Labrador will be joining our family on Sunday. I’m so exited and it’s going to be a long 6 days. I hope he’ll help to heal us and he’ll certainly be loved as much as his big brother was. At least we’re prepared for the puppy stage this time!

Sorry for your loss. I have a three year old lab.

(only on this thread for puppy pictures, and am not disappointed).

Pictures of my ‘pup’, and now all grown up.

Reading all of these, I really do need to just calm down a bit don’t I?
My apologies, I still have the odd say where I start thinking irrational thoughts such as “agh I am getting everything wrong!!” when I know I’m actually not, yes I make mistakes but who doesn’t!

Anyway, I shall try and keep my anxiety in check in future 😂🤦‍♀️

We’ve all had days like that.

tizwozliz · 23/07/2025 22:07

Arden Grange liver paste is a favourite here, dog once ate it tube and all 😲

widewomanofthevillage · 24/07/2025 08:25

I have a whole cupboard shelf filled with treats of various quality that Buddy absolutely won't touch. Primula cheese tho - puppy crack!

We're off to the vet again tomorrow to have his drains and stitches removed but I think he'll have to keep the cone a while longer to stop him scratching at the wound. In better news, PetPlan have paid out fast and I'm so glad I went for it instead of the savings account option!

@MrsKJones so excited for you!! ❤️

VanGoSunflowers · 24/07/2025 14:47

I’ve got some news!
First - I finally went to bed last night after seven weeks on the sofa 😂

But - most importantly - we’ve just had our 1:1 session with the gun dog trainer and I absolutely loved her! She was amazing - very encouraging, down to earth and most importantly she had such a lovely way with Pablo - very positive towards him, really laid back as well. I could type an essay about her to be honest! Needless to say, I’m glad I found her and I am really glad that some of you advised to steer clear of the last one!

Pablo did me proud, obviously helped by the fact that there were no other dogs there! So we have some stuff to work on - just perfecting what we’ve already started really, and will probably see her again in three weeks time. I am very pleased!

brushingboots · 24/07/2025 15:30

@VanGoSunflowers This is such lovely news, on both counts!

So delighted that you've found a lovely trainer! It is so, so nice to hear your enthusiasm. What did she get P doing in your session?

MrsKJones · 24/07/2025 15:45

@VanGoSunflowers that is fantastic news
