The bloody cat uses the dog bed as a litter tray and pisses in the bed every day. I’m giving up washing it as it’s pointless as it just gets pissed in again the next day. The bed is bulky and I have to wash the sleeping mat and then also the main structure of the bed as the cat wees up the cushioned sides. As it’s so bulky I have to wash these two bits separately so it’s two washing machine washes a day and takes ages to dry.

dog is a small cockerpoo size dog (13kg)

Im going round in circles trying to find a bed which will be easier to sort out.

so either something with a totally waterproof cover which I can zip off and just wash the cover?

a machine washable bed which fits in the washing machine in one go so my electricity bill isn’t as bad and ideally dries quicker?

or do I go for one of those canvas camp bed type beds which might be less attractive for the cat to wee on….but not as cosy for my elderly dog?

or some other option I haven’t thought of?

specific recommendations very welcome please.

My lab sleeps on a single duvet on the floor. The cover gets washed every couple of days and the actual duvet about once a month or when I notice it’s stinky.

But. You need to address the cat using it! Does it have a clean and inviting litter tray nearby? Our cats won’t go near the dog bed. Or can the bed be in a room the cat isn’t allowed in?

MagicPharmacist · 09/03/2025 20:43

My older cat will piss on the doormat if the litter tray is dirty, so I feel your pain. But you need to find a way to stop it. I wonder if it’s a dominance thing? Do they get on?

HaagenYAAS · 09/03/2025 20:43

Just a hard plastic bed with a fleece blanket inside that you wash every day and then replace with another??
and yes you need to sort the cat! Can you put tinfoil over the dog bed for a couple of days to try and break the cycle, and have the dog sleep elsewhere for a bit?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 09/03/2025 20:45

I have 3 of these KROSER Reversible Dog Bed (Cool &... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08KXNXVRQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share You just wash the cover.

Two of them are in plastic dog beds like these https://amzn.eu/d/1FCEemo

They tend to sleep in those two beds a lot (they have a large choice of beds). The third mattress is just on the floor and is rarely chosen by either of the dogs. I think they feel more secure with the surround of the plastic bed.

This is really clever. I came on post as my darling is getting on a bit and wanted to sneak some advice on dog beds (I've spent mad money on water resistant/new beds) but I didn't think something so simple! My washing machine is 9kg too, so a single duvet should fit! I could get 2x so I have spare. Is a cover really needed if you're washing it often? She pees herself here and there, not a lot but leaks (she's on hormones but still leaks bless her) I'm just curious of your thoughts. Sorry don't mean to hijack!

RandomMess · 09/03/2025 20:47

I was going to say a hard plastic bed too.

Any idea why cat is being a pisser. One of mine has pee issues too so you have my sympathies.

Wereongunoil · 09/03/2025 20:47

timet ogo dog beds

Made to measure normal waterproof or heavy duty waterproof

I have them for my car cages, they're brilliant. Not particularly cheap but mine tend to ruin a bed in the car for some reason. I've not bought one since getting these

Thatwouldbeme · 09/03/2025 20:50

Get a hard plastic bed and some vet bedding, very easy to wash and quick drying.

redboxer321 · 09/03/2025 20:54

I bought a cotton zipped cover and filled it with foam crumb. Put that into a waterproof zipped cover. Put a cot size waterproof mattress cover over the bottom of the waterproof cover and then a fluffy zipped cover over the top of the whole thing. I wash the cover and mattress protector if she has a wee on it and chuck some anti-enzyme cleaning liquid in with it too. Happily she has stopped weeing on the bed but made it pretty easy to wash when I had to do it regularly. I just wiped off the waterproof cover and used a bit of anti-enzyme liquid too. Crumb was from an upholstery supplier and covers from ebay.

Cat is just a total fuckwit. Pisses on the sofa, pisses on my bed, pisses on me, pisses everywhere. Half my fucking house is covered in tin foil. It’s stress piss apparently, vet can’t find anything wrong with him. Yes he’s neutered. He loves the dog. He has nothing to be stressed about. He has clean cat litter trays. He used them fine for 5 years. He has the cystese capsules every day. I have a big bottle of stop urine spray that I spray on everything and it doesn’t put him off.

Can’t cope with a duvet….they take forever to dry and I’m forever having to wash my own bed duvets due to cat piss.

I feel that wouldn’t be very cushioned? Not comfy?

I know it's drastic but our fuckwit now spends overnight and some of the day in his pen & catio so that's 100% his territory and the pissing is only ver occasional now when he's being neurotic about visitors or a room has been arranged etc.

2Pandora · 09/03/2025 20:58

One of my dogs had an adverse reaction to some medication and was urinating every time he laid down ( up to 12 changes a day) We went down the duvet in a waterproof cover with an ordinary cover on top route . Reduced the washing substantially.
Good luck

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 09/03/2025 20:59

Tuffies wipe clean bed. Not cheap but worth the outlay. Yours would be fine in the small size. They really are the Rolls Royce of dog beds, and don't ever absorb water/smell/odour.

RandomMess · 09/03/2025 20:59

Also keep room doors shut and ignore the cat sulk.

You could fold up some fleece blankets. You may be able to get a waterproof cushion I'll go look.

This is a good idea and if it’s as waterproof as it says will be good. Thanks.

I spent £900 on a catio for him which he has free access to (he’s a house cat) via a cat flap but he still wees everywhere.

House is open plan apart from the bedrooms so I can’t stop him getting to the dog bed.

Stop the free access, that's too much space,

ElbowsUpRising · 09/03/2025 21:04

Kuromi86 · 09/03/2025 20:59

A Tuffie bed, expensive but I have 5 and my oldest one I’ve had for about 13 years and it’s still going strong. Wipe or hose clean and dogs love them. https://www.tuffies.co.uk/?srsltid=AfmBOoqYT-gU7yzDaN8yjtfWviV9mD9olgUBby_jK8fHR8Rs9KJEqZQ1

I also buy sofa cushion covers cheap on Amazon that are elasticated and they go over the beds to make them a little more cosy.

Thanks, I don’t mind paying if it’s definitely wee proof…do you think the wipe clean one would live up being that waterproof?

I don’t even have doorways never mind doors. The bedroom doors are shut when we’re not in to prevent him getting on our beds. I can’t restrict access anymore than that.

My spaniel has a single duvet and I've repurposed a waterproof duvet cover from when my DD was small, then a normal duvet cover, the spaniel is fine but the elderly JRT likes to pee on the spaniels blankets/bed no matter what is down.
I fold the duvet over and lay a thinner fleece/sheet on top and wash the cover and the fleece when needed, don't need to wash the duvet as much as it's kept dry from peeing JRTs and muddy spaniels alike!
