Handhold please - elderly rescue dog attacked by Doberman this afternoon 😢

We were walking our gorgeous ‘probably’ 15 year old rescue dog Meg past our friends house this afternoon when a dog they were looking after suddenly jumped through a gap in their fence, grabbed her by the tail and refused to let go. My husband eventually managed to get the dog off and we had to take her straight to the emergency vet. We’ve had to leave her there for treatment - they need to close the wounds and are trying to staple them under local anaesthetic and sedation due to her age and the heart murmur they have found.

Vet bills will be paid by the owner of the dog but right now I just need some random dog lovers on the internet to hold my virtual hand as we anxiously wait for news please. 😢😢

We take the cone off when our dog is with us and supervised, can give him quite a lot of respite.

Poor Meg and poor you, what a horrible shock.

I second taking the cone off when she’s supervised, tbf they tend to nibble stitches a little later when they start healing.

Will she get used to the enormous cone of shame or is there an alternative we could consider? She’s sleeping a lot (could be the gabapentin) but when she tries to move she struggles to lift her head and keep bashing into everything!

When my old girl was spayed I bought her a baby grow looking thing so she could move easily but not lick stitches. You can also get small inflatable things that go around the neck.

Hope she’s on the mend soon

After trying to only use the cone at bedtime or when we weren’t following her around, watching her like hawks, today we’ve tried the suggestion on here of a t-shirt which she is unimpressed with but seems 🤞to be working so far! Thank you! 💐 Got an appointment with our vet this afternoon and hoping she starts feeling happier soon. Thanks for all the support.

Bless her.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 14/04/2025 13:18

Aw she may not be impressed but I suspect she prefers it to the cone.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 14/04/2025 13:39

Oh bless, she looks like a proper sweetheart.

i hope her appointment goes well this afternoon & she recovers well. Does she seem ok within herself?

Hfjfjfjfjfj · 14/04/2025 15:05

Can The vet come to you if it is just to check stitches and temperature? Big cost hike but much less stress for your poor old dog.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 14/04/2025 19:28

The vet visit went well, wounds healing nicely with no infection and now Meg’s wearing what looks like a travel pillow with the air of a very disgruntled holiday maker waiting for the rep to answer her many complaints! 🤣

your ok too Flowers

SpringIsSpringing25 · 15/04/2025 00:20

the 'no dignity doughnut'. Poor Meg, but they do seem more comfortable than the cones..

hopefully she heals up soon and she isn't too traumatised by it xx

NewAgeNewMe · 17/04/2025 07:48

How’s she doing?

Ellmau · 17/04/2025 07:50

Ah, she does look disgruntled n her travel pillow.

I hope she continues to do well.
