I changed my dogs diet abruptly a week ago to home made like chicken and rice, and I thought she would be fine because it’s better for her. but she’s had diarrhoea for a week now and there’s no sign of it stopping. I am having to give her a bath several times a day to wash her hair and also clean the floor after her and it’s breaking me. Is it better to just give her water and no food and stop feeding her

You are supposed to do it gradually.

I know that , but I didn’t know at the time and I feel like after a week of this it might make it worse to reintroduce her old food to take it away again

Bring back the old food for a few weeks.
Then change her diet gradually: like 1/4 new and 3/4 old food for a few days: upto a week... then 1/2 and 1/2 and so on.

Sometimes dogs can have issues with poultry, so it's best to adjust the meat content and maybe try fish for a while.

And make sure you add fruit & vegetables to your dogs diet. But be aware that some stuff we eat and is cheaply available isn't great for our dogs!

AllrightNowBaby · 19/05/2025 10:46

Rice shouldn’t be given to dogs as a main food source but is ok occasionally.
If your dog was a dried food before and you want to change to a healthier option, then raw meat is good. There are lots of places you can buy if from but I would stop the rice right away.

AwkwardPaws27 · 19/05/2025 10:47

Chicken and rice is quite bland and often used short term when dogs have an upset stomach; it wouldn't be suitable as a longterm diet as it isn't nutritionally complete though.

If the diarrhoea is that bad, I'd suggest a vet check to rule out anything more serious. Something like Pro-Kolin might help but it sounds pretty severe from your description.

I didn’t stop feeding her the first time she had diarrhoea, so it never stopped because she never had time to rest her stomach

Chicken and rice isn’t remotely suitable for a long term diet. Go back to her normal food.

TheLimeQuail · 19/05/2025 10:53

I’ve just ordered the pro kolin

Ok I think that’s for the best

Chicken and rice wasn’t the only thing I was feeding her. I’ve been adding sweetcorn, beans and broccoli. She will also eat sweet potato and cheese, but she won’t eat fruit. She likes beef and tuna as well

Definitely pro kolin and scrambled egg. They don't recommend chicken and rice for upset tummies now either. What did you feed before?

That’s not a balanced diet for a dog though - you need to make sure she’s getting the right nutrients in the right amounts or you could make her really sick.

If you want to feed homemade then you need to do it properly and that often involves adding supplements, oils etc. to their food. It can be expensive and it’s not always easy to get it right.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 19/05/2025 10:56

I would take her off the chicken. My dog seems to be allergic to chicken (runny poo) but is fine with turkey, and fish.

LandSharksAnonymous · 19/05/2025 10:57

There is a reason why dog food companies have teams - literally dozens of people - working on recipes for dogs. Because it’s complicated and hard to get right. There’s a hell of a lot of science behind it. You can just bung food into a bowl and hope for the best.

You need to switch her back and take her to the vet - she 100% needs to be checked out after that amount of diarrhoea. Can’t believe no one’s said take her to the vet already tbh. Absolutely disgraceful you’ve let this continue to such a degree you’ve had to bath her several times a day. I’d be really bloody surprised if there’s not some serious damage done by this.

CagneyNYPD1 · 19/05/2025 11:08

She needs a vet visit today. I would want to rule out a campylobacter infection from the chicken she has eaten.

You’re joking? I didn’t feed her expired chicken

No. You just let her get into such a state she needed multiple baths a day as she was, I presume, covered in her own faces.

Take her to the vet.

CagneyNYPD1 · 19/05/2025 11:42

I didn’t suggest that you had fed your dog expired chicken. Chicken does not need to be out of date to be contaminated with Campylobacter. That’s why you hear stories of people going down with upset tummies after BBQs etc.

But your dog’s symptoms suggest that it isn’t just the sudden change of diet. Campylobacter is one of the most common infections that will cause such severe diarrhoea in dogs.

She needs medical attention today. The vets may well want you to collect poo samples over the next few days to get lab tested for confirmation. They may start her on antibiotics straight away.

Pro Kolin will definitely help and the vets may also want to put her on some like Royal Canin Gastrointestinal food.

If you can take photos of the diarrhoea to show the vet, that will help.

How old is your dog?

TheLimeQuail · 19/05/2025 11:44

There are no appointments. Is it ok to give her yogurt with live bacteria until her pro kolin arrives tomorrow.

OP posts:
TheLimeQuail · 19/05/2025 11:49

Im surprised, I didn’t know that about chicken. She is 8. Sorry if tmi, The diarrhoea is runny and orange

CagneyNYPD1 · 19/05/2025 11:51

What did the vets suggest? When can they see her?

Thatcannotberight · 19/05/2025 12:20

I would get the pro kolin today. You can buy it at Pets at Home or most other pet shops.

LandSharksAnonymous · 19/05/2025 12:52

Christ on a bike OP. Stop taking veterinary advice off people on mumsnet and take your sick dog the vets. You caused this with your idiocy, don’t prolong it or risk making it worse.

Your dog has been sick for a week. If this was one of my dogs, I’d have been at the vets a week ago. That being said, I’m not foolish enough to try and alter my dogs diet when I know nothing about animal diets, so maybe my expectations of you are a bit high.

Thatcannotberight · 19/05/2025 13:12

Oh, I missed that it has been for a week. Definitely needs seeing ASAP. A day of that would be enough to not feed it again. I foolishly tried raw for my BT on the advice of someone "knowledgeable." It went right through her and it took me a couple of days to get her right again. That only lasted one day and the rest went in the bin.
