Hi ladies, me and my son are looking for a staffy pup. Do any of you wise Mumsnetters know of any reputable breeders? We are in Scotland but are willing to travel for the right pup. Thanks for your help Smile

And reported again.

if you wanted to find them a good home and you were unable, a rescue centre would help (and do a better job than you posting on mumsnet).

Also, punctuation. Please!

OP, please ignore recommendations of Sheerfire. They are NOT a reputable breeder of Staffs.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier UK Club will have a list of recommended, reputable breeders. Your first port of call should be them. I'd advise you to go to some dog shows, watch them in the ring, see which type appeal to you, talk to owners and handlers, narrow down a list of breeders of the type you like.

Ensure the breeder does all the relevant health tests on both dam and sire. Puppies should be KC registered, chipped, wormed, flea treated and come with a contract that includes full endorsements and a return to breeder clause.

Be prepared to wait. Please, please don't buy a dog from anyone who advertises online. Reputable breeders do not advertise their puppies.

You're at an ideal time to get yourself to Crufts in March. Not only could you get to see the Staffs in action and speak to Staff owners, but you can visit Discover Dogs where they will be able to talk to you about reputable breeders and you can meet Staffs there, and probably be licked to death too ☺️

Don't breed or buy while Rescue pets Die! There are 1000's of beautiful animals in shelters, all breeds all ages crying out (literally) for a loving home, breeders make me sick to my stomach, they know damn well how many cats and dogs are needing a second chance but bring more into the world so they can line their pockets. AND a good rescue will be able to tell you if a dog will get on with other dogs, cats, kids. The money you pay to adopt will be used to take in more abandoned animals, it's a total non brainer.

Wolfiefan · 21/01/2025 15:39

@tarnishehalo not if you want a particular breed (which many do). Buying from a really good breeder won’t add to the dogs in rescue as they provide lifetime support and only sell to people who really want that particular dog.

Every breed has a Rescue centre tho, https://www.staffiesmilesrescues.com/ https://staffieandstrayrescue.co.uk/ just two of Many. There are NO really good breeders, they're in it for the money, period.

Get a Rescue, never mind the mainly elitist bullshit that's Crufts.

Not everyone wants/can have a rescue. Grow up.

An opinion, not a fact.

Please be respectful of other people's preferences.

And rescue centres routinely lie about a dogs history, or do not have the full picture.

Some people don’t want rescues.

And good breeders aren’t in it for the money. Wish I was in it for the money - that way the last time I’d had a litter I wouldn’t have made a £5K loss!

I don't believe I'm reading this, and I don't personally know Anyone who still get their cats or dogs from breeders, 70% of cats in shelters have to be PTS as there aren't enough homes for them, and it's quite high for dogs too, and idiots on here are recommending breeders?! I have two yorkies taken from puppy farms.

Ah, but you are not making the distinction between a breeder and a puppy farmer. Lots of us buy from breeders, some of us go on waiting lists for a puppy or kitten from a specific breeder. But sadly, too many people still buy from backyard breeders and puppy farms. There is a world of difference.

Pointynoseowner · 23/01/2025 14:01

Why on earth would someone come on here and ask for recommendations for a staffie pup ? Ffs ,get a life. If you must adopt don't shop.

Why on earth would someone come on here and start preaching about adopt don't shop? FFS get a life and accept that some people want a well bred puppy from health tested parents.

Odd. Everyone I know gets their dogs from reputable breeders. We care about our breed's standards and eliminating health issues, so why would we go elsewhere?

Wow that Sheerfire insta page is terrifying amd they have so many dogs listed on the SBT pedigree database, with awful inbreeding COI. Avoid avoid. Contact the SBT council, they were really helpful when i contacted them.
