Escape-proof harness

Ddog is a rescue cocker, an ex-breeder bitch and very nervous. She won’t walk on a collar and has escaped her harness (fortunately on a trial in the garden!).

It was a step-in harness that clips over the shoulders with a double ring for the lead for extra security. She pulled it over her head and backed out of it.

Price not a consideration, just need something reliable and secure.

My whippet is anxious and used to back out of his harness and almost died when he ran across a main road. You need one with a strap round the tummy so they can't slip out. It's been great.

Drydogs do a good escape proof harness

Dbank · 16/01/2025 14:09

Another vote for ruff ware, had similar problems with a whippet reversing out.

Very well made, but at a price...

I like the fact this can be custom made. Her undercarriage is a bit more southerly than most as she’s had so many litters. The padding also looks good (and I love being able to choose the colour and have a matchy matchy lead!).

I can’t put a price on not losing her!

Definitely the WebMaster. Had more than one Houdini dog, always get the Ruffwear ones now.

BoudiccasBangles · 16/01/2025 17:48

@TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers what made you stop buying the Indi Houdini?

I think they mean they had a Houdini dog i.e an escapee.

DrNowt · 16/01/2025 19:25

Another vote for ruffwear webmaster. I've had mine 7 years and it's going strong! My dog's not an escape risk anymore but I still use it as it's a good harness, and the handle is good for hoiking her out of canals etc

This is the one. Mine has backed out of ordinary harness. Stressful

Copenhagen dog harness works well on our Labrador. It has a adjustable neck and adjustable waist. It also has a front and a back clip.

AlphaApple · 17/01/2025 19:15

Just searched Vinted for Ruffwear harnesses, you can get them for less than a quarter of the price new.

Hi, our darling flight risk rescue escaped from his original collar (ran into a road! We thought he was dead but found him trotting home😳), the first ‘Pets at Home’ harness my husband bought (ran into the park), a ruffwear harness ( thankfully in an enclosed field we had access to).
A friend who trains sheepdogs and has lived with dogs all her life, recommended this make as the harness she used if she ever had to use one.
If your dog doesn’t fit the calculator (Spencer didn’t) call them and they advise. The harness is modular and specific to your dog.
The escapologist never got out of it!!
Nice collection of colours and reflective choices too.

Ruffwear! Lurcher escaped everything until we got the ruffwear. We have the one with pockets so he carries spare poo bags at all times and when we go on big walks, he carries his water bottle and snacks.

We've used the same Perfect Fit for over 3 years. She hasn't managed to get out of it yet and the fit is pretty much tailored to her. Washes well and dries almost instantly.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 19/01/2025 10:05

Another vote for Perfect Fit.

Thanks for all the replies. I’m going for the belt and braces - I’ve bought a second hand RuffWear and I’ll see how it goes in the garden. I’ll also talk to all the companies that do custom fit harnesses. I may well end up buying more than one to see which works best. At the moment I think I’ll keep her in the garden until we have one that seems genuinely escapeproof.

She’s very hand shy, it was a month before we could touch her, so if we lost her that would be it. She’s been with us four months now and she’s very happy just to be in the garden for now. She hates the rain and the cold so she’ll be quite okay to potter around until the weather warms up.

I’ve also bought a 50ft lead so she can have it on while she’s in the garden and I can gradually increase contact so she’s more relaxed with it. She was like a bucking bronco the first time I took up contact with the lead on the harness, then she froze and planted for about an hour (in the garden).

She’s obviously been horribly abused so we’re just going at her pace. She’s more full of joy every day and is very confident in the house now, so I feel we’re listening to what she’s telling us.

Thanks everyone for posting!

Here she is - obligatory photo! She does have her own bed but she likes sharing with the terrier.
