What breed of dog wouldn’t you have again?

We have a little Beagle/Poodle cross and my word she had the worst characteristics of both. Stupid, disobedient and scent driven like a Beagle. Fussy with food and snappy like a miniature poodle. We do love her despite this.

This evening she pushed us to the limit by chasing rabbits for two hours in the local tiny park. Her recall goes out of the window when she is scent triggered. We thought she’d got better. But no, she’s still a dick.

What breed or cross of dog would you never get again and why?

Beagle. I loved ours dearly but he was constant trouble - running off and disappearing for hours/days, non-stop barking at visitors, stealing food, turning over bins and spreading rubbish everywhere, pulling up the carpet. The list goes on.

PizzaSophiaLoren · 24/06/2025 23:41

@workshyfop it’s such a shame because they are so lovely and full of character.
Wonder if it’s to do with them being bred to be kept as a pack in kennels?

I haven’t owned a breed I wouldn’t have again, but had to pop on to say that it’s not accurate to say that Miniature Poodles are snappy. A nicely bred Poodle of any of the 3 sizes should be and usually is, a naturally happy, friendly dog.

I'm currently caring for two Springers. They're sweet but I wouldn't choose one. My own dopey Podenco is aloof and when he's not going mad he's a couch potato, whereas their energy is just so manic and scrabbley.

PizzaSophiaLoren · 24/06/2025 23:46

@HangingOverthe springers I have known have been highly strung and hard work.

Just wanted to say that beagles are definitely not all “stupid”. Ours has supervillain levels of cunning when it comes to stealing food! But genuinely, ours is never fooled twice and I’ve often been surprised how quickly she works things out.

DublinLaLaLa · 24/06/2025 23:54

Second the comments about a beagle. We had one and he was a right dick head. I do miss him though.

Iridescentdragon · 24/06/2025 23:59

Vizsla, she was so clingy she basically wanted to fuse to your body. I loved her so much but never again.

thequeenoftarts · 25/06/2025 00:01

Anything yappy, I hate them lol. But also I prefer big big dog breeds so thankfully yappy doesn't happen with them

They're very sweet girls but I can't so much as shift in my chair without scrabbling, panting and wagging and two little faces circling me going "whatwedoingwhatwedoingwhatwedoing". The Pod just lifts his head regally like a distainful giraffe and goes back to sleep

My friend not me. Her tween daughter pestered and pestered for months for a French bulldog, she eventually caved and got one, daughter took a few cute pics for Instagram and promptly lost all interest. Friend is raging that she has been left to care for the dog, who can barely breathe or walk, is grumpy and also dog reactive. It’s also cost her a fortune to treat a skin condition.

Lakeland Terrier. Had never heard of this breed and most are probably lovely, but we rescued one upon moving to the uk. Took him for a walk one day soon after and I knocked on a school friends door. Their gorgeous bouncing golden retriever came to the door to say hello and my brand new spanking new rescue doggy (the size of a jack russell, slightly bigger) jumped up with no warning and latched on to the goldies neck. I was 13 at the time and I’m still traumatised (but not as much as my poor friend). Feel so terrible! These boys about 15/16 were passing and they started kicking the poor goldie as he was the bigger dog and I was screaming nooooo it’s the little one! A man ended up getting the hose on them and I picked up my dog, getting bitten badly on the arm. Ended up having to return him to the shelter :( and I had to have tetanus shots ant the hospital. And yes, the golden retriever was ok after stitches. It’s been 25 years! Still feel so bad about this. Apparently they can be a bit vicious… Lakeland’s.

Fanxjanx · 25/06/2025 04:36

Spaniel, they’re so sensitive emotionally and far too aware. I can cope with the energy but I’d never have an intelligent dog breed again.

This is me . Big dogs are so much easier IME .

She’s been unlucky . I have FB’s now and neither have those problems . They do need to avoid the heat but so do most dogs

babyproblems · 25/06/2025 05:51

Came here to say beagle without reading any posts 😂 ex had one and it was friendly and nice but absolutely untrainable and barked constantly.

Sorry but your friend is an idiot for pandering to a tween and not doing enough research on the breed and its issues.

I was brought up with Boarder Collies as family pets because my DM had the time and space for them and she loved training. I loved them but definitely too intelligent for me. If ours weren't learning new things they would teach themselves ( like opening the bolt on stable doors or tipping the handset off the phone if it rang). I'll stick to Labradors.

PopThatBench · 25/06/2025 05:56

I wouldn’t get a Beagle as I know too many people who’ve had their kitchen floor replaced from the dog chewing it (even with 2 hour walks daily).
I would never adopt a dog again (bad experience).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a smaller-medium breed?

I love the bigger breeds, always have done, but I need a smaller dog for my house.

cryinglaughing · 25/06/2025 05:59

Not breeds I have had but ones I have cared for...
Collie - very intelligent but need so much stimulation - have more than one who are on daily anti anxiety meds 🥺
Cockapoo - just can't warm to them, they definitely don't have a type, they are all so different.
EBT - love the look of them but they are generally bonkers and hard work.

K0OLA1D · 25/06/2025 06:00

Saluki. He was beautiful but my God near untrainable. All my dogs have been beautifully trained. He just didn't care to do as he was told. He jumped on the table and counters like a cat and you couldn't let him off unless in a space with 6ft fencing or he'd just jump it.

MaryGreenhill · 25/06/2025 06:02

No to a Springer Spaniel, Collie, Staffy, any fur shedding dog,
I would probably go for a Lurcher.

LandSharksAnonymous · 25/06/2025 06:05

DMum had Goldies all her life then got a cocker - I know she’d never do it again. We love satan dog, but she’s hard work and highly strung

I’ve only had Goldies. But I’d never get a dog bred to suffer or bred to do an activity that I couldn’t provide it with (Collies, Malis) - failure to satisfy those sorts of breeds only ends one way.

GelatinousDynamo · 25/06/2025 06:15

Dachshund. I loved that dog to bits, I even loved that he was so stubborn (lot's of attitude for such a small dog), but the way he suffered in his final years due to his back... I just couldn't go through it again.

party4you · 25/06/2025 06:18

Doberman. I love mine to bits but the puppy stages were hard and she’s too intelligent 😂 she was also attacked by several over dogs, and I’ve had several people yell at me for owning her, which makes walks a bit upsetting sometimes (not her fault though 🩷)

moose62 · 25/06/2025 06:24

Golden retriever. Absolutely beautiful looking dog. Ate everything in sight....j-cloths, tissues, cash...literally anything he could. Slobbered leaving drool on your lap when you stroked him. Terrible wind, probably because if the crap he ate. Hated children which was a problem when he looked so divine.
Numerous trainers, vets etc couldn't solve his issues...completely stubborn. Never again!
