Does this breed exist?!

Just for a bit of fun before all of the rescue obsessed jump on. My rescue is currently sat at my feet. We also have many years training, socialising and owning dogs between us but also know genetics trump most things!

My sister has always had Newfoundland’s. She loves everything about them except that they just aren’t very portable and don’t fit easily in caravans or holiday lets. Ideally she would shrink a newf for her next dog but as that’s not a thing she’s been wondering if there was anything else that she may like.

What she’s looking for:
KC reg breed only. No crosses. Bonus points for rare breeds. She does show.
Medium exercise requirements. No mad collies or needing hours of running to be able to sit still.
Cuddly affectionate personality. Personality is most important.
Friendly to everyone, kids and strangers included.
Something happy to go anywhere the family goes so pretty robust and not easily spooked.
Small/medium.
Don’t mind fluffy, grooming isn’t an issue. Prefer no curly coats that need to go to the groomer.
Doesn't need to be a genius but biddable.

What she doesn’t want:
Nothing that barks all the time.
No brachys, staffies or bull breeds.
No sighthounds (own chickens and rabbits!)
Nothing that can’t be left for 2mins without howling the place down (sorry poodles that’s you!)
Nothing bred to fight or guard.
No spaniels/ pointers etc (sorry spaniel lovers but they are just too busy and I’ve met so many nervy ones!)

The dog would want for nothing, live on a small holding and would be included in every aspect of family life so although the threads lighthearted it’s important to get the right fit.

Having probably offended most of the doghouse is there anything left?

Mine needs only a moderate amount of excercise. An hour a day or even slightly less is plenty although it must be off lead.

They are high maintenance and high nuisance as puppies though! Very bitey and very energetic.

GrouchyKiwi · 13/02/2025 20:07

We have a Newfie currently and though I love her so much I definitely don't want another as yes, they are not very portable. I had settled on a Standard Schnauzer, because I also want a dog that doesn't give a shite about other people (our Newf is far too friendly, drives me mad), but now I'm intrigued by the Eurasier.

I've read that CKC spaniels are very similar in temperament to Newfs.

It’s got to be a Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever - ticks every single one of your boxes! Gorgeous, playful, energetic but not neurotically so, easy to train, good with kids, perfect size and another Canadian breed too 😉

What about a cairn terrier? The one we had was a fab little fellow.

I was going to say this. The one we had fits the OP wish list very well.

She does love the temperament and the being unbothered by missing walks etc but she has a caravan and the dog takes up so much space. All of the boot etc etc.

Then again she doesn’t run about the house or get under your feet because she’s always asleep!

Ah shelties! These are some of my fave little dogs but don’t they bark all the time? She lives on a walking route which does past her front garden so can’t have a dog yapping at anyone who walks past.

Schnauzer? They come in small, medium and large

Thirded. Cairns are very underrated little dogs.

my own preference is a yorkie. Proper dog in a small package. They have a bad rep sometimes but treat them like a dog and not an accessory and they are utterly fab and so easy to train.

@Renovationhell Dandie Dinmont? they are also good for showing but they are quite rare so dont know how easy it is to get one. I did see a couple at a dog show in amsterdam though!

Long waiting lists for them. I’m toying with getting one but it may take a while…

OneAquaGoose · 13/02/2025 20:25

Tibetan Terrier might fit the bill.

Snowmanscarf · 13/02/2025 20:26

Nova Scotia duck roller retriever - basically a small lab

Sheltie Sheepdog my in-laws Shelties didn’t bark all the time

MaitlandGirl · 13/02/2025 20:27

What about a papillon or a Toller?

PiastriThePastry · 13/02/2025 20:27

Norfolk terrier.. or perhaps a cairn terrier?

ThisisnotwhatIhadplanned · 13/02/2025 20:28

@OneAquaGoose , we had a TT and he was so, so neurotic (we currently have 2 chihuahuas and they are much easier to put it in perspective 😂😂).

Eurasiers are amazing dogs, I have a friend with 4.

Apollo365 · 13/02/2025 20:28

Havanese?

Apollo365 · 13/02/2025 20:29

Hmm maybe not fitting the s/m size. More small..

AnonbecauseIamlackinginspiration · 13/02/2025 20:37

Border terriers have a lovely temperament and are not as bonkers as JRT’s etc.
I love Patterdales but they can be challenging unless she is up for a lot of training.
Also a corgi maybe?

Oh goodness! Will be very aware of this when we eventually get one and make sure we choose wisely. Something with every breed, isn’t there.

Mendeleyev · 13/02/2025 20:43

Schnauzers are barky fuckers. Minis are dreadful. Standards have massive prey drive. They are bred to kill rats and guard. They don’t really like people although are ok once introduced.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 13/02/2025 20:44

Loving the suggestions of Bouviers and Bernese as small/medium ...

My first thought was a Toller. Smooth Collie would fit too, they are not wired but will turn their paw to anything.

Mendeleyev · 13/02/2025 20:45

Although I will say schnauzers don’t smell strongly and don’t shed if stripped. And look amazing with their mad beards

I think border terrier fits the bill. Some are a bit barky, that's the only point I'm not sure on!

Perseimmion · 13/02/2025 20:47

Miniature poodle. Poodle are fabulous dogs.
