Do you pick up other dog's poo?

We regularly walk our dog on the recreation ground in our village. It has several dog poo bins dotted around at various points. However lots of people still don't pick up after their dog and if I come across mess left by another owner I do pick it up and dispose of it so that other people, especially children, don't step in it. We also pick up any we come across on pavements.

Today we went for a country walk and on several of the footpaths there was dog mess. I picked it up but DH said we should just leave it as it was different from being in the playing field or pavement where it was a hazard. Plus he said it was gross having to walk for several miles carrying another dogs mess . He said he thought 99% of owners would leave it.

Do other dog owners always pick up poo that has been left? Or is DH right and I should just leave it unless it's on a pavement or playing field?

No, I don’t pick up dog poo left by another dog. I have on occasions flicked poo into the grass off a footpath using a stick but that’s about it.

InTheWindow · 22/03/2025 22:26

Only on occasions it has been at the start/end of DDs school run club route around the playing field and I happen to have a dog bag in my pocket. I would have to use a whole packet of bags every week if I did it on every walk, and most of my walks are rural with no bins. I also have no idea what other people’s dogs have been eating and whether they are wormed/vaccinated. I know I wouldn’t be touching the poo, but still too close for me.

I'm very grateful to dog owners who do pick up poo. I'd not expect it in woods etc. but where children play is really kind. We get a lot on the green where my children play and I find a stick and poke it in the ground nearby so no one steps on it. I've tried picking some up before but I have a very sensitive gag reflex and it makes me repeatedly retch.

SirChenjins · 22/03/2025 22:34

I would force myself to do it if it was outside a school or somewhere where a lot of people would be walking, but I really hate picking up other dog’s poos. It’s like cleaning up other kid’s vomit - I can clean my own DC’s but struggle with other people’s.

NoWordForFluffy · 22/03/2025 22:34

I do if my dog poos right next to another dog's poo. But not otherwise, as I'd get through a roll of bags every day or so.

fruitpastille · 22/03/2025 22:35

Very occasionally but only if I'm close to a bin or it's where my kids play.

Fleakster · 22/03/2025 22:38

I do and I over poo bags to any fucker who isn’t picking up and then if they don’t take one I challenge them with the respect they deserve. This is in a park - less bothered the wilder it gets

Offleyhoo · 22/03/2025 22:39

I do if it's especially hazardous and easy to dispose of but not generally.

Qmalrg · 22/03/2025 22:42

I only pick up other people’s dog shit if it’s in the vicinity of my house. Because I don’t want it trodden in front of my house or inside my house. If I come across shit in the park, there’s no way I pick that up. Gross.

I always pick up my dog’s shit.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 22/03/2025 22:45

I think it's very nice of you to do so.

I would only pick up someone else's dogs poo if it was inevitable a child would stand in it such as a school or nursery entrance or a playground.

TheOliveFinch · 22/03/2025 23:00

Yes I do every time I walk my dog because I cannot stand it being left behind by other irresponsible owners when there are children playing or anyone likely to step in it

BatchCookBabe · 22/03/2025 23:10

Not a chance.

LadyWiddiothethird · 22/03/2025 23:14

I have done on the odd occasion it has been outside my house.Otherwise absolutely not!!

noctilucentcloud · 23/03/2025 08:49

Yes I do in and around the built up areas where I live, particularly if it's on a pavement. I get fed up of it though. I don't in wilder areas but I would flick any off a path if a person's inconsiderate enough to leave it there.

34NotDeadYet · 23/03/2025 08:54

Yes, frequently, as a consequence of living next to my children’s school which has large grounds and is a popular dog walking spot for the remarkably large number of selfish thoughtless fuckers in our ‘naice’ little middle class village. Also dispose of abandoned bags of poo. Either I pick it up or the kids, mine or someone else’s, stands in it and drags it through school/my house, and quite frankly I’m not minded to make anyone else’s existence any more miserable than it has to be if there’s something I can do about it. I absolutely SEETHE each time though.

faerietales · 23/03/2025 09:02

Nope.

LandSharksAnonymous · 23/03/2025 09:08

No. I have four dogs of my own - my hands are full with their poo! BUT sometimes I do rent a secure field and if I see a dog poo in there I will pick it up. The field is three acres so even if you’re watching your dog, trying to pin down the exact pop location is hard! But everyone else in the field does the same

Nolongera · 23/03/2025 09:16

I do, if it's somewhere I am likely to stand in it or if it's near the kids park at the end of our street.

Bad enough picking your own dogs, but the clay cold mound of some selfish lazy pricks dog is ten times worse.

Spookywoodhollow · 23/03/2025 09:18

Yes I do. Not all the time but especially if it’s close to my own dogs poo.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 23/03/2025 09:35

@Nolongera I love that description!

I always pick up any I find in the village park/recreation ground near us. It drives me mad though. There are four exits out of the park and each one has a dog bin. It's not possible to leave the park without passing a bin. And the park is just a big open space so there's nowhere a dog can be out of sight of the owner, so it's not like the owners are unaware of where the dog has crapped.

I also pick up if it's on a pavement because it's so disgusting if people accidentally walk in it. DH does the same. But he draws the line at footpaths whereas I don't. Where we were yesterday was heathland, so no handy stick to flick it away with.

I pick up the bags that those kind people leave in trees but no, not actual poo. It's kind of like changing a nappy. I coped with my own kids but other children? 🤮

Iloveacurry · 23/03/2025 09:39

I’ll pick another dogs poo from paths, playing fields plus the cricket field near us because I’m thinking of kids, including my own kids, who might just walk in it. Some dog owners are lazy.

Nolongera · 23/03/2025 09:41

I spend at least 2 hours a day out walking my dog, yet I rarely see anyone not pick up up. But there is always loads lying about.

They must either do it first thing in the morning or last thing at night when no one is about. I suspect some only pick up if they are being observed.

I have seen people engrossed in their phones or chatting with a friend who genuinely didn't notice but they really should be looking out.

Our local football pitch has loads on it and I reckon it's the same person with a grudge or just a massive antisocial arsehole.

Aworldofmyown · 23/03/2025 09:44

I agree with your husband.

amber763 · 23/03/2025 09:47

No, I always pick up my own dogs tiny poos of course but the irresponsible owners who leave the poo where Iive all seem to all have massive dogs who do massive piles of poo and I'd go through bags and bags if I started picking it all up after them. I do pick up bagged poo that's been left on the ground/hung on trees etc. It's so so disgusting that people don't pick up. I don't know how people can just leave it.
