What breed of dog wouldn’t you have again?

We have a little Beagle/Poodle cross and my word she had the worst characteristics of both. Stupid, disobedient and scent driven like a Beagle. Fussy with food and snappy like a miniature poodle. We do love her despite this.

This evening she pushed us to the limit by chasing rabbits for two hours in the local tiny park. Her recall goes out of the window when she is scent triggered. We thought she’d got better. But no, she’s still a dick.

What breed or cross of dog would you never get again and why?

Probably won’t be a popular view but a Golden Retriever! Grew up with them and my parents still have them now after 40 years - I’ve loved them all but the hair, drool, mud magnets. Also much as they’ve been great dogs they don’t quite have enough oompth for me…..

I’ a fully Springer dog owner now, don’t think we’d have anything else!

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 25/06/2025 06:39

Boxers, my childhood pets. I don’t know what my parents were thinking (I expect it was about their looks) but the combination of energy, strength, life-long puppy enthusiasm, not much thought given to training and about five different digestive and health issues made them terrible pets.

I walk dogs now and my least favourite is a Corgi. Snappy with children, aloof; I hope it’s just this dog in particular but friends have said similar about theirs.

I wouldn’t get a Beagle as I know too many people who’ve had their kitchen floor replaced from the dog chewing it (even with 2 hour walks daily).
I would never adopt a dog again (bad experience).

Does anyone have a recommendation for a smaller-medium breed?

I love the bigger breeds, always have done, but I need a smaller dog for my house.

Border terrier. Great smaller dogs with lots of character. I’ve had two and they are a dream.

TheBig50 · 25/06/2025 06:47

This thread has made me laugh. I always thought that if I ever got a dog that I'd love a Beagle! No reason... I guess that explains Snoopy sleeping on top of his kennel 🤣

TubeScreamer · 25/06/2025 06:49

Springer. I’ve had two. Both were highly strung and really hard work. One adored people but hated all dogs, so walking was fun. The other died of a brain tumour at 5 and had all sorts of behavioural issues that we later reassured were related to that.

Golden retrievers all the way for me. Currently on numbers 5 and 6. Wonderful temperaments.

We currently have our first miniature schnauzer and we wouldn't get a different breed again. No shed, doesn't have that doggy smell, is happy to play and roughhouse with my boys and is equally happy to cuddle and snooze.

springintoaction321 · 25/06/2025 06:56

Not the worst but the BEST dog we ever had was a German Short-haired Pointer! Friendly to all humans and dogs, rarely barked, loved by everyone. Oh and didn't she'd.

He got a brain tumour in the end but lived to be 15 🥲

Worked in kennels for 6 years wouldn't get most breeds, especially working breeds...they really do need to fulfil their job to be happy! But especially beagle, spaniel, rottie, chihuahua, GSD, cockapoo. I'd probably stick to a lurcher or a golden 🐕

4pmwinetimebebeh · 25/06/2025 07:03

We had two springers and they were mad but the most gorgeous dogs over. Both full of personality, so cuddly, so fun. I always thought I’d get another if I got a dog but now I’m scared!
Id never get any kind of terrier or small yappy dog!

myplace · 25/06/2025 07:04

What’s a chihuahua’s job? They’ve always struck me as at the spectacularly useless end of the spectrum. @ForestFox44 ?

They don’t even bark properly, they quack.

MyDogTails · 25/06/2025 07:09

Jack Russells. The ones I’ve known were prey driven and didn’t much like people, or other dogs for that matter. They definitely didn’t like cats.

The energy levels were through the roof and could be a total pain.

NormasArse · 25/06/2025 07:09

I’ve had two Labradors and I wouldn’t have one again simply because of the shedding.

We’ve had a lot of dogs because we rescue, so they tend to be older when we get them. My favourites have been lurchers, and a current poodle/schnauzer cross, who is bonkers intelligent.

That’s very interesting to hear. I’ve only really known one miniature schnauzer (my friend’s) and he was a complete arsehole. He was yappy, snappy and aggressive. I thought they were all like that. Every time I went to my friend’s place, I was constantly on edge thinking he was about to bite me.

myplace · 25/06/2025 07:13

I had a bedlington lurcher. He was a delight. So clean.

But the terrier side, I often ponder whether I’d go terrier again. I find docile dogs very dull now, after ‘know it all independent thinking’ terriers.

Only4nomore · 25/06/2025 07:13

Beagle sorry OP they are shits, especially females. They do not listen like stroppy teenage girls will run off and constantly ignore you

Ylvamoon · 25/06/2025 07:14

Cookerpoo.

Clingy, nervous, obsessive and neurotic with inbuilt duracell battery that self charges while running after a ball.

LandSharksAnonymous · 25/06/2025 07:14

@moose62 it’s actually quite common for Goldies to be bad fits for many families. They can be prone to serious guarding issues as well, which actually makes them a bad fit for young families - although every time I’ve ever said that on mumsnet I’ve been shouted down! And they are very set in their ways because once they learn a bad behaviour it’s a nightmare to undo it.

A lot of Goldies end up being re-homed. The difference is, unlike cockerpoos etc, goldie breeds seem to be more likely to take their puppies back. It’s that classic thing of, you rarely see a Goldie in a rescue, but that’s down to the breeders taking them back rather than because they don’t have issues and are perfect dogs.

I was worried about possible yapping but he barely barks. He will do one bark if he hears something suspicious outside the house and is happy when we tell him it's ok. Never barks at someone at the door or visiting because he loves every human that walks the earth and is overjoyed for a visitor. Maybe we got lucky but I know his parents are very sweet as well.

Havanese are perfect little dogs in my opinion!

What is the best dog breed then? I would love a little dog but have no idea!

Likewise! My aunty has one and she's a horrid little thing, very antisocial and liable to snap at/attempt to bite children.

By contrast all the labs/goldies/poodles in the family adore the kids and are wonderful with them.

It varies from person to person, as this thread is showing. If you’re really interested I suggest starting your own thread, or carefully considering what you don’t want in a dog and what your budget is and what your ethics are.

Dearg · 25/06/2025 08:23

I loved my golden retriever, but my god the hair! The smell! And he was brushed every single day of his life.

I now have Labradors, black, and contrary to every post I read, neither of mine have been shedders. Not sure if that’s the colour thing, a food thing, or just luck. Totally unrelated to one another so not a breeding thing.

lionbrain · 25/06/2025 08:28

There are so many dogs that I would never have! Not that I am fussy but there are so many good fits for my lifestyle that it is easier to look at it that way.

On my never list would be Goldie, Sight hound, Beagle, Vizla, very large breed not active enough or live long enough, Brachy breed of any sort, Cavaliar, Husky, Dalmation, GSD,Daschund, Doberman, Chihuahua, Boxer.

I do have wcs at the moment for work but would never have one just as a pet dog.
