Does this breed exist?!

Just for a bit of fun before all of the rescue obsessed jump on. My rescue is currently sat at my feet. We also have many years training, socialising and owning dogs between us but also know genetics trump most things!

My sister has always had Newfoundland’s. She loves everything about them except that they just aren’t very portable and don’t fit easily in caravans or holiday lets. Ideally she would shrink a newf for her next dog but as that’s not a thing she’s been wondering if there was anything else that she may like.

What she’s looking for:
KC reg breed only. No crosses. Bonus points for rare breeds. She does show.
Medium exercise requirements. No mad collies or needing hours of running to be able to sit still.
Cuddly affectionate personality. Personality is most important.
Friendly to everyone, kids and strangers included.
Something happy to go anywhere the family goes so pretty robust and not easily spooked.
Small/medium.
Don’t mind fluffy, grooming isn’t an issue. Prefer no curly coats that need to go to the groomer.
Doesn't need to be a genius but biddable.

What she doesn’t want:
Nothing that barks all the time.
No brachys, staffies or bull breeds.
No sighthounds (own chickens and rabbits!)
Nothing that can’t be left for 2mins without howling the place down (sorry poodles that’s you!)
Nothing bred to fight or guard.
No spaniels/ pointers etc (sorry spaniel lovers but they are just too busy and I’ve met so many nervy ones!)

The dog would want for nothing, live on a small holding and would be included in every aspect of family life so although the threads lighthearted it’s important to get the right fit.

Having probably offended most of the doghouse is there anything left?

Love goldens! Not sure if they are just too busy though. Are they happy to sleep after walks? I always imagine they need so much work.
Also love Bernese but not much more portable than a newfie.

Terriers always seem argumentative to me but happy to be corrected 😂 We have multiple dogs between us family wise so they have to get along on meet ups, or at least manage to tolerate eachother. My neighbour has bedlingtons and they hate everything and everyone, are hers just bad eggs?

Eurasier are interesting. Can anyone tell me a little more about what they are like?

Show retrievers are different to working strain, would imagine that would suit.

There's a good fb page

Terriers for the win, tough and fun, robust and easy to bring around. I love them, can't believe they're out of fashion right now.
I have a KC registered one, who is a very good ratter which is great in the country.

Dandie Dinmont maybe would be rare.
Westies have fallen massively in numbers, when they were in fashion their breed quality went down.

NewtonsCradle · 13/02/2025 21:39

Shiba inu are unusual in this country, quiet and small/medium. They aren't needy but they do enjoy being petted.

I've known a couple but gosh they're hard to train! Not for the faint hearted but very rewarding dogs.

I had an Alaskan Malamute who was equally difficult but if he loved you, it was a privilege. Man.....I love all of the dogs!

FancyRedRobin · 13/02/2025 23:14

Also don't get English setter, they need neurotic amounts of exercise. Their natural environment is hunting in mountains.

Newbie8918 · 13/02/2025 23:14

P.s. my lazy spaniel (working cocker) said 'how very dare you!' 🤣

IhateMondaymornings · 13/02/2025 23:19

Wheaten terriers are lovely for showing, very affectionate, independent family friendly dogs.

Appleblum · 13/02/2025 23:23

I know you said no poodles but I came on here to recommend them! They are very biddable and friendly and love children and company. With proper training they don't suffer from separation anxiety.

Undrugged · 13/02/2025 23:05

God I couldn’t have coped with that.

3 hours of excercise a day - that’s bananas! You must have been fit as a fiddle and the dog too. Mine would probably cope with that much excercise, but she had to give up her hopes and dreams of such a life pretty quickly as none of us here have that amount of time to invest. We did do a lot of brain work until she was about 3 and calmed down though.

tollers could be a good call although they are less friendly and more aloof as a breed.

Yeah, he was quite the commitment! He would usually have his main walk in the morning (at least a couple of hours), then his sniffy walk in the afternoon for an hour or so. In the summer as it was still light he'd demand an extra. I would maybe add he was very, very spoilt as I found it completely impossible to refuse him much - there's no sight more heart-breaking than a baby golden retriever who's just been told his humans don't want to chase him anymore! And in the evening he used to hold my hand and gaze into my eyes... I was absolute putty in his paws, I always said he would be the perfect man if only he'd stop rolling in cow shit 😂I didn't realise there were working and show types when I got him, I think the working type are much more similar to collies or something than they are to show goldens. The show type is probably a much more sensible choice, unless you happen to be a gamekeeper. And he did calm down a bit once he grew up - it took him until he was about 10 though.

Tollers are beautiful, I've only met one and she was quite nervous. Know a lot of flat-coats but I think they also like their walks.

somanyspottydogs · 13/02/2025 23:38

Dalmatian?
I know they can have a reputation for being difficult to train and needing lots of exercise but in my experience they aren’t and will take as much exercise as you want to give them but are equally happy to sleep a lot! A small holding would be great for them too. They are very much people dogs and want to be with their family as much as possible. Might be too big though although bitches tend to be smaller than dogs.

Or what about an English Bull Terrier? Great dogs with huge personalities.

Renovationhell · 14/02/2025 06:20

Loving all of these suggestions! Thankyou!

I did look at schipperke but the first thing that came up was they were reserved with strangers and can be snappy so ruled them out.
Also loved the basset but it says they were rabbit hunters, probably not best with smallies.

Setters I know nothing about but they are beautiful. Will research.

Corgis I love and would be top of my list if it were for only me!! It’s the barking and nipping putting my sister off though.

Bernese mountain dog

They cost about £3.5K and live eight years…

They’re also about 40KG - giant, not small or medium

Ah it will be shown she (or me more like!) would have to spend hours cutting it into a silly haircut and I don’t have the time for that!

Plus my gran had poodles and they whined constantly and screamed every time she left the room. I’m a bit traumatised by that.

Tibetan Terrier might fit the bill.

Separation anxiety is practically a breed trait. They’re also watchdogs - so very barky

Portuguese water dog

Does this breed exist?!
3luckystars · 14/02/2025 06:38

Sorry too big.
I missed the small /medium

Then it’s hands down, a Havanese

The very best dog!

3luckystars · 14/02/2025 06:39

I have a Havanese and keep her hair short. No shedding, beautiful loveable dogs, very easy to train, can do tricks easily, no barking.

CatsWhiskerz · 14/02/2025 06:41

Look no further .... drum roll .... a Samoyed!! Amazing dogs

We have a corgi and everyone comments on how quiet he is. Very occasionally barks, but is very chilled. No nipping here either, only a little when he was a young puppy. Loves kids and other dogs.

ChowMoWan · 13/02/2025 20:25

Long waiting lists for them. I’m toying with getting one but it may take a while…

@ChowMoWan try looking abroad. might be easier to get one there and if it is very far, there are pup transporters who deliver pup to your home for you.
