Does anyone own a Shichon? We have been considering a number of small breeds and keep coming back to these. Any experience welcome !

As I said Hoppinggreen, I really couldn't give a shit. It's not a huge insult to call my dog a Mongrel, who cares? Pedigree, crossbreed, Mongrel. They're all dogs at the end of the day. And yes, you're right, all that matters is they're happy and healthy and well cared for.

What about the parents? I’ve no doubt your dog is loved and has a great life, but can you say the same for the parents?

I can yes because I'm still in touch with the breeder and we see his mum from time to time. She has had 2 litters and will have no more and is a much loved family dog

Riapia · 06/04/2025 18:51

Oh dear OP.
Nobody on MN would be seen out walking a dog that didn’t have a pedigree that would make a member of the royal family envious.
😉😁😁.

Ruminatingly · 06/04/2025 19:04

I have one, she's 3/4 bichon 1/4 shit Tzu. I got her as a puppy from a lovely family. She was from her mother's 2nd litter. She's 2 today and is the lappiest of lap dogs. Loves attention from anybody, is massively stubborn but is super food motivated. She can get a bit yappy sometimes but she's usually just trying to tell people she wants to be their friend

I chose the mix because they are loving, daft and walk well but aren't necessarily needing miles every day. They're hypoallergenic.

For all the people asking why not a rescue, I have a child and have to be out of the house for around 4 hours at a time for work so every dog I looked up was ruled out. It's such a judge question to ask

Verv · 06/04/2025 19:12

I have a bichon Maltese cross and prior to that a bichon papillon cross.
They are absolute little beams of sunshine. Not too sharp but really loving and entertaining.
I’ll always go for a bichon mix. They’re ace.

No dog is truly hypoallergenic.

Sigh.

Perhaps it’s because some of us are aware that many crosses come from the imported dog or puppy farm trade.

Can I suggest a poodle? Great little dogs, very healthy and from a proper breeder will be fully health checked.

Oh my GOD. NOOOOOOOO. He's a Mongrel, A MONGREL? I'm taking him to the rescue centre RIGHT NOW. A Mongrel you say? Oh God, I could just lay down and die right now.

Actually have a little Google. A crossbreed is intentional breeding of 2 pure bred dogs. Which is what a schichon is. I've no idea what on earth you're talking about saying I don't accept what dog I have. I could not give a single shit if anyone calls him a mongrel. Hes the best dog on the planet as far as im concerned. And all names are made up. Even names of pedigree dogs. Someone made them up too 😂

Well I’m glad to hear you and your mongrel are very happy. I don’t need to google to learn about the rubbish you’re spouting. Look at the kennel club to know recognised breeds. 😉

ItsStillWork · 06/04/2025 20:09

I’ve got a Maltipoo. Which is a cross breed between a Maltese and a Poodle. Mines crossed with a toy one.

i did really research full breeds, spoke to numerous kennel club breeders and even a breeder from the breed club.

not one breeder from a “reputable breeder” was interested in were the puppy was going, asked no questions about me, my family or working pattern etc.

they were also inbreeding, so breeding with grandparents etc of the mother of the pups (a lot of the breeders got very funny about me asking about inbreeding) and there was one club breed judge who dropped into conversation that the puppy and its father both had a hernia 🤔.

also all breeders are doing it for the money, you’re very naive if you think they aren’t.

Wolfiefan · 06/04/2025 20:35

@ItsStillWork they weren’t reputable.
I don’t care whether a dog is pedigree or not. I do care about animal welfare.

GoldPoster · 06/04/2025 20:44

I wish someone would cross a Pekingese with a poodle, so we could have a peek -a-poo dog

LandSharksAnonymous · 06/04/2025 20:46

Tell that to my bank balance. I’ll be £5K out of pocket, at least (assuming my girl has nine pups) when I have a litter later this year. Potentially £10K if she only has seven pups.

Most of what you’ve said isn’t even remotely believable. You wanted your designer mongrel and you’ve created a story to suit your narrative - that’s fine, but don’t try and claim breeders are breeding grandparents with their grandkids (at least I think that’s what you’re claiming…most of your post makes little sense).

Ecrire · 06/04/2025 20:47

We’ve got one! Has lit up our lives for close to 11 years long. Long may she reign .:) gorgeous, soft, caring, beautiful pup. She was 11 months old when DS was born and 5 years old when DD was born and they’ve never known life without her.

