Hi ladies, me and my son are looking for a staffy pup. Do any of you wise Mumsnetters know of any reputable breeders? We are in Scotland but are willing to travel for the right pup. Thanks for your help Smile

No one should recommend breeders online - anyone who does usually doesn’t recommend anyone good. The only times I’ve seen it done on mumsnet, it was pretty clear from
the website linked that they were unethical, puppy farmers.

Use the KC website (look for breeders near you) then cross-reference with the local breed group (a quick google will find one), and go from there. Also worth checking Champ Dogs to compare breeders.

Reach out to breeders on the list and be prepared to wait - a well-bred puppy from an ethical breeder won’t fall into your lap, you need to really search for it and be prepared to wait.

Have you thought about contacting one of the breed clubs for advice? It's a fairly popular breed so there is highly likely to be a Scottish club.

Posting here you'll probably only get dozens of suggestions for rescue dogs - MN is always quite anti puppy buying.

Contact the secretary of your local kc registered breed club. They will know of health tested planned litters

Wolfiefan · 17/01/2025 13:44

Definitely contact the breed club. They can direct you and let you know what health tests pups and parents should have had. Be prepared to wait. And to travel. Good luck.

We have adopted all of our Staffys in the past, all came to us young and there are unfortunately loads in shelters where I live. Is there a reason you wouldn't consider adopting?

sleepfortheweek · 17/01/2025 19:48

Rescue centres are over run with staffies - would you consider adoption? I've seen young ones and even pups

ToBeOrNotToBee · 17/01/2025 19:52

Sheerfire should have a litter coming in the next few weeks.
He (Jason) is based in Surrey.
He breeds a more athletic type of dog rather than one that will win in the show ring and he expects that his pups will get active homes.
I know him personally and can vouch for him, his dogs and the care he puts into them.
His Instagram page will have some contact details and also previous litters. They're very nice dogs.

FFS , the breed most likely to be abused and dumped, the breed rescues are full of and YOU want a puppy?!

@ToBeOrNotToBee your friend is breeding Staffies?! Wonderful. Let's add more dogs to an already huge amount. Losers.

My acquaintance (not friend) breeds Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Not staffies, or staffs. Staffordshire Bull Terriers. There is a difference.
Yes rescues have plenty of abused, neglected or dogs that ended up in their care due to circumstances. Doesn't mean that a rescue dog is suitable for everyone, or people simply want a dog from a reputable breeder because they then know the temperament, medical history and behavioural quirks of their dogs parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.
I know what I'd rather welcome into my home.
But you keep on judging responsible people doing right by the dogs they love and cherish.

Wolfiefan · 17/01/2025 21:45

Sheerfire doesn’t seem to have a council license or register dogs with the kennel club. They also seem to have a lot of dogs. Very much doubt they would live in the house. I would also be very wary of the type of breeders who promote themselves through Instagram.

Abc1weabc1 · 18/01/2025 00:59

I have a friend with a Sheerfire. Very nice dog but very high drive (which she wanted for dog sports).
I agree with what pp have said, rescues are full but not of staffords. They are mostly badly bred crosses.
I do know of one litter that are fully health tested and kc registered but they are nowhere near Scotland and again performance bred.
Breed clubs are probably your best way forward.

AlwaysGinPlease · 18/01/2025 09:40

@ToBeOrNotToBee there's no difference that's literally the same breeds full name.

Yes but in the breed we generally call them staffords as the shortened version.

Staffies tends to be the name used by rescues for anything and everything with sbt in it, hence the reason why the general public thinks the breed are larger than the are, and I constantly get asked if mine are miniatures (this is particularly funny as my male is full up 16 inches and 16kg, which is the maximum recommended size and weight).
I know some people with full sbt call them Staffies but in the show world it's a definite no.

Christ on a bike.

You only have to look at that persons instagram page to see they're one step up, if not, a puppy farmer. No genuine owner that cares about their dogs has that many dogs. Half of them don't have health tests.

You'd need your head to get a dog from them.

Rescues call anything with a short coat and blocky head a 'staffy'.
Doesn't make it a staffordshire bull terrier.
And this is part of the problem, people associate any bull breed as being a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, from massive American Bulldog mixes to lurchers with a bit of bulldog in the breeding a generation or two back.
It means the true staffordshire bull terrier gets lumped in with genetic disasters with scum owners (xl bullies for example). People go to a rescue expecting a dog with the behaviour and temperament of a staffordshire bull terrier and what they get is completely different.

Battersea and Wood Green both have no Staffordshire Bull Terriers for adoption, the Dogs Trust have over 60. I say this loosely as this is what they label a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. I would be very surprised if any of this dogs grandparents were Staffords.

So just snobbery then

Jesus you'd have to be mental to get a rescue "staffy", they're already prone to same sex aggression and dog aggression and are strong little things for their size with strong masseters and a decent amount of drive and that's a purebred which you're unlikely to get from a rescue. Hardly any of the staffs in rescues look like purebred staffs, and it's not something to risk unless you want the chance of a dog that can't be off lead or left with sitters or walked at busy times for the next decade.

Rescuing is fine for easier breeds but if someone wants a staffy they should stay well clear of rescues, even before they're born puppies are affected by the stress of the mother while they're in the womb and this could just be a bitch with bad nerves getting repeatedly stressed by visitors coming in the home and flooding the unborn puppies with cortisol. Then there's the unknown socialisation of the puppy, then of the adult dog, and just of the adult dog's nature which you know nothing about when you're rescuing a powerful little dog that was originally bred for dog fighting.

If you want a bull breed get one from a reputable breeder as a puppy, from a breeder who is very concerned with temperament and steadiness of their dogs.

@Goldhoney38 reported.

You should be ashamed of yourself for breeding without buyers lined up and for caring so little for your puppies that you take to social media to do it.

Grim.
