The bloody cat uses the dog bed as a litter tray and pisses in the bed every day. I’m giving up washing it as it’s pointless as it just gets pissed in again the next day. The bed is bulky and I have to wash the sleeping mat and then also the main structure of the bed as the cat wees up the cushioned sides. As it’s so bulky I have to wash these two bits separately so it’s two washing machine washes a day and takes ages to dry.

dog is a small cockerpoo size dog (13kg)

Im going round in circles trying to find a bed which will be easier to sort out.

so either something with a totally waterproof cover which I can zip off and just wash the cover?

a machine washable bed which fits in the washing machine in one go so my electricity bill isn’t as bad and ideally dries quicker?

or do I go for one of those canvas camp bed type beds which might be less attractive for the cat to wee on….but not as cosy for my elderly dog?

or some other option I haven’t thought of?

specific recommendations very welcome please.

Thanks, I don’t mind paying if it’s definitely wee proof…do you think the wipe clean one would live up being that waterproof?

They are completely waterproof, I foster dogs and I’ve had many beds get pee’d or sicked on. I have all the beds as tuffies as they are so easy to clean with some kitchen roll and spray. You won’t regret having one!

One of my dogs had an adverse reaction to some medication and was urinating every time he laid down ( up to 12 changes a day) We went down the duvet in a waterproof cover with an ordinary cover on top route . Reduced the washing substantially.
Good luck

Ive got a waterproof duvet cover on my duvet and last time he weed on that the duvet still smelt of cat wee and needed washing! It wasn’t wet but might have felt slightly damp.

Had similar issue and bought waterproof elasticates cot bed sheets from Dunelm and popped them over the top. These went in the wash. Still needed to wash, but was easier.

Fabulous. Thank you. Sounds like a tuffie will do the trick.

i think i might also ask the vet about putting the cat on Valium or something.

No stop free access into the house. He's trapped in the catio apart from evenings.

In fact start with several days of no access the house at all.

You don't have foxes or lots of cats in your garden that can cause lots of pissing.

The catio is quite small, it’s tall but it’s only like 3ftx6ft….i wouldn’t be happy to cage him in there all day.

never seen other cats or foxes in our garden.

My rabbits do territorial weeing if the other pets annoy them so they get vet bed. It's machine washable and goes in the dryer and you just buy strips and cut it up.

RandomMess · 09/03/2025 21:24

@ElbowsUpRising it's not long term/forever. A few days and then limited access to the house for several weeks/months before hopefully it's sorted or at least much better.

I know it feels horrid we've had to do the same but it's pretty much solved the issue. He now sees the pen as his territory and does pee in the house to claim it.

Put puppy pads all over inside the dog bed and put a blanket over them. There are waterproof puppy blankets on Amazon, too (we got two from Feandrea for our puppy, but there are others). This way, you'll only have to wash the blankets.

Wolfiefan · 09/03/2025 21:41

You can get washable puppy pads. They could help.

MissHollysDolly · 09/03/2025 21:49

Get a few washable bet mats designed for incontinence.

Bedsure waterproof dog bed from Amazon. I’ve put mine in the washer, it came out fine

biscuitsandbooks · 09/03/2025 22:00

I would be shutting the cat outside unless he was able to be supervised.