Karmakamelion · 06/04/2025 20:50

Bologneselove · 06/04/2025 12:49

‘Zuchon’ lol what dog breeds have you made that name up from for to call your crossbreed?🙄

Why so sneering? And rude

Believe what you like, what I’ve said is true.

also if you’re out of pocket, then why are you doing it? Why put in all the work for no money, or for it to cost you money?

I went for my designer breed after realising that full breeds weren’t all that.

Because I’m passionate about the breed? Because my dogs have gone on to be champions? Because my involvement in the breed has made the breed healthier? Because I don’t need the money? Because my dogs have made people’s lives better? Because because because. There’s a million things I could say…

Not everything has to be about money - but the fact you think it does says a lot about you.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/04/2025 21:07

I've got a Patterdale - she's a pure breed Patterdale, but the breed was created a century or so ago by cross breeding whippets with Fell terriers, a bit of fox terrier in there too and possibly some Jack Russell.

So she's a manufactured pure breed.

For the love of God, don't get a Patterdale though. Save yourselves while you still can...

Mingenious · 06/04/2025 21:18

I’ve always thought patterdales aren’t for the faint hearted 🤣 I’d quite like one though.

Cross breeds have had made up names for as long as there’s been dogs. I’m a lurcher owner, or a beddy whip, or a whiplington, you can choose your favourite. He’s a marvellous dog, but ultimately a mongrel. That doesn’t matter much to me as he’s everything I could ever want in a hound and I think the KC is complete nonsense, but it matters to others while they’re parading round their deformed pure bred dogs like the certificate means the dog functions as it should as a dog (it doesn’t, look at GSD’d & frenchies)

it’s not like the op has asked our opinion on whether she should buy a cross between a Great Dane and a chihuahua.

I’m sure it’ll be a lovely dog, op, like they all are if you treat them properly.

Wolfiefan · 06/04/2025 21:30

It’s not just about the pup you buy. (Although breeders of such mixes rarely know or even care enough to do the correct specialist testing before breeding,) It is about the welfare of the parents too.
Realiy good breeders care passionately about the breed. They invest time, money, energy and so much more to try and produce the very best and healthiest examples of the breed that they can. They may or may not make any profit. But it’s not what drives them.

It's not a 'judge' question to ask.

She just looking for a wee dog to love that isn't too far away. It's a perfectly reasonable question to ask..

It might not have suited your situation, but it might suit herself , no need to be so defensive.

People look at me like I'm mad when I say mine is a mongrel, his mum was a red setter and his dad a labrador. Not sure what I'd call him. Labraset? Settador?

Yoursselfmysselfandotherss · 07/04/2025 09:29

I’ve asked a few people why they’ve gone for a poodle cross. Many say they had to go for a poodle cross because of allergies, and the crosses are hypoallergenic. People also say that it’s because they don’t shed. Where does this misinformation come from?

More than one person has told me that there’s isn’t a poodle cross because the parents are pedigree cockapoos.

You only need to make up a stupid name for him if you want to sell him to someone gullible for £1000

Sadly, people will honestly believe anything - and we see it all the time both in real life and on the doghouse. Most of society appear to lack basic critical thinking skills - particularly when it comes to pets.

Someone posted recently about a well-known puppy farm and asked if people would recommend it. About eight posters said 'no, it's well known puppy farm.' And the Poster tried to defend it with 'but they have a nice website.'

My friend fell for 'mongrels are healthier' bullshit. ' (Or cross-breeds - whatever we want to call them). She's got a Springador..which has an elbow score of 2/3. It can barely walk let alone run.

It's a marketing gimmic ('healthier' 'doesn't shed' 'hypoallergenic') and idiots fall for it time and time again and dogs suffer as a result.

If I am honest, I don't really care if a dog is a pedigree or a mongrel. What I care about is that it came from a good home, from a responsible breeder (insert all criteria here), and it has gone to a good home. But, unfortunately, most of the designer doodle/mongrel breeders around today are not responsible breeders and they do not sell to good homes.

Oh my God, here we go 🙄. Can we stop the stupidity and the ridiculous superiority. No-one buys a dog for its name FFS. And people pay what they are comfortable with and what they think something is worth, and that goes for absolutely everything in life.
