Handhold please - elderly rescue dog attacked by Doberman this afternoon 😢

We were walking our gorgeous ‘probably’ 15 year old rescue dog Meg past our friends house this afternoon when a dog they were looking after suddenly jumped through a gap in their fence, grabbed her by the tail and refused to let go. My husband eventually managed to get the dog off and we had to take her straight to the emergency vet. We’ve had to leave her there for treatment - they need to close the wounds and are trying to staple them under local anaesthetic and sedation due to her age and the heart murmur they have found.

Vet bills will be paid by the owner of the dog but right now I just need some random dog lovers on the internet to hold my virtual hand as we anxiously wait for news please. 😢😢

I'm so sorry OP. How traumatic for you all. Your poor girl. I'd be beside myself too. They are so special to us and so very loved. I will keep everything crossed for Meg.

Amy106 · 12/04/2025 21:54

That’s awful. I am so sorry that happened to poor Meg. I am sending virtual hand holds and hugs and hoping all will be well.

Hfjfjfjfjfj · 12/04/2025 21:55

So sorry. Can you drop off a t shirt or blanket so she has something that smells of home.

Craftysue · 12/04/2025 21:58

Poor Meg . I hope she's ok and you can see her soon. Fingers crossed everything is ok 🤞

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 13/04/2025 01:01

She’s home! Wearing a huge cone of shame (which she loathes) and with a backside crisscrossed with stitches - poor baby! They couldn’t staple so she had to have a general after the sedation and local but she came through it all! Now for a stiff gin and a night of broken sleep! Thank you all 💐

So happy for you. So glad she made it through!

SnowSnow · 13/04/2025 06:09

Poor Meg and poor you. Hope you managed a little sleep and she isn’t too unsettled. Sounds horrendous and must have been so scary. Sending hugs.

Raininginparadise2 · 13/04/2025 06:18

Poor adorable Meg. Hope she recovers soon.🥰 xx

charabang · 13/04/2025 06:48

Poor Meg. You must all be in a state of shock. I hope she makes a good recovery.

Craftysue · 13/04/2025 07:40

I'm glad she's home - it sounds like she's been through it! Enjoy your drink and I hope she makes a good recovery

myplace · 13/04/2025 07:44

Poor Meg! Be prepared for a slow recovery. My old boy wasn’t quite the same after a similar incident. He just seemed to age dramatically.

💐

NewAgeNewMe · 13/04/2025 07:45

Oh bless her. How is she doing? Happened to an another dog owner I walk with, lots of stitches but is ok now. Fingers crossed yours will be back to normal soon ❤️

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 13/04/2025 14:41

Will she get used to the enormous cone of shame or is there an alternative we could consider? She’s sleeping a lot (could be the gabapentin) but when she tries to move she struggles to lift her head and keep bashing into everything!

Aww poor Meg. Bless her. Mine can’t cope with big plastic cones so I have bought them soft padded ones from Amazon before. Much softer but achieve the same. Or take the cone off while u are watching if she’s not bothering the stitches. Hope she recovers soon

In my house it's called a cone of bravery!

Gundogday · 13/04/2025 14:46

Looks like she had the gin, not you!

Sending her gentle hugs and wishing her a speedy recovery.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 13/04/2025 14:46

Aw I hope she recovers well, she is beautiful ❤️
There are donut shaped ones you can get but if she doesn't like the cone she might not like it either. When my husky was recovering from surgery I took a big clean t shirt, cut leg holes out and put it on her like a body suit and because she knew she couldn't get at the stitches she didn't try to get at them, but she was also a lot more comfortable.

NewAgeNewMe · 13/04/2025 14:52

Oh bless her! Can she get to the stitches?

I bought a bodysuit off Amazon for mine when she had to have a lump removed under her back leg. When she had eye surgery I got the soft doughnut which madam managed to learn how to wriggle out of 😬

myplace · 13/04/2025 16:20

You can get inflatable donuts. Body suits might not work depending where the injury is.

noctilucentcloud · 13/04/2025 16:22

Poor girl. Gabapentin can definitely make them sleepy.

Hfjfjfjfjfj · 13/04/2025 17:27

can You get an old t shirt over the stitches in any way?

If mine was not going for the stitches much and I was with her I would take the cone off. Obvious risks with this.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 13/04/2025 17:37

As others have said - yes there are the padded ones you can get
or dress her in something.

My Vet once sent my Lab home ' dressed ' in a tee shirt of her husbands ! so head through like we would do, front paws through the arm holes then tee shirt tied in a knot on her back - depends of course just where exactly all her wounds/stitches are.

It's Sunday afternoon if you are in the UK, but tee shirts can be bought cheaply in supermarkets / Primark etc tomorrow or even found in charity shops ( but that takes more time to source the right size )

yes she may get some urine on them when she wees, but that's not really important - tee shirts are cheap and the really good news is she survived and is home with you. thank goodness !

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 13/04/2025 17:41

or of course if the wounds/stitches are at the back end, put the tee shirt on the other way around - tail through head, back legs through the armholes etc
and take it off for toileting - yes i know it's a nuisance but really how many times does she really go to the loo.

If I had seen your thread last night I too would have held your hand then, but it's just popped up in ' last hour ' threads.

GMH1974 · 13/04/2025 17:43

I'm so glad your poor dog came through the operation.

Craftysue · 13/04/2025 17:50

For her age it sounds like she's doing great- she's lovely even with the cone on x I hope she continues to get better in the coming days - please keep us updated if you have time
