Escape-proof harness

Ddog is a rescue cocker, an ex-breeder bitch and very nervous. She won’t walk on a collar and has escaped her harness (fortunately on a trial in the garden!).

It was a step-in harness that clips over the shoulders with a double ring for the lead for extra security. She pulled it over her head and backed out of it.

Price not a consideration, just need something reliable and secure.

@FortunateCatsGlugDaquirisAllEveningBlindly he’s lovely! He’s an interesting mix! Do you know what he is?

Have you got any secure dog fields near you? There are loads around here but it sounds like she’d really benefit from being able to get used to the longline with plenty of time and space to relax with it.

That’s a good idea. We have a couple. I’d thought about it for when I started letting her off but it would be a great way to start getting her out.

My terrier has backed out of both the Perfect Fit harness and a Ruff wear one admittedly the Ruff Wear one only had the one strap round the tummy. The Perfect Fit does seem comfy though. I am going to look at the Houdini harness a PP recommended so thanks for the thread OP very useful! Your doggies are gorgeous.

Insane!😂
He’s a collie/(springer we think)spaniel cross.
I love him hopelessly and think he is the best.
My husband reckons he’s a good dog as dogs go.

Oh my goodness, yes that will be insane! My last precious dog was a working Springer. Mad but the best dog I’ve ever known ❤️

Thanks for all the replies. I’m going for the belt and braces - I’ve bought a second hand RuffWear and I’ll see how it goes in the garden. I’ll also talk to all the companies that do custom fit harnesses. I may well end up buying more than one to see which works best. At the moment I think I’ll keep her in the garden until we have one that seems genuinely escapeproof.

She’s very hand shy, it was a month before we could touch her, so if we lost her that would be it. She’s been with us four months now and she’s very happy just to be in the garden for now. She hates the rain and the cold so she’ll be quite okay to potter around until the weather warms up.

I’ve also bought a 50ft lead so she can have it on while she’s in the garden and I can gradually increase contact so she’s more relaxed with it. She was like a bucking bronco the first time I took up contact with the lead on the harness, then she froze and planted for about an hour (in the garden).

She’s obviously been horribly abused so we’re just going at her pace. She’s more full of joy every day and is very confident in the house now, so I feel we’re listening to what she’s telling us.

Thanks everyone for posting!

Hopefully, a hopeful story.
We adopted our nutcase in June 2023. He wouldn’t let anyone touch him, he reacted to unexpected noises, anything even vaguely odd or strange, traffic noise, his reflection, shiny things, the list was endless.
Walking him was a nightmare. To be honest, to start with I was scared to just in case he escaped and I was terrified I was going to be responsible for losing him or his death.
He has had three trainers, one ended when he peed on him, two behaviourists, one kept making us changing his food. The other was also one of the trainers and was utterly brilliant.

Now, after a year and seven months, he will sit on the settee with us, let us touch him, walk nicely on the lead and tolerate some dogs.
I have a 30m and a 10m lead for him as well as his walking one.
He is still getting better and has his bad days, but he is a whole lot less nervous and jumpy and dare I say happier, than the dog we adopted.
We moved house last October, my wanted it for the sheds, I wanted the land for my boy. Our home? Oh yeah, it’s nice.

My slinky, slippery dog has a perfect fit and hasn’t escaped dispute her liquid moves

also they are lovely people. I sent photos cos she’s a funny shape and they recommended which sized bits. Then I sent back photos of her in it and they recommended changing the size of one part, which arrived the next day with no additional cost. Can’t fault their customer service and helpfulness.

We had two dogs before my crazy boy. Both were chocolate lab/springer spaniel cross.
One was a rescue and two years old when we adopted her, the other was returned by his first owner to the owner of mum and dad. We discovered he chewed everything!
We thought we were ‘springer prepped’
For the first year my husband would mutter ‘I knew we should never have got a bloody collie’
Every time he is well behaved it is the spaniel in him.
When he is a headcase, he’s a collie, a border one probably!

Houndstuff Belt and Braces - these are brilliant. I know the person who makes them and have had several fantastic harnesses from her. She does made-to-measure stuff as well so you might be able to get one that tailored to your dog's size.
